clicking the board name brings me to my profile ;)

don't get me wrong. I'm more than happy to see something of all the work you have been doing. Waiting to get more to see ;)
Oh, feel free to point out any details like that.
I don't know where to start fixing the date thing (it's probably a setting on my server, I have no time to deal with it), but I fixed the Visitors text, thanks. Really, the Noisen codebase is hardcoded in French here and there, it's ugly and I'm sorry about that, it's just that no one ever complains about it... Maybe they think it's exotic :P

I just hope it's really polished and at least 99% percent of the work is done before it's even released as a beta.
That's why we'll go alpha first :P
Just today, I realized the Print Page feature was broken. I'm currently working on fixing it.

I only say that because I don't want Nao & Arantor to get frustrated with us asking about crap all the time.
Oh -- I'll just ignore that after a while. I'd rather ignore stuff than jump into another pointless flamewar. (Even if I kinda miss a few of last year's flamewars, ah ah... Well, not that much.)

I feel bad for Nao at times because at one point he got hammered with nonsense support questions over avea at SMF.
And I see that it hasn't changed. Same crap, even a year after -- even after all these FAQs I wrote. Even after all the changes I wrote in the code to make it support-free really. Pete had the same problem with SimpleDesk. The bigger and the better the work, the more people will look into it -- and unfortunately it also means the more idiots will. :P

I remember one fella asked how to do something and the answer was in a post directly above his. I was like WTF?
Maybe I should write a feature for Wedge where when you post something, Wedge analyzes the message, then analyzes the 2 last posts and if the answer is in there, it redirects you to a lolcatz. That would be swell.

It's good that you guys keep this under-wraps for awhile. Just plan a good support team and documention for when it's released(officially).
We'll have to rely on others for that, I'm afraid. Pete tried to document the source code files but stopped after doing the big ones (Load.php, Subs.php etc), it's really a tedious job. I personally wouldn't do that for anything. My idea is that if your feature needs documentation, then it's not intuitive enough. Also, for modders I've tried to comment my code as much as possible (considering the fact that I rarely comment my own code), so if one can't figure out what my code does, I'd rather not have them release a plugin for Wedge anyway :P

Truth is I'm just afraid to see this project fail. I know Nao and Arantor are tough and hardest to break, but I'm been somewhat involved in several SMF projects over the past 5 years and I don't think a single one made it at 100% intented.
Wedge started small. We started by cleaning up the pointless code. Then we added our own mods to the thing. At that point we were expecting SMF2 to go live soon, and to release our code immediately. When it became clear that they were going to be very late, we started adding more features. We're trying not to add big features without planning them out carefully, so these days we're mainly doing maintenance on the alpha codebase. The only thing missing from the intended alpha release is the integration of Aeva Media. I think I'm halfway through it but I haven't touched the code in weeks now. Porting mods over to Wedge won't be easy, I'm telling you. However, it's compensated by the fact that it's much cleaner, too, and more powerful.

I'm edger to see what you guys do with it, and just want to make sure you guys have room to breathe. People can be like locusts at times...
We take deep breaths from time to time. Last month I took a few days' break to play Radiant Historia.
Pete is currently busy on other things like he is from time to time, so he's not as active as I am, but he always makes up for it by adding a few big features everytime he comes back. Aranator: "I'll be back!" And he always is.

We have our private area. I'll be posting there the most, as usual. I'll leave the public spamming to Pete. :niark:

First of all I want to say this is a great idea that both of you join and start making a fork of SMF, because I know that both know what will made wedge a great forum software. So I wish you the best.
Thanks. Yeah, interestingly either of us are probably the only guys who could manage an entire fork alone. The fact that we teamed up turned this sweet impossible dream into a nightmare of ambitious reality :)

Plus, honestly I was a bit eager to show that the SMF team kicking me out for not "being able to work in a team" was just bullshit. It was just politics, and I'm still convinced of it. Pete and I make a great team, really. In the future, once Wedge is stable, we'll probably add new developers to the team, too. We already have 4-5 people under scrutiny eheh.

I really like the way you introduce the software in your FAQs and stickies. You both have good points and solid ideas (and I see arantor already spam in the top secret boards :P ).
Heresy! I'm still the top spamm poster here :niark:
Not by much, though. It's amusing that even if we don't always post in the same topics, we manage to stay within each other's view in terms of spamming!

Just with a simple registration you can see many cool stuff like the draft, javascript auto-save and personal text change (which is really cool).
FAQ. Wedge.org is based off Noisen.com's codebase, which is my own custom SMF. Much of this code isn't on par with my current quality checks, so I've rewritten a lot of it -- and Pete has, too.
Also, the thought system is private here. i.e. if you're not a Friend, you can't view convos.

