On wedge.org...

if (typeof side == "undefined") side = 0;

"This page contains placeholder text such as Lorem Ipsum, CHANGEME, FIXME or TODO."

Smart. Is it complaining about "undefined"? Uh...

"The SCRIPT LANGUAGE attribute is deprecated in HTML 4.01."

Too bad it's a XHTML page...

Also seems to complain that SMF is using some h2 tags without being preceeded by h1 tags...
From the little I know, Google actually likes h1 tags to be used once (most important data on the page), and so on. That doesn't add up...

I like
(if only numbers are not indicated to topics)
http:// wedge. org/pub/6551/wedge-seo/
A big no. I'm strongly against URLs with no visible ID.
- The extra query mentioned by Pete... And it's not exactly like it's not an expensive one.
- What if you rename the topic later? Do you keep the old title in the URL (bad) or generate 404s for existing links? (very bad.)
- What if you move the topic to another board? The top-level URL will change, but what about the low-level one? The topic title? It can only be done if all topic titles are stored in a single pool for the entire forum. Which means if you have 5000 blogs and someone types "Hello" as their first post, they'll get a URL like "hello1234" instead. For no reason.

Really... It's way better to always have the topic ID. Plus, you can shorten the URL by just specifying the topic ID without anything to its right.

yes with cyrillic normally that would work
UTF8 languages are supported in my pretty URLs implementation. At least it works for Japanese.

Consider: YouTube doesn't have SEO URLs and it hasn't lost out in traffic or hits ;)
And, err... This little website called Facebook or something........

I'm planning to implement <article> and <section> tags as well, but I have yet to decide whether blog comments should be in their own <article> tags or not.
Would be great in general, but IIRC you'll break IE6 compability..
Technically, it breaks in IE6/7/8.
And no, it doesn't break in Wedge, because we're using the html5shiv. Google it :) It's a very small script that makes sure the tags are stylable. (You still have to declare them in the css, but then again it's also the same for most other browsers.)

Statistically, it actually slows it down, in my experience.

You never installed it or tried it out? and still you're so negative to it?!
I'm not negative about the SOFTWARE. I'm negative about the team in charge. It's exactly the same as for SMF, you know... Love the software, hate the management!
And even then, I never talked with the management, myself. But I don't take it lightly when others are behaving aggressively with my friends. So, yeah, I'm with Pete on this. I'm with live627 who felt kinda betrayed.
Quote
I installed before I knew anything about this conflict and I liked it ;)
That's good for you. Does it warrant that you come here to discuss something that you obviously have nothing to do with...?
Quote
Because I like the portal, and I don't think it deserves all shit it has been getting lately! FYI that was why I wrote this message in the first place...
Did anyone say anything against the software itself?!

I think you lost an opportunity to stay quiet ;)

Well, I don't know who insulted you...the only thing I have seen is about a license that you guys didn't approve of....
Can you read?
- They were looking for a license model.
- Pete (Arantor) suggested BSD. They took BSD.
- Then Pete suggested we include DP into Wedge. We decided to give it a try. Out of politeness, he told them what we'd do. He then got a backlash from the DP team, saying he wasn't allowed to do it. They didn't know SHIT about what BSD was, and yet they were complaining that this happened at all.

Pete has yet to receive an apology from the DP team about this.
Quote
and anyways the former team is totally replaced....maybe it is time to reconnect and talk things over?
Currently, DP is no longer using the BSD license from what we were told. So there's no even a point in connecting with the "current team" since we won't be able to share anything... Even if we ended up using DP, we'd have to use an older BSD version.

Got it?

Well, it's a great portal! that doesn't deserve all the negativity it has been given lately ;) Witches was burned some centuries ago, it doesn't mean the people doing it was right :P
Witches weren't burnt for being stupid, on the contrary. So that doesn't apply here. :niark:

Good for you Pete ;)

Can you give Shitiz SVN read access? (Well, if you agree of course :P)

And Dragooon -- you know the drill I suspect? No sharing what you get with anyone (not even your dad). If you have any doubts, ask us in private!

