The Pub / Re: Getting ready for an alpha release...
« on August 25th, 2012, 11:59 PM »
(A small bump for Pete, still!)

Issue with using a index.mobile.css as opposed to <options><mobile>1</mobile></options> in skin.xml, is that mobile users get the extra CSS whatever their choice is. One of the features I like in Wedge, is that I keep track of both desktop and mobile use, and serve a different skin, but you can also choose to ignore that and use the desktop skin in your smartphone, or the mobile skin in your desktop browser. If you add an index.mobile.css file, it will always (always!) execute on mobile phones/tablets, and never on desktop.

Which might very well be as intended, of course! So I'm not sure it's actually a drawback, or instead another proof that Wedge is freaking flexible. 8-)

Eh, as I said, I already know the answer :P

:edit:
Main problem with the one on the right is that without the text, there's no association with the word Wedge.
The one on the left implies both 'W' and 'E', depending on the position of your head ;)

Should I make a showndown poll for these two then? :P

I already know the answer, though...!

Try it.
Well, done for a few hours but have yet to see any feedback... ;) I increased the font size but didn't test with an Arial fallback (too many things I'm working on at the same time...)
I have to say, I still prefer Arial right now. Probably something to do with the color contrast.

Did I link the article about Segoe UI, actually? http://www.datamation.com/columns/executive_tech/article.php/3601421 if you haven't seen it.
Nope, hadn't read it... It's an old article ;)
And yes, Segoe UI = Frutiger, although I would have said = Myriad Pro but it's true that Myriad itself is strongly inspired by Frutiger's works. (Well he's one of the most influential typeface designers... I guess at this point he's seen as the father of modern humanist fonts?)

It's actually linked from a piece about MS' new logo which is as you mention, Segoe UI with 4 solid boxes. Even I can do better than that.
I think I can trust you on that

I like that new logo, is pretty neat :)
Yeah it is innit?
But you know what? I already posted a preliminary version, which didn't spark any interest :P

And other versions on the page before that...

That's all I'm saying... An option, disabled by default ;)

(Removing the ban system? You mean the IP ban system, right...?)

Well, right now I'm wondering if the relative success of Wuthering in the poll could be due to my using Segoe UI in it..?
Maybe if I changed it to Arial and I set Segoe UI here, we'd see a vote reversal immediately.

My #1 issue with Segoe is that it looks too Appleish to me these days...
Oh, did you see the new Microsoft logo BTW? lol, probably the least innovative logo I've seen in years! Segoe UI + 4 solid color boxes! Woot!
Heck, and *I* am never happy with my logos! I stopped bothering you guys with my new tries, but I've still made tons, especially this week... See my favorite attempt of earlier today. (It's a bit small but I'm too tired to take time to upload a bigger version. It's not like I'm going to use it here anyway...)

:edit: Actually I had one around :P

All I know is that Safari Mobile used to crash a lot in iOS 4.1, and now I'm on 5.1, it rarely if ever does. Although I'll probably have to re-jailbreak it because I hate that Apple has that hardcoded limit on the number of tabs you can keep open... (It works perfectly well with about 25 tabs open. I just can't close any, because until I reduce the number of tabs to 8, it won't let me create new tabs so I just reuse existing tabs. Which is messy.)

So I'm happy with the stock browser.
Chrome is interesting on iOS... But not THAT interesting either.

- Range can even be country-based... (Or continent-based if you want. I already rewrote the list of all these IP ranges a couple of months ago for the IP tracker page, we could reuse that for IPv4 IPs!)
Since most spammers are from a different country than the 'expected one', it could be an okay solution. After all, do you know of many people who would move to another continent while their session is opened..? :P

- Thing is, you tend to go a bit much these days for what seems to have become your favorite Wargames quote (and yes it's also one of my cult movies :P), I'm sure you know what quote I mean, but if we keep deciding not to do something, we'll just end up doing nothing at all... SMF died out for years because people were too afraid to rework it!

I'll whip up a quote of my own then...
It's better to have coded and gotten bugs[1], than never to have coded at all.

:edit: Oh come on, that oneat least warrants a Like! :P

rev 1676
(1 file, 2kb)

* This is the annual fix list for Aeva, yay... Well, just kidding, I've only done some work on YouTube. Arguably the most important one... (media/Subs-Aeva-Sites.php)
  On today's menu:
  - Now using the iframe version of YouTube embeds (for single videos and playlists), which should at last allow smartphones to view videos.
  - Fixed support for YouTube playlists, including the new URL type.
  - Wedge will no longer attempt to load and show titles for YouTube and Vimeo -- YT started showing them in the thumbnail around the time the feature made its way into Aeva, and it was heartbreaking for me... But you've got to live with your time.

Believe me, learning to use AeMe is about a million times easier than writing the whole damn thing in the first place

The Pub / Skin showdown
« on August 24th, 2012, 06:31 PM »
(Hey Pete, I think I've found a bug in the poll system... The voter viewing options are all off by default... Shouldn't it be set to the first one by default?)

So, I was wondering... After all this time (at least six months eh?), maybe you'd like to share your opinion about the Wedge skins that are currently available?

I'll give my opinion right now -- I think they all suck. Weaving is at least a bit more 'neutral' and thus works well as the default IMHO. Warm has some good ideas in it, but it's plagued by wrong color adjustments. Wuthering simply sucks from start to finish -- I only kept it for historical reasons because it was directly derived from Curve unlike the rest, and thus is what Wedge looked like in its infancy. And Wine is okay, I like it about as much as Weaving, pretty much when I want more color in my skin I'll choose Wine, and then I'll switch back to Weaving because I tend to lose my focus otherwise.

Still, I noticed while working on Wedge yesterday that some of you guys had chosen a different default skin, maybe because you liked it better, or maybe because you just wanted some change for a bit.

Do you like change? i.e. are you the kind of person who will switch skins from time to time for fun? Are there any issues you have with any of the skins?

I'd like to start work on a 6th skin (I'm not adding Wireless to the list because it's basically a stripped down Weaving), possibly the future default skin, at the very least I'd like to try for something a bit more daring, more designer-oriented. Hmm...

I think he's not looking for that but for more than that... Something that can't be done by any software because of a technical 'issue'.

Again, you party pooper :P

- We don't give a damn about guests having their PHPSESSID stolen, of course.
- There remains the issue with members...
- Can you quote a single case where someone would change their IP all of a sudden while browsing? It would definitely disrupt more than one site...
- How 'bout accepting an IP change in the same range?
- And if we provide this as an option, disabled by default, it's a win-win situation...
