For example, the first time you register, and you want to change your theme, where do you go?
You know, I always have trouble finding the theme switcher, even though I'm not exactly a noob :P
I even have one entry in my to-do list -- that basically says, "build a styling switcher somewhere on every page". Before I do this, I'll have to cache styling entries because right now it scans folder to find them (which allows me to manipulate stylings easily and without fear of any caching problems.)

But as you see... It's something we're aware of.

Thank God. You're there. The same problem develops if you want to change the default setting of " Return to topics after posting by default." or "Messages to display per page:"
"Return to topics", that's a big one... I've always been annoyed by this. When you write a post, you want to make sure it's live, and it looks like what you want.
I probably mentioned it in the feature list somewhere, but Wedge checks this setting by default. :)

This problem is to a big extent fixed when you use the "sidebar menus" instead of dropdown menus whenever possible, but there might be better solutions...
Sidebar menus have UI issues just the same. I'm the one who pushed for a sidebar, but I'm not in a hurry to use it everywhere. For instance, Noisen and Wedge.org use a fully developed menu in the profile sidebar. Heck, I always get lost in it, and wish for the dropdown menu to come back...

Hmm, indeed...

I doubt there's a big dose of drama behind this. It's probably a mistake on their part.
But I wouldn't be surprised that he left. He was in a bad position -- these last few months, he was pretty much the only one working on finishing SMF2. Must have worn him out... I dunno.

Odd, so it does, how odd.
Hmm, I hardcoded the order to be chronological when I created the Feature blogs.
Technically, it seemed like the best way to do it.

I added an 'exception' to the Dev Blog, so it should work now.

Too much tease eh... any sample pic? :P
Even I don't get to see a preview, eheh ;)
But I trust that Pete will impress us once again. I always found it too bad that his skills were applied to a mod that has a relatively niche target (SimpleDesk), so it's great to see that whatever Pete developed in his time on SD can be of benefit to Wedge as well :)

Oh, BTW, Pete calls them Add-ons but I insist on "Extensions" in the French versions, and "plugins" or "mods" in my casual English posts. Don't bother, it's just that I'm not much into the word "Add-ons", but for what it's worth, it could be called "Rectums" that I wouldn't mind, as long as it's just great :P

If the noob is a pretty girl, definitely yes. :eheh:

Otherwise, well... We've all been noobs at one point. But they're not our target audience, yeah. They're the audience we're going to redirect to SMF anytime we can.

I've internally changed the minimum version to 5.2. Not much to change, actually... Our current code doesn't 'really' require 5.2+, it just could make use of that knowledge later on.

Low blow.
Oh, it didn't upset me but I didn't waste time re-explaining that which has been said many times before...

Especially since you clearly don't know the whole story. The move back to closed source is simply so that SMF doesn't start ripping off our code after the way things went down. Once our code is sufficiently far away from SMF to be useful, I suspect we'll reopen it again later.
I don't 'suspect' it, I'm sure of it. I can pledge it already: that's the final outcome of the Wedge license -- life as BSD. Whether in 6 months or 6 years, but it will end up being released as BSD. It all depends on a number of factors, but it's not as complicated as it sounds. If it happens in 6 years, it means that I've been working on it for 5 years and I just lost interest. Means I added hundreds of features, am proud of the software I built, and want it to live a new life. Of course, it also depends on Pete's involvement at that point. If he's still there, he'll have a say. But I reckon that if any of us leave Wedgeward, the remaining leader will determine whether to go BSD or not. BSD is a way to put more vitality into a project when it's stalling, so it's definitely an interesting choice. Especially 'real' BSD with no extra clauses. So, if we both leave the project at the same time, it's a given to me: we'll relicense immediately.

That's for the *farthest* point in time at which we'll go BSD.
Now, like Pete, I 'suspect' we will go BSD before we get bored of the project.

I'm personally considering the possibility of going BSD as soon as we release Wedge 1.0 Final. It will all depend on one factor: Wedge's visibility. It's as simple as that. If Wedge is well known by the time its first gold version is out, it's unlikely SMF will take our code and run unnoticed.
So, you guys know what you have to do. Do our marketing for ourselves.