Nao, I plan to stay and contribute what I can here. :)
:)
I appreciate that, thank you. I remember I was quite upset when you first came in and you quickly posted that you weren't sure whether it was the forum package for you ;)
In the meantime I rewrote so much of the template/theming system... Then you came in and said my styling system would encourage making copies of the default theme IIRC... I wasn't sure where to go to keep your interest up
Quote
I already have some experience in it, perhaps be able to point out any mishaps in Wedge too.
That's where you can help for the block system, --> Miscellany topic thankyouverymuch ;)
Quote
So my plan is more or less to keep the existing SMF themes for dl for the time being, but develop purely for Wedge. By that I mean for the free community initially - just like i did in the early days of SMF. I really miss those days. :)
We'll have a mod site (powered by Aeva Media's download system -- might be an opportunity to improve it even more!), and it will probably be open to any kinds of mods -- even paid ones. Just like the Apple app store, things like that.
Quote
Ok..as I understand then I *could* start using Wedge on Blocweb - but not show the copyright as Wedge...?
Apparently, you'll just have to edit the index.language.php files to say SMF (Wedge) instead of Wedge (SMF).
Quote
Would it be ok to let people know about the change..or do you rather I wait on that in the case I was to use it?
I believe we should discuss the details in private!

@Dragooon> Why would it piss me off?
You're an excellent coder, I had a thrilling experience with you on SMF Media Gallery, I like you, and although you're occasionally upsetting -- who am *I* to speak?

ok, I said to my self I would shut up and not get involved in this...
Err...... Hello?
Quote
but enough is enough!!! I don't know what has been going on in the past, but I can look at the present...I chose DP because for me it was the portal that attracted me the most...then a few days later it went down...I tried to log on for a few days, but no luck.... a couple of weeks later I tried again, and I found the site, a bit different than the last time, and I had to register again...that was not a big deal for me, I still enjoyed the portal so I wanted to ask more questions about it...
The "downtime" you experienced, was because the children were playing in the garden.
In the end, most of the DP team went to create their own DP fork (Envision Portal, IIRC), I don't know what has become of it -- I've never even installed DP so I wouldn't know (and couldn't care.)
Quote
I see a lot of negative things about DP around lately, what I don't see is any one with a better alternative, solutions etc...my conclusion: it's all based on hurts, offenses and so on...
And... Does this mean it's not important?
What are you saying? That we should fork DP for Wedge and make enemies out of them?
Can I remind you that THEY told us (well, they told Pete, I wasn't part of this story), that they were vehemently against Wedge re-using DP?
Quote
and since I don't know the whole history I can't say for sure who's right or wrong,
So why do you speak about this at all?
Quote
but this I can say: DP is a great portal, let the past be the past and if you want to be a part of the future join in :)
Why would we join a mod team that insulted us, and that works for the SMF platform, which we have nothing to do with?
Quote
I am sure that many of you guys are brilliant people, but don't let the past guide your future :)
Which is precisely why we're not considering DP at all...

What is it with DP?! Why does it provoke so many reactions? It's just a portal!

The official legal position on using it on a live site: it's fine if you're a "team member" since that's not redistribution, but would have to replace the version number with SMF 2.0 (Wedge) or similar.
Currently it basically says "Powered by Wedge (SMF 2.0)", is it any different...?
It's not REALLY a SMF at this point, frankly...
Quote
Actually, you wouldn't. Themes and mods have a specific exemption in the licence for this purpose (in fact, it's arguable that the exemption for mods and themes diminishes the power of the licence anyway, but that's another story) so you would be able to distribute a mod or theme, if they worked...
Hmm... Yeah, makes sense. But what makes even more sense, is that there's no point in distributing themes for Wedge until Wedge can itself be redistributed ;)

« on April 1st, 2011, 08:01 PM »
Speaking about portals, maybe we should be clear about one of Wedge's differences with SMF.

It has a sidebar. You see, like the one here on the left.
The sidebar is there to stay. It's not going away. It's going to be on every single page of the forum. It will contain contextual data. You're gonna have to live with it, hate it or love it whatever, it's here to stay. Probably there will be plugins out there to disable it, but it'll be there by default.
Also, it's awfully easy to add a sub-template (code block) to the sidebar (or anywhere else, for that matter.)

Because of these two points, even if we don't provide a portal system, anyone will be able to easily add blocks -- or simply, release a plugin that allows you to do it. We're not worried about that really.
