Well the deed is done
« on March 11th, 2011, 12:28 PM »
I have just spent the last few weeks working on my new vBulletin forum, well actually my old forum that I have converted. Overall I must say I am very impressed with the software and the way stuff comes together. No more playing search and destroy when you want to uninstall a mod and then have to go and weed out all that lost code. The support is also very good that I have seen so far.

The only downer about the whole setup is they do not really have a gallery to speak of. There are two mods but nothing along the lines of what we have here. So I did some asking about this and it would seem most forum owners are more than happy to pay for this one http://www.photopost.com/why-vbgallery.html so I suppose I will also be moving across to it in the next few month.

Here is my converted forum http://triumphtalk.com The import apps really worked great and I ended up only losing one thread and one attachment   :eheh:

It's better than the one paid offering on SMF *shrug*

vBulletin isn't inherently bad software, there is a reason it became the 'go to' forum of choice. It's just not what it could be.

Well... Technically, AeMe2 is still available over there... (I can't make the switch without fixing PayPal subscriptions. And, well... I'm too busy on other things, and apparently you don't want to bother about it either :P)

The feature set is impressive (on their website). And it does say "picture gallery" which is why I'm surprised someone would be using Photopost at all... It's just that it's too 'busy'. And the database templates, from what you described. And so many poor UI and design decisions... It makes me cringe. It's nearly funny that they actually increased their price for something that was inferior to the already not so exciting v3.

But technically, I would have much of the same complaints about XenForo. Selling some software for $100 on beta release day, eh? Making their beta testers pay to work for them...? And overall -- $140 or $280, whatever -- it's too expensive for what it is. Heck, to me WordPress is the de facto blog software (..not for long :niark:), but there isn't a single de facto forum package. Wedge shall be the one -- the feature set of the paid competition, some extra features that no one has (it's really the only reason I'm getting lost in old-timer quotes...), and the best price of all.
But don't ask me to support the software though. I'll leave it to others.

Yes, I know it is. I wasn't referring to AeMe ;)

I really just haven't had time the last few days. Might dive in later tonight though.

Both vB and XenForo do this and to be fair there is a practical and valid reason why they do it: it makes it customisable without editing raw code and I think I'm right in saying there are fewer 'HELP FUCK MY FORUM IS BROKEN' type requests on their forum as a result. You can still break it, of course.

There is, it's called vBulletin - everywhere you go, it is considered the 'go to' package, even if it's not particularly special at what it does.

I'll end up doing what I do at sm.org, I suspect - breezing through the support board looking for things that are bugs/feature enhancements, and supporting the cases that aren't simple things wrong.

Well in my opinion AeMe is still one of the best gallery mods I have seen on any forum software to date. The thing with the VB owners it seems that they forked out so much cash getting the software they don't seem to mind paying for good mods and themes. Unlike the SMF members that only want free stuff and expect the best all round for the free stuff as well. I could see AeMe being a big seller if it were comparable with paid forum software. So if you ever do feel going that way I would give you full access to my VB test site do do any development you would want.

Yup, the culture's fundamentally different.

vBulletin is darn impressive so far, vBulletin 4's style manager is amazing, one can specify the colours and it'll automatically generate the associated gradients and give it a very nice look. I had one nice looking style up within 2 or 3 hours. I basically am one of the 3 technical staff(Me being a new one, other 2 being full on administrators) at http://twcenter.net/forums (Huge forum, 100k members with 8.5million posts) and am working on getting the forum up to vB 4.1.2 and it's fun. Although vB has some very strange design decisions(Internally) that can really screw up(For example they cache the entire forum list along with each membergroup's permission in them as a serialized array and unserialize it on every page, normally this isn't a problem but on that forum it became a 3.5MB Array and screwed around until we fixed it).
The way it's meant to be

vB 4 looks a lot better to the end user than vB 3 did, but behind the scenes I'm still not that impressed :P

Like I said, IPB is far superior :P

It has a better UI and backend, and under the hood is much cleaner and clearly documented :)

Oh, and did I mention the IPS apps are awesome as well?

They're also making all IPS apps able to be standalone with the release of IPB4.

Making apps standalone isn't necessarily the panacea it sounds like. I know plenty of folks who would love an all-in-one integrated solution that just lets them deploy what they want, how they want, without the fuss of extra stuff to install.
