Off-topic / Re: Happy Birthday Nao!
« on March 27th, 2014, 08:44 PM »
Thanks!

Well, nothing special happened on my 39th... Got offered a sandwich, though!
Most people whom I care about forgot about it, oh well, bygones. I'll just make sure to forget them as well when their birthday comes. :niark:

I'm not much into birthday celebrations, though!

That would mean dropping Aeva entirely, wouldn't it..? :^^;:

I may no longer be the Aeva genius I used to be, but it's still my high point in my SMF career...

Archived fixes / Re: Disable user selectable language support error
« on March 27th, 2014, 08:20 PM »
I'm not sure I understand your message, or even your video.

Normally, purging the cache (not the file cache, but the main menu option) should work.

There are a few glitches when manipulating languages on the language edit page. I'm aware of them, but they only happen there, AFAIK, and they disappear after a couple of reloads at most.
The only problem that happens on all pages is that if you empty the cache, the language selector will show all installed languages (not just the allowed ones), but this gets fixed automatically on the next page load. (So, basically, just reload your page after a cache purge.)

Bug reports / Re: Confirmed issue list
« on March 27th, 2014, 08:01 PM »
I've done 5 or 6 entries here... From what I could see, most of the problems are things I can't fix in Wedge. :(

Oh my, I'll never get this list done. And it's only a subset of the full list of issues...!!

Note: the 'Importing to member.data' topic is considered done. :)

Still, it's there. You can have the same structure as in the languages repo. I guess I can commit that, with the caveat that language files won't be editable. All right..?
They seem to be editable for me. I guess Farjo can mark this as fixed, too. ;)

Just want to point out that IIRC the importer code accounts for star/rank changes, and I haven't had the problem myself when importing stuff. (?)

Well, there's always the... hmm... possibility of doing per-site embed functions, and then allow plugins to add their own custom functions.
That way, we could still get rid of the site list. ;)

Where's that..?
I don't use any of these custom fields, BTW.

Okay, then it's definitely not a Wedge bug.

Good to know for tech support. "ImageMagick problem..? Recompile, or switch to GD2!"

Features / [Poll] Board status icons: what's the point?
« on March 27th, 2014, 07:50 PM »
Regarding "New Post is indicated where none exists", I'm interested in knowing if people actually use the board index icons (or "New" label) to determine where they have unread posts.

Personally, whatever the forum, on the homepage I'll only use either the recent topics, unread posts, unread replies and recent posts links. Or, if I have to deal with a board index, I'll look for the last post's date on the right of each forum.

As such, then, I could imagine using board icon transparency to determine whether a board is 'hot'. Even if you've already read it... It could simply take the latest post's date, and if it's older than a day, decrease icon opacity by 10%, if it's older than a week, decrease by 20%, if it's older than a month, decrease by 30%, if it's older than a year, decrease by 50%. To me, that would be more interesting. Maybe it'd encourage admins to 'revive' some boards that have less user investment, I don't know.

Yes, the issue mentioned seems to be a Wedge bug, probably related to a commit I made a few years ago where I was cleaning up some 'boardseen' links, and $_SESSION work on board read states. I just don't know if this 'feature' is something that other forums do because 'it's the natural thing to do', or because it's 'what others do, so let's do it too.'

Personally, not.

Okay, my conclusions...

- I haven't played with Aeva embedding regex in YEARS, literally. Now I remember why I asked people to pay me for custom embeds. Even if it only took me minutes to include a site, some of them were a bitch to make behave. Not only that, but if you don't know shit about this all, or if like me you lost track of how to do it, then you're stuck.

- Seriously, it's always very tempting to remove all sites, and just keep the 'big' ones, with a promise that I'll ensure they always work. That way, perhaps I wouldn't have to deal with site lists, obscure fixes like 'fix-html-pattern' or whatever, and just make it work on YouTube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Google Maps, and a few others.

- Regarding Google Maps, they have two embed code types. The old one probably still works, but the new one is definitely broken. I spent 20 minutes on it, and couldn't get it to work. I'm upset.

- It looks like Aeva doesn't support https links. It only supports them if they're in embed code, I guess. Oh, my... -_-

- SoundCloud got me, I suppose. I couldn't get it to work, either the share URL or the embed HTML. Without any kind of payment, I won't look any further into it. I like SoundCloud, it's where I go for new Sexy-Synthesizer mixes (I love that guy!! SQ Live sets FTW!!), but I'm not going to waste more time on this. History tells me that 99% of people don't give a damn about embedding data directly into a post, except when it comes to YouTube, which is pretty much 'expected' as an embed. For the rest, they'll happily just post a link to the page in question.

Like this.

SEXY-SYNTHESIZER's sounds on SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds

Plus, that way you don't have to point to a particular song. :P

:edit: Well, at least the 'would-be' embed code gave me a title on the link above... ^^

Testing.

Hmm.

Fuck, Google Maps is also broken. New version has different URLs... -_-
