Link sent via PM
That was a good read, needless to say I do follow InI and have read the bits about fixing the wrong problems ;)

You've hit the nail on the head as what I'd actually desire though it hadn't occurred to me that the links could/should be checked (better than having to manually check each post). The links are generated based on items that can be sent/accepted ad daily gifts, in a bit I'll try to grab a link or 2.
I get it now.. and V/E P does exactly what I want as we do not display the list of topics just that the board exists.

This is apparently one of the most 'important' mods. The notion that hiding some content away from users until they post is a good way to get their attention and get them posting.
Yes, it generates posts. It generates stupid one line posts where people make the post solely to see the content, and invariably don't even bother replying afterwards to *actually* contribute something meaningful. You turn the problem of lack of participation into a problem of crap participation. I'm not going to condone or encourage it.
Look but no read
This is to allow guests to see into a board and see the names of topics but not let them into the topics themselves. Apparently this is a good incentive. Oh, it's an incentive alright, to discourage search engines from visiting your site - if a search engine visits, they're only going to see what guests see. And if you fudge it for search engines, apart from the fact you just gave users a reason not to sign up, search engines have been known to send out requests that don't identify themselves as search engines, and if the content is different, you can be penalised.
Can't really say much about the other 2 either... just felt like throwing my 2 bits in :P

Plugins / Re: Using permissions in plugins
« on October 23rd, 2011, 11:05 PM »
If a plugin can house it's own permissions in it's own settings/acp that would be great. I've had that noob issue where I installed a mod dealt with all the settings, thought it wasnt working only to realize it added permissions. Even the small mods I think could/should add their own permission or preferably at least a link to the permissions page from within its' acp if it's adding the permissions there; that would just make life a whole lot easier. The way SD/WD houses it's own permissions should be the model for the larger more complex plugins.
On a side but somewhat related note I even believe the general permissions should be split off from the Default board permissions.

Features / Re: New revs - Noob questions?
« on October 22nd, 2011, 08:25 AM »
Thanks for creating this topic Nao, great idea really. there has been many times discussion have taken a more technical turn and I'd much rather not interrupt the flow of the discussion with my questions[1].
Fortunately I've been able to keep up with much of what's going on by rereading things that dont grab me right away but going forward it's nice to have a place to raise a few noobish questions re development (new revs) without breaking he flow of ongoing discussions.

| 1. | heck I've even posted a question or 2 where the responses were more than I bargained for and it was much easier I read and kept up than to interject unnecessarily |

Sorry I've been a bit quiet recently though I'm usually quiet anyway. I agree with Nao an Arantor on this. Though we have 2 great developers at the help user input and/or use case scenarios are always a great help.

I use facebook to login to a forum I admin. I use SA's facebook mod for SMF which allows creating a forum username and password when registering... it is done this way so if there are any issues with facebook (which there has been in the past.. the reason this feature was requested and added) a user can still login into the forum using their user name and pass. You cannot however use your facebook info to access the ACP.

Plugins / Re: Plugin servers / getting plugins to a system

I actually typed up almost the same thing but edited it to the simple 1-liner above :P
I agree it's a more natural reaction to download the pack as you're already there than to copy the url. The phone option hadn't crossed my mind but then again I've never even attempted to get the to ACP from my phone anyway.
If that option is going to be kept it can probably be made the last option on the page then.

IIRC live's theme Grace actually went a step further by providing the options for acquiring packages right above the list of mods which I thought was interesting looking.
As far as the name of the page... maybe View/Install Plugins or Acquire Plugins or something of the sort I suppose.

Features / Re: Recycling board by default

BUMP :P
So this came to mind today in a discussion elsewhere.
The way SMF handles deleted posts is that it recalculates the replies such that If I should reference lets say reply #27 in a topic but then any reply prior to #27 is deleted the reference to reply #27 no longer makes sense.... where as in vb the replies are not recalculated when they are deleted there is just a gap in sequence for example 1,2,3,4,7,9,11,12,15...etc, so a reference to a reply number would actually indicate that replies have been deleted.
Thoughts... I know I was rambling there, blame the rum :)

Will never forget making my school lose the spelling bee when I was in the 7th grade because they couldn't spell colour and favourite properly. An apology years later didn't help much either.

I'd say admin/GM should be just fine. Intro topics or if a welcome plugin is made will take care of everyone else. Also since not all registrant are likely to be "real" members there no need to notify too many folks.
