Features / Re: About Sphinx search engine
« on January 2nd, 2016, 03:37 PM »
I remember Arantor was very much a fan of Sphinx (he was a pillar of their community at some point before he joined SMF, I think..?), and he wanted to do some bridging for Wedge, but I don't think it ever amounted to anything.
I don't believe Wedge needs any particular magic to accelerate its searches, though... I've never had problems with them.
Then again, Wedge.org doesn't have 500k posts... The most I've had on one of my forums is 250k+, and searches were going fine, even with vanilla SMF...

Features / Re: Simpleportal or equivalent Portal system
« on January 2nd, 2016, 03:35 PM »Hi,
I had a look at the Wedge project long, long ago. Now I have revisited your site and all I can say is WOW.
I want to try it!!! However, I have some very specific requirements which I simply cannot go without them, being having a "portal" one of the most important.
I wanted to have some sort of HTML template thingy for homepages, but then again you could always do those yourself...

Features / Re: Simpleportal or equivalent Portal system
« on January 2nd, 2016, 03:20 PM »And if it really was "more or less easy", why hasn't anyone finished a portal plug-in before now?
Dropping support for SMF mods was the will of Arantor; since he left the project long ago, I felt no reason not to add compatibility.
However, mods will still need rewrites for Wedge: the code isn't the same everywhere, and there are a few differences in how Wedge handles mods compared to SMF. But the XML files for modifications should require very few modifications.
I'm sure I already wrote stuff about that...
Anyway, the main problem is that I stopped development not long after I added support for SMF mods (maybe I added mod support to make it easier to add features to Wedge now that I'm half-gone..?!). So I haven't advertised this feature in any way. I've just lost so much money and time with Wedge, I couldn't possibly keep it up without anyone committing to support me financially to keep working on it (which would be a dream come true, at this point.)
That's the way things are.

Off-topic / Re: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Happy new year everyone :)
Hope Wedge can rise again in 2016!
Nah, who am I kidding... There's no point in lying to myself. The software is solid and usable, and it's so future-proof that it probably won't need a lot of fixes in the coming years.
I guess Wedge is mostly for people who don't want to bother updating their forums soon, the exact opposite of one of the original points of Wedge... Lol ;)

I guess I'll have to wait until I go Win10...
Which I probably won't in the 'free' timespan, because it's so riddled with compatibility issues with games... :-/

BTW version 2.04 is now available in the same place as v2.10... It was an oversight on my part.
As Frenich said, the fact that AeMe is a paid-for plugin is also an encouragement to use Wedge instead -- it's basically SMF on steroids + AeMe 2.10 with improvements, and it's free.
Of course, you can't know whether it'll keep being updated, but then how do you know that for SMF instead... ;)

Menu is fucked up..? CSS issue. I'd have to update Wedge to account for Edge being an inferior copy of Chrome. Lol.

Other software / Re: Arantor back on SMF Team!
« on September 28th, 2015, 10:52 PM »
Why not change the license? Because I wanted to be able to remove AeMe from the sm.org without further notice, and encourage people to use Wedge instead, getting v2 for free in the process. In the end I didn't do it because Wedge never really took off.
Anyway it's all a load of bullocks from smf because no one warned me at the time they'd remove it, and no one gave me a chance to post a fixed version.
Heck, no one even told me what the security issue was about. And if I didn't want to fix it is have allowed for someone else to do it.
I'm not a bad guy and I'm not the bad guy in this story. People are still able to download v2 from my site.

Hmm. I don't use these Google services so it's no wonder I didn't get that email.
But yeah they involve shared cookies so I get the point.
Now if only browsers could go beyond DoNotTrack and actually allow for removal of cross domain cookies... I.e. cookies called from another domain name.

France is also strict, but honestly, I've never seen anything about this being mandatory. So, I mean, I doubt that's a *law* at all.
Plus, I consider this whole thing to be a fiasco. I understand the need for transparency. However, the only 'potentially harmful' cookies out there are cookies that persist between multiple websites. I believe it's up to browser implementors to do the job: they should show a non-intrusive popup for all sites that are requesting to store a cookie or even localStorage data (which is something that doesn't seem to be handled by the EU directive), and then allow for users to either: (1) do nothing, (2) dismiss the message for this session, (3) dismiss forever for this particular website, (4) dismiss forever for all websites if it's 'just' a regular cookie, (5) dismiss forever, whatever the system (cookie, localStorage) and cross-domain possibilities.
But nope, nothing. Website authors end up doing it by themselves, with disastrous results for web designers.

Bug reports / [Aeva] Re: Non-SSL on SSL Connection
« on September 17th, 2015, 12:44 AM »
Yes, I was thinking of NodeBB, and I still like their design choices, but also think there's too much JavaScript in the whole software.
As you can see in Wedge, it has infinite scrolling, but it's WAY less annoying than the usual implementations. Best of both worlds. NodeBB goes for the 'annoying' version.
I was also thinking of esoTalk, although it's PHP-based, but JS-heavy, later it became Flarum, when the esoTalk guy was joined by a FluxBB developer (need I remind you guys that I'm a big fan of FluxBB, although I've never used it anywhere? I always liked that it completely lacked ANY JavaScript, making pages very fast to load. However, that lack of JS also means it had little to no features, and ultimately I prefer features over apparent speed; Wedge is, again, the best of both worlds in this case.)
They also launched a Kickstarter, which they failed. Flarum looks an awful LOT like NodeBB (may I say it totally copied them?), but in my opinion it looks and behaves better than NodeBB.
Still, in the end, it's all the same: just like Wedge, these are 'niche' projects, and haven't been widely deployed. Most websites keep using crap like vBulletin or phpBB. Their loss... :(
Re: post previews, I'd say yes, they go through it. Wedge tries it best to go through the output buffer replacement code for everything, including HTML generated through Ajax.

Has anyone installed Windows 10 here?
I'm just curious to know if you're having trouble using Wedge with Edge... (Yes, I'm aware these are similar names, lol.)
Since the user agent string has Chrome/42 in it, I'm guessing Wedge will see it as a Chrome agent, but then what about all of the Chrome features that aren't supported in Edge..? (Such as filters, for instance. To me, Edge is basically IE 12, and it doesn't seem to have that many additions to IE 11 as the name would imply.)

Well, there WAS one... It was used for the couple of years before Wedge went public; when I decided to go public, other members said they had concerns with their discussions being seen as anti-SMF flames, and requested that I make sure not to make them public.
So, basically, after a while, everyone started posting in public boards instead of private ones. So it's not that useful... Just, amusing I guess.
