Why wedge?
« on March 29th, 2011, 05:40 PM »
I was wondering (and reading the FAQs I couldn't find nothing, or I'm just a moron) why wedge? Where does the name come from?

Two things.

Firstly, it's a form of simple machine in its own right.

Secondly, you often use a wedge to split something down the middle...

The name was born here, months before the fork itself: http://yourasoft.org/forum/index.php?topic=534.msg20569#msg20569

(And no, it has nothing to do with Star Wars or its derivative Final Fantasy character.)

It just stuck with me, I knew I had to use it at some point. Perhaps the name made me want to create a fork, after all... :)

BTW, when you search Google for "wedge fork", the first result is funny. ("Is a fork a wedge?")

Oh my Star Wars never crossed my mind but someone really needs to come up with a way to incorporate Antilles into the code somewhere. Some sort of Easter Egg or something. It would be hilarious.   :niark:

Over my dead keyboard!

And as for Wedge from FF6/7/8/9, SMF already has the chocobo references. Although I think we removed most of them ;)

We should have removed all of them actually ;)

Personally I don't like this name, but it's OK.

We've been through a number of names, though, and this one was the first one we both liked.

vedge translated into Russian as a клин - a subject for chopping firewood
In Russian there is a saying - клин клином выбивают (equivalent translation) fight fire with fire
For me the name makes sense :hmm: - If the smf does not want to change - we change it ourselves :mdr:

@Masterd> No name is going to be universally liked anyway. The Yourasoft project went downhill after everyone got into fighting over the name. A name is important, it has to represent something and to sound cool. Now, if you don't think it sounds cool, it's because you have different tastes. It's not a problem. If you understand what it stands for, then you can live with it I suppose. Anyway, I spent 150¤ to get the wedge.org domain name (plus an additional 150¤ for other related domains), so we're not going to rename the project... Ever :P

@DrMalboro> Why would you steal it?

@Makar> And in Japanese, Wedge is 楔 (kusabi). It sounds cool, too ;)
