Title: Why wedge?
Post by: DoctorMalboro on March 29th, 2011, 05:40 PM
I was wondering (and reading the FAQs I couldn't find nothing, or I'm just a moron) why wedge? Where does the name come from?

Two things.

Firstly, it's a form of simple machine in its own right.

Secondly, you often use a wedge to split something down the middle...

I like it  :)

The name was born here, months before the fork itself: http://yourasoft.org/forum/index.php?topic=534.msg20569#msg20569

(And no, it has nothing to do with Star Wars or its derivative Final Fantasy character.)

It just stuck with me, I knew I had to use it at some point. Perhaps the name made me want to create a fork, after all... :)

BTW, when you search Google for "wedge fork", the first result is funny. ("Is a fork a wedge?")

Oh my Star Wars never crossed my mind but someone really needs to come up with a way to incorporate Antilles into the code somewhere. Some sort of Easter Egg or something. It would be hilarious.   :niark:

Over my dead keyboard!

And as for Wedge from FF6/7/8/9, SMF already has the chocobo references. Although I think we removed most of them ;)

We should have removed all of them actually ;)

Personally I don't like this name, but it's OK.

We've been through a number of names, though, and this one was the first one we both liked.

Wow, that's a hell of a history... it's a shame that I can steal it :P

vedge translated into Russian as a клин - a subject for chopping firewood
In Russian there is a saying - клин клином выбивают (equivalent translation) fight fire with fire
For me the name makes sense :hmm: - If the smf does not want to change - we change it ourselves :mdr:

@Masterd> No name is going to be universally liked anyway. The Yourasoft project went downhill after everyone got into fighting over the name. A name is important, it has to represent something and to sound cool. Now, if you don't think it sounds cool, it's because you have different tastes. It's not a problem. If you understand what it stands for, then you can live with it I suppose. Anyway, I spent 150¤ to get the wedge.org domain name (plus an additional 150¤ for other related domains), so we're not going to rename the project... Ever :P

@DrMalboro> Why would you steal it?

@Makar> And in Japanese, Wedge is 楔 (kusabi). It sounds cool, too ;)

Ya, sorry to say it struck me funny, too. I sure could do with a forum system with fewer angervations than SMF, but if I get a Wedge, do I get a wedgie?

Am I stepping out on the wedge with this?

I tried that one before and no, wedgie is only used in the States, cultural barriers!
Title: Re: Why wedge?

I've had my share of bullying when I was a kid (wiz kid -- small village -- you do the math), but never went through a wedgie myself. First time I saw one was probably on the Simpsons. Took many more years to learn of the name. So yeah, it never occurred to me... Probably because it's not even pronounced the same way at all

Or at least they don't admit they looked it up on Wikipedia. Because they're smart. See?

Why wedge? I tell ya why wedge. Cause smf is a 3 letter word, and 4 letter words are difficult to market. :p and ?fork smf? wouldnt work that well either. :)

First up, I like the name Wedge. It's strong and it makes good sense.. in more than one language.

Secondly, I want to show my complete support and excitement for what you are both doing here. Standing up for your ideas. And creating something worthwhile out of something that ended up so hostile. I for one will be whole heartedly supporting this project.

I have fought an uphill battle with SMF for near on 4 years now. A lot of the time I've been so frustrated by their decisions and their whole dynamic that I felt like giving up. The thing is I've pigeon-holed myself into SMF as it's a structure and layout I'm so familiar with. For something that started out so strong and promised so much, I feel very let down. I'm left wishing I'd opted for phpbb *shudder* back at the beginning of my site launch.

I will be watching very closely as you near your first release and will look forward to a future of eventually migrating my community to a strong, vibrant Wedge release.

Thanks

reves

I like the name Wedge.

If you are not familiar with Dick Dale, the king of surf Guitar, listen to his tune called The Wedge.

Dick Dale - The Wedge(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8e-SStDMf4#)

The Wedge was was also a Mopar motor - see image below

Two bad ass things using the name Wedge
And so the forum software name seems appropriate to me.

I suspect this is the truth. I only went with SMF because of the simple fact I was used to administrating it and SSI.php made bridging it easy for the lazy (e.g. me). I doubt there will be another serious fork on the scale of Wedge in regards to SMF unless Jeff Lewis or Unknown starts one.

We discussed it with them actually. Invited them and all. They're busy with other non smf ventures.

I came from YaBB, which was a huge PITA
I always had issues with YaBB.

I run forums for my company and had to have something reliable.

SMF was a godsend.
I have not had one single nasty glich with SMF.

But, I am looking forward to testing Wedge.
I get a very uneasy feeling thinking about the future of SMF
Title: Re: Why wedge?
Post by: Arantor on June 14th, 2011, 12:46 AM
Ultimately, so do we have that uneasy feeling. The public image is that 2.0's finally out and they can get on with 2.1 but honestly, I'm not convinced that 2.1 will be anything special, likely it'll fix some of the bugs they pushed back from 2.0.
Title: Re: Why wedge?
Post by: EL34 on June 14th, 2011, 12:55 AM
I'm still using 1.1.14
If it works, I leave it alone.

Don't really have the need to move to 2+

The next move I make will probably not be SMF.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you had not asked them. I just meant if they suddenly wanted to fork SMF, I suspect they'd be able to do so without too much trouble is all that I meant. They have enough stature to manage it without people going 'Eh, juts some moron I am not going to trust with my site'.

I think in Unknown's case, he'd just moved on. Don't know about Jeff though, and I haven't spoken to him in ages (probably longer than when I last spoke to Unknown, really)
