I'm not sure if Wedge wants to link to the SMF forums to explain things, but sure there is.
We don't have any problems with posting links to SMF/sm.org.
They're the ones who have a problem with links...

As for 'forum competition', I don't look into it, myself. I don't think it could do me any good. Either I find features I think are silly and thus I'll brag about Wedge being smarter. Or I find features that are of interest, and either I'll implement them (and feel bad for stealing ideas), or will not (and feel bad for not doing it.)

All in all -- I have already enough items in my to-do list for the public alpha... Seriously. And I've been working all day on just a couple of them and far from finished... No rest for the wicked.

Kat's departure from the SMF team was something he discussed internally with them for a month or two I believe. He didn't discuss it here, though, so I assumed he'd given up on the idea.

Re: plugin repo -- it will be based off Aeva Media (well, the Wedge Media component, technically.) Any features I will write to make it behave more like a plugin repo will be available in Wedge as well, either as core, or as a plugin. As for SMF's plugin repo, I don't think it would take me more than a couple of days to build something that's actually better than theirs...

Re: core features page. The Save button is also something I totally missed the first times. I completely agree that it's a big usability mistake. I didn't touch it because I figured most people would be used to it by now. However, now that I see I'm not the only one -- I guess it needs to be changed. But Pete already has plans about this so I'll leave it up to him... :)
(Also, the checkbox stuff shows up on first page load when you go there. Just for a second or two...)

Okay, if you want a release schedule...

Two things to remember:

- This is MY own, personal, release schedule. I'm a big boy and I can set my own goals aside from Pete's. However, if Pete's work on Wedge is NOT finished, then it will be postponed. Same on my side, obviously.
- The dates are tentative. I'm not promising anything anyway. Just consider them as milestones that I set for myself as a goal in order to get myself back to work. I need concrete time frames to get to work. For instance, I originally worked on Wedge with the intent of releasing it on the week SMF2 came out -- but they took so long to actually do that, that we both decided to just go ahead and add more features that would originally have been in Wedge 2.0. As a result, we slipped past their own release date. Which doesn't bother me, really. As long as I have a schedule, I don't care about the release date.

So... In order of tentative release:

- Screenshots -- hopefully before the end of the month. I'm only waiting to get a relatively stable version of my new font overhaul...

- Demo site -- hopefully in July. We will release this when we consider the visual aspects are good enough and need a wider use to determine bugs to fix.

- Private alpha for our friends -- hopefully in August. September at the latest. Will depend on whether we can finish our current features on time.

- Public alpha for everyone (v0.1-0.5?) -- A week or two after that. During the alpha development, we may still add more 'big' features that were either forgotten/postponed from the early feature list (the one that's public now, see?), or simply that we came up with during the alpha.

- Public beta for everyone (v0.6-0.9?) -- Depends on the state of the alpha version. Hopefully before the end of the year. At this point we're not going to 'feature-freeze' Wedge, but we won't add any more 'big' features.

- Public gold release (v1.0) -- Depends on the state of the beta version. Hopefully before the end of the year. 2011. We don't really have a 'set' date for the gold release if only because our plan is to enable anyone running the beta to be able to update without any work on their side. So, basically, what you should be looking forward to is a beta release.

In the SMF terminology, I guess their 'betas' are our 'alphas'.
I can't conceive a beta without a prior alpha. Bêta in French means "silly". So it sounds silly to me :P

Off-topic / Re: PHP IDE for windows
« on June 24th, 2011, 10:41 AM »
I only tried PHPEdit, something like six months ago, to test the PHP trace/debugging process, and liked it a lot. But it was too 'heavy' for my use (took too long to launch, etc.) Although I guess I could try again with my new computer eheh...

Still, I'm definitely a Notepad2 guy. I also use Notepad++ from time to time, especially now that I lost my custom syntax coloring in Notepad2 (I never exported my custom stuff so now I'm lost because I can't retrieve it again... >_<)

I see us relying on the community to rate new plugins. So. Immediate release. Wordpress-like.

Well, considering it'll be in alpha for a little while before it even reaches beta, we can't really guarantee it'll be any stable at that point ;)

The only thing we can guarantee is that we're doing our best! (And have been doing so for a year now...)

I see just tweaking the menus as a band-aid, it solves one or two symptoms, but doesn't solve the core problem.
I think one does not disqualify the other.
You can still have the band aid, and keep working on the rewrite. I mean at least it's there, right..?

@RvG> Hasa Diga!

@Roz> I don't know! Icons, and their absence thereof, are an important element in usability testings. For instance, Opera released a new version of their browser where the menu icon set is changed to a monochrome set. They say it's the result of the work from their USABILITY team. The first thing I thought when seeing it was, "what the hell? Monochrome? I can't even recognize them from each other! Tell me about usability!"

Hopefully they'll come back to their earlier set. Anyway... See what I mean.

To be honest - That doesn't sound good any way you put it. It seems like you used SMF as the base of your work, and SMF did not try to stop you - but still you wish not to give back to it out of spite... Sorry.
Let's see it differently.
The *current* SMF team (and some ex-members) is what we have a problem with.

SMF, itself, was developed by many people, most of whom left the team long ago. We are continuing THEIR work. If we could have done WITHOUT the current team's code, we would have. (Heck, we would have released Wedge 1 months ago, too.) The only reason we have their code in Wedge is because we have to base it off the SMF 2.0 Final codebase, i.e. the one that is BSD'ed.

Congrats! :)
This 'ordeal' took nearly a year of my life... I signed up last July, gave up on the highway code stuff after a couple of months of hard and annoying work (to, guess what... focus 100% on Wedge!), then my GF made me sign up again back in January, which is when I started to slow down on Wedge, curiously... Finally took my highway code (code de la route) exam in April, then took my first driving lessons in May and passed the exam in June. It was quicker in the end :) (Probably because I focused a lot on it.)

Now that I'm done, I'm really gonna be able to turn my thoughts to Wedge. And recover, too. This driving exam thing awfully damaged me in the long run. I'm too old for this shit™.

@DM> We have a good bottle in the fridge waiting to be opened. :)

Yeah I can't live without my footnotes :)

Smileys are unrelated to this topic eheh.
The problem with 'more smileys' is that the popup is actually a JavaScript template that gets called when clicked. It's a PITA to style and everything. Believe me, I've been there... Pete and I decided that the best way would be to turn it into a regular popup, but I haven't even started work on it (so much to do, so little time...)

Although your suggestion of having them show up below the regular line of smileys is actually quite good (and just as easy to do.) I think I'm gonna go for this...

A few notes:
- Titles are in French because I installed the demo site in French. (This was an oversight...)
- Menu opens with a subtle animation.
- The frame around the menu has some transparency, hence some icons can be visible behind it. Some people find it too light, I like it, but it's not set in stone yet.
- I'm considering adding icons next to the links.
- The link list is not set in stone either. We may add or remove some links in the future.

Basically, the idea is to have in the menu every possible action you could have related to the author. The "Report to moderator" link falls into this definition, although it's actually related to the message itself. But it's unlikely you'd report someone on a message interface if it wasn't related to that message...

I don't know about vB, really. Anything that begins with "VB" sucks, to me :P

BTW, I updated the feature title because it's no longer linking to RSS feeds, but to Atom feeds instead ;)