My only doubt is... This is the official theme of wedge? Or this is just a nice simple theme only for the forum?
Nope, it's a horrible theme I cooked up very hastily back in August. I made a few tweaks to it but not much. It still sucks, compared to my work on Wedge's theme. Really. Well, I'm very happy with Wedge's Wine styling at the very least. I made three themes for Wedge so far, and Pete is currently working on one (based off Wine). We'll discuss stylings later. Basically, they're Wedge's equivalent of SMF2's variants. Only, much, much more powerful and way cooler.

No, it's not a stupid question, but it's already been addressed in the FAQ IIRC.
I hope we'll be able to release a first usable alpha version within the first week (or month, at worst) of SMF2's Final release. Really, right now it's perfectly usable. I could make a small package out of it and release it here. Really no big deal. Of course, it won't have an importer tool out of the box, so until we go officially beta (or even final), you won't be able to switch to Wedge, only play with it. It's already a lot ;)

The name was born here, months before the fork itself: http://yourasoft.org/forum/index.php?topic=534.msg20569#msg20569

(And no, it has nothing to do with Star Wars or its derivative Final Fantasy character.)

It just stuck with me, I knew I had to use it at some point. Perhaps the name made me want to create a fork, after all... :)

BTW, when you search Google for "wedge fork", the first result is funny. ("Is a fork a wedge?")

FAQs / [FAQ] How can I become a friend?
« on March 29th, 2011, 03:08 PM »
The Friend group is not an "elite" group, it's just a private group of people who freely discuss the project and share sensible material about it. Because we can't (and don't really want to) release everything to the public right now, we're trying to keep our numbers low. Basically, the more committed you are to discussing Wedge, the more likely you are to catch our attention. If we already know you well, chances are we forgot to invite you. Just ask for it then.
Please note that if you are to become a 'Friend', you'll have to sacrifice your firstborn to us, and promise you won't discuss anything private outside of our private boards.

Our intention is to make as much as possible (90%+) of the currently private content, an actual part of the public area once we can safely release it. Among other things, we will publish discussions about features that ended up not being implemented, in case you want to make your opinion known.

The Wedge one, "Simple Math. Really"
Ah yeah... That one!
Well it's simple math whether you should adopt it or not. Should be apparent in just a few minutes once you try it. Of course, half of the real numbers are negative but as I said, it's simple math either way.

As for us developers... Unfortunately, the math isn't that simple eheh. But it's part of the fun!

Welcome to the official Wedge forum. Please read this small introduction and guidelines for posting.

- Wedge is a fork of popular forum software SMF. Meaning we started building our software using a copy of SMF 2.0. It is legal to do it, just not legal to distribute it. The SMF team announced a year ago that once SMF 2.0 Final would be released, the license would be changed to one that would allow forks to be distributed.

- Wedge is not SMF. Even if it uses the same source originally, it has changed a lot, and it's going in a different direction. We have no official contact with the SMF team, we don't know their plans for future versions of SMF, just as they don't know our plans for Wedge. Please do not think that "it would be nice if Wedge could do this while SMF does that". We're not doing this with regards to what SMF is doing. We're just doing our thing.

- We're doing Wedge for ourselves first. After many years of frustration with the SMF software, we wanted to build something that would merge the best of SMF, with the best of our ideas for it. As long as Wedge is not officially out, it can evolve massively. We ask you not to post "feature suggestions" to the forum. We're okay with very small changes if they make sense to us, but we already have our hands full with the features we're already working on implementing. And believe us -- that's a lot of work.

- We're not trying to make everyone move to Wedge when it comes out. So, please don't try the usual "implement this, or I won't switch to Wedge" message. You will only be ignored. And even if we reply, our ready-made answer to anything like that will be "stay with SMF, then."

- You may post in the Pub area, but please make sure not to ask anything that isn't already mentioned in the FAQ section.

(This post will be updated if anything comes up that should be presented to new users immediately.)

Okay, I've created a FAQ board styled to be a blog (and ordered from oldest to newest post), and modified my sm.org signature to use the Wedge logo.

I'll also update my sig on Noisen.com. Dunno for other websites...

It's been so long, and I still haven't got inspiration to write a proper announcement... So why don't we just, I don't know... Take bits from the data available on the public board? I'm sure it can make for a proper announcement message altogether.

Or maybe simply, "Go to wedge.org if you dare" :P
