Features / Re: Saving Bytes Every Page - Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Enhance Search

Ok shoot me for not realizing the site has been updated :P
Now thats a nice lean menu, I really ALWAYS HATED the search menu button.
Love the way the seach box works, now I dont have to ask for a Search Focus Dropdown-like plugin.
Nice job guys  kinda awkward with the popup when browsing on my phone but I've never felt the need to search while using my phone anyway.

Plugins / Re: The whole "core feature" thing
« on March 11th, 2013, 05:17 PM »
Hmmmmmm
I'd argue that if its included it may as well be a feature (especially if enabled by default). Including a plugin by default for the 2nd reason you mention (example of how plugins can be made) was done in SimpleDesk and I can't say it went down as expected, it turns out that it may as well had been a feature in the end.
If it is a core feature that I dont want to use then I can disable it, fine no issues there; However it is a plugin that I dont want to use I just dont want it installed at all even if disabled.
I leave the more technical side of this discussion to those with the know how :P

« on February 26th, 2013, 06:30 PM »Yeah, there are a number of things wrong with how SMF handles board moderators, not least the notion of confusing the hell out of people! I don't believe board moderators can access the moderation centre out of the box (but of course if you mess around with extra groups it will, of course)
That does get into the very thorny issue of access, but it also makes me wonder something else. There's no reason it explicitly has to be a 'board' with 'topics', yes it'd be nice if it did, but it would create a lot of problems in its own right. As an interim solution, the 'moderation' board could simply be a way of presenting what's in the existing report area based on what boards the current viewer is a moderator of.
What I'm proposing is essentially a real board with virtual topics. It wouldn't be searchable (at present, but it could be, is complicated!), but it could be placed within the ACP wherever the admin wanted. There would need to be additional logic to prevent multiple boards, and I know Nao won't like the idea of having a physical board that consumes space in the boards table.[1]
1. It is one of the reasons why we both want rid of the recycle bin as a physical board.
There's other stuff we could do instead, like having a virtual board shoved on the end of the board index unless another real board takes its place. It's all things that are doable, it's just minimising the damage otherwise. This is the real killer advantage of making it a physical board with virtual posts, we can get the list of posts on demand and enforce visibility properly.Quote This however does raise the debate we had on SD as to whether the person reporting the post should be able to see the report.
Yup. That's also all doable and I would imagine that you could go one further and integrate group requests into the same basic idea. It's what I'd do, put it that way ;)Quote As for membergroup requests, I remember trying to get a plugin for SD as to where a ticket would be created when someone requests to join a group. A board could do as well, as it stands I think just the PM is a bit limited.

We had the board such that only moderators could see it, I cant remember if vB handles board moderators different from how SMF does. All moderators however were able to see the reports board and the posts within even for a board they mat not normally see IIRC. What I would suggest is that (if possible) some sort of tag should be what indicates what posts in the board can be seen by whom, eg. if a post from Board A is reported the report is tagged or prefixed with Board A then only those allowed to enter and moderate board A can see the reported posts from said board (if that makes any sense).
If there were a way to simulate a board in the ACP, then that should enforce having moderating permission to see the board. This however does raise the debate we had on SD as to whether the person reporting the post should be able to see the report.

I'm a bit tired so some of this may just be babble ATM

Social groups shouldn't be core, maybe an officially supported plugin.
Mod Centre - sure I agree its just not as pretty. The mod centre for me has just always felt awkward, and I noticed our moderators were more likely to discuss a report on vB vs with SMF.
Would love to see where u end up on the warnings, I'm not saying copy vB but I'll say I do love how its done ; :eheh:

I certainly do not miss my vB days at all, I'm too much of a simpleton so I completely agree that its a bit overkill. I don't think I ever made it as far as you have as it was just waaaaaaaaaaay to cumbersome for me.
I do like their warning/infraction system however. Though SMF's is sufficient something about how its done in vB does it for me.
Have you checked out the report to moderator feature yet? The other thing I miss from vb is the reports board.
The Social Groups option was also good.

Features / Re: Message icons, some proposed changes
« on February 26th, 2013, 02:43 AM »
1 - Agreed
2 - hmmm never even noticed that option :P
3 - makes sense
4 - only understood from your last explanation :P so I'm sure you'll do whats best in the end. As far as what to do if user deletes them.... what are the options, I'd say display nothing but I'm sure theres more to it than that.
5 - well my next statement would apply for me on this one but I guess it would be useful to some to be able to filter based on icon (assuming the icons are actually being used in a sensible manner)
Personally I've wanted to get rid of them completely before, I tend not to care if they are there or not. Cant think of a single time where the icon mattered to me.

Ok so I giggled a little bit on how this went down... sorry :niark:
I've manually quoted a post to send as a PM a grand total of 4 (maybe 5) times and I did think it would have been nice to just click a button.
I'm with it, wont be a heavily used featured but it would be handy.

I can say I dont really care for the deleted topics being shown on the listing but... meh i tend to roll with the majority. Could there be an option to hide deleted posts/topics from the listing or would that bring about issues?
