As I said... I find it odd that ccbtimewiz would register here, and post precisely in this topic, to say something obscure. If he's not planning to say hello and keep his act together, then he'd better leave now because that's obviously him I was talking about. I try my best at keeping my ideas open about people (which is why I have nothing against Chris being here as long as he acts properly like any newcomer instead of just posting weird messages), but I also expect others to do the same for us. I rest my case.

We're not competitors... We use SMF as our platform (look at the footer here), we discuss SMF and we certainly won't try to "steal" market shares. (More users = more support requests... And since we'd rather do without monetizing anything, the less users the better for me.)

Also, can we be competitors when we have nothing to offer right now except for dreams...?
What they don't like, is that we're putting our fingers where it hurts: that they have not done much in the time since we left the team.
I'm not blaming them for not working as much as we do -- after all, working on it fulltime was *my* decision and not a sacrifice many people can affort to make. But heck! They have so little to fix before they can go gold!

I'm afraid DP is quite dead and there's nothing we can do about it. May I add that we'd rather not have Dream Portal flames around here?
I only moved this topic among others to the public area because I made some mass topic moves and barely read the contents (only checked that it didn't have any private stuff in it.)
Regarding DP, it's bad mojo to us.

Last year, at the suggestion of Arantor, they chose to go BSD.
Then, when we started discussing writing portal features for Wedge, Dream Portal came into it and we decided to look into forking it for Wedge, since it's allowed, and we already had one of the DP developers onboard (and one of its project managers IIRC).
Well, turned out that the Dream Portal project lead(s) was/were adamantly against it... And when you start questioning your very own license, there's a problem with the way you're dealing with your project.
In the end, we just felt this behavior was too childish that it could hurt the quality of the work that its developers put into it. And we decided against using Dream Portal at all.

In the end we'll probably write everything by ourselves. It will take time but that's what we get for playing things fair and square. :P (It's a good thing I wrote AeMe, innit? It would be awful if I couldn't reuse it eheh.)

Anyway...
- As mentioned above, SMF is freeware, so why would they care.
- They're going BSD, so there should be no ego issues.
- We haven't launched a big campaign on their boards. They can't accuse us of being spammers.
- Every single link that has Wedge.org in it is justified -- by the 44.000 times Pete helped someone selflessly on THEIR boards, doing support for THEM.
- They can't say anything about Wedge (because it'll be legal once it's released), or the Wedge.org website (because it's perfectly in line with everything.)
- Last time they banned people for posting links for smf-friends, let's just say that didn't help their popularity at all, and they ended up restoring the accounts. Do they want to go through that AGAIN?

And on a philosophical level --- they should take responsibility for Wedge. They helped create it, they can't hide it. If they had behaved properly with Pete and I last year, we wouldn't have felt compelled to take the project in our own hands. We would be SMF team leaders at this point and taking the right decisions for the software. But because this didn't happen, this is now happening in Wedge. They could avoid this by simply going back in time, breaking the space-time continuum and creating a "what if?" alternative universe where they didn't piss everyone off by acting like jerks with people who actually cared about the software more than they did.

Because time travel is not available in our current dimension (unless I missed its invention during the time we worked on Wedge), all they can do now is take responsibility. That means, accepting that Wedge is here to stay, and not just a passing fad in Nao's and Arantor's minds. We've been in the SMF community for many years, extremely active, and we've done a great job at helping SMF's reputation and success (Pete with SimpleDesk and his incredible amount of support, me with Aeva and SMG / Aeva Media). They should know better: when we have something in mind, we won't rest until it's done. We told them back in August 2010 that we started working on a fork. We reminded them in November that we were still actively working on it. We waited for another 5 months before going public. I don't think anyone in the SMF team could possibly find a *believable* way of complaining about any of our actions. They put themselves into this situation. They can fight back by working really hard on SMF 3.0 and releasing it real soon. Any other way of fighting back would be unfair and disloyal, and would be seen as such by the community.

We're not here to kill SMF. On the contrary, we're here to prevent the SMF team from killing the actual fantastic software that they're sleeping on.

I'm sure that's not because they just came up with it! I mean, they knew about Wedge for so long, they probably devised a rule against it in the meantime! They just need to find WHERE they discussed it publicly! (Or quietly move their discussion to the public area! Or edit an old post to add this rule and hide the edit date! I'm too kind, I shouldn't be helping them.)

There's no magical solution for static pages.
Or you could use Templeet (http://templeet.org), I built Cynagames.com around it back in 2003 or 2004 (even made my own forum using it at the time). Of course I ended up replacing the forum with SMF, because in the end it's too hard to maintain static pages out of dynamic contents. You basically can't store anything personal, or you'd have to cache every single goddamn page for a few seconds -- that would kill the file system for close to no gains.
Obviously, Apache fares better at showing static pages, but it's only useful if you have a very slow server and/or many hits. Otherwise, you might as well use PHP. If you have so many hits that you'd need a server upgrade, you probably should upgrade it really.

As for improving performance in comparison with SMF, yes, Wedge is faster in some areas (apparent speed on page load, no more PHP4/MySQL3 support, optimized markup, and many other things.)
And slower in others, e.g. jQuery or object encapsulation (it's slower by a few percents).
Basically, we're making sure that it's faster where it matters, and that if it has to be slower, it's for the benefit of everyone (e.g. cleaner code. It will be especially apparent in our smcFunc replacement, new BBC system and a powerful CSS preprocessor written from scratch.)

Put the pressure on SMF! Without the switch to BSD we can't do a thing ;) (Except releasing Wedge as a mod that will basically delete all of the SMF files and replace them with Wedge files... But it's ugly and doesn't let you try both at the same time, which is our ultimate goal.)

Re: images. Dimensions are generally not useful. The only time they'll be useful, is when there are lots of icons and you need to get a proper layout as soon as the page shows up.
When it comes to icons, Wedge manages them differently (spriting or base64 encoding), so there's no point in discussing SEO for them anyway. As for big images, they'll all be managed by Aeva Media, and obviously it stores image dimensions so it's not a problem.

Re: markup, we're not using h1/h2/etc more than SMF for now. However, since I converted the templates to HTML5, the category and title headers were turned into <header> tags. I'm planning to implement <article> and <section> tags as well, but I have yet to decide whether blog comments should be in their own <article> tags or not.

Re: labels, I didn't change much here, but I did ensure that labels that have a nested input, do not specify a 'for' parameter. It's a waste of space, and nested tags are supported by all browsers except for IE6. I don't see the point in wasting bandwidth over this wicked little outdated browser.

Re: privacy, the source code will be available for everyone to see that we're not using anyone's data... As for how admins may use the data: it's not up to us to determine a privacy policy, is it...?

Re: contact us, I don't really see the point personally. When it comes to a blog, you can easily PM/e-mail the author by visiting their profile area. For an entire forum... Check out the memberlist and click the admin's name.