One point to note about SMF, while I'm talking about them. What I don't want, and what Pete doesn't want, is to have the SMF team take Wedge and use it as a basis for SMF 3.0. We also don't want anyone else to take Wedge, rebrand it and release it commercially or on a large scale. But bits of code -- we're open to it. We don't want to hurt the SMF team[1], we just don't want anyone to get hurt in the process, and first and foremost, *us*.

So, basically, if the SMF team asks me whether they can use some of my code for SMF 2.1 or 3.0, and they clearly state what code block (or file) they want to use, and they promise to credit Wedge properly for it, then I'll consider giving them a waiver to use the code. And that's already a lot, considering the SMF team did nothing in my favor for a few years now...
 1. Well, there ARE definitely people in the SMF team on whom I could certainly find creative uses for a cucumber and tabasco pepper...

The Winrar problem seems to be gone... Or at least doesn't happen all the time.
Also, the installer problem on 'calculating...' is gone, too. Don't know why or when. As long as it's gone, I'm fine with it...

I'm not finished setting up my machine, but at least now I'm working in a situation where I don't feel too bad with the Explorer. Actually-- I absolutely love overusing PT Sans for most fonts on my system. (No kidding, I'm using it in Wedge as well...)

Here's a screenshot just for fun!

(Click for full size.)

Of note:
- no longer selecting full rows. I can safely click anywhere on the right side (Taille/size, Modifié/Modified, Type) to unselect something.
- Sort bar is no longer transparent
- the font!
- taskbar looks okay (I actually built my own background for the taskbar and used it on a Kaamelott background I like :P)
- quick launch bar is back
- Classic Shell is used for both the Explorer and the Start menu

I'll be gettting rid of the Organize bar eventually. And if I can find out how to change the line-height on folder listings, that'll be nice. Otherwise I'll just switch the font to Tahoma eventually... (like on good ol' XP.)

Oh, and setting up ClearType is quite hard... I still haven't got around to getting the exact same settings as in my XP. Too bad I can't import from it... Eheh. (Even if I could -- my HD is dead anyway.)
Still, I don't know if it's a font change in W7 or ClearType settings, but Verdana looks way better in W7 than in XP for me. And Lucida Sans Unicode Bold looks awful, while it looked great in XP.
I used to have PowerStrip running, enabling me to change the gamma for my screen, and would always lower the gamma because I found my interface to be too bright. This is no longer the case in W7, and I'd rather have a setting that's more faithful to what everyone else will be seeing, so I don't create distorted color schemes ;)

So overall it's all for the better... I guess!

Anyway, yes, humans can and do get past the animated CAPTCHA, but add this fact to the calculation: when they're passed to the solving farms where people are paid to solve them, they're paid by the number solved.
I'm sure there are 'techniques' out there to get solvers for free... Wasn't there something about porn sites requiring users to solve a captcha, but in reality the captcha was copied from another website and thus they'd use their own visitors to solve their captchas for free...?

Oh, driving is easy, I've been driving a license-free car for 10 years... My girlfriend just wanted me to be able to drive her own automatic car as well. So I'm just getting a license for automatic cars. So it's really super easy. Only problem is, I'm so tired these days, I can hardly concentrate on driving safely... So that's where the challenge will be!

Sorry that my introductory post was so short -- I had to leave early.

Features / Re: Optimize release images
« on June 21st, 2011, 09:41 PM »
We support it, we just don't care if it looks bad in it...

Unknown, PNG8 works by setting a 1-bit alpha for IE6. If the shadow/alpha effect is subtle, it'll give good results in IE6. However, if the shadow is quite large and has a wide spectrum of alpha values, no optimization process will be able to determine the best threshold value for the alpha bit. It's even worse if the icon itself has a slight transparency effect: you may end up with a half-visible icon. It happened on the big 'no new posts' icon on the board index, for instance.

Hey, I just realized Firefox 4 has that resizable textarea feature from Chrome... Cool!
