Wedge + SMF Mods
« on February 16th, 2011, 08:00 PM »
I wasn't sure where to put this, so I just chose the Off-Topic area. >3<;

I saw a short blurb about how most (all?) SMF mods wouldn't work with Wedge. Now, I really adore Wedge so far and all the features that are being worked on, so converting is an option for my forum (which... Is not open yet, ha). I don't mind dropping all mods except profile shouts, drafts, SA shop, annoy user and subaccounts (yeah, that's still a bit of a list... And correct me if I'm wrong, but Aeva Media will work with Wedge no problem, right?).

I'm totally and completely out of the loop (not to mention beyond help and pathetically clueless) when it comes to the internal workings of this stuff. So--how difficult would it be to make an SMF mod work for wedge?

No SMF mods will not be compatible with SMF mods since alot of codes had been removed, edited and tweaked in Wedge.

There will be a import of course.

Aeva is still being discussed weather gallery or video embedder or both will be implemented in Wedge.

Profile shouts... is that anything like the thoughts system or what's in the profiles here?

Drafts... oh that's already implemented, and better than how I originally wrote the drafts mod. I may have to improve it since I seem to recall someone suggesting quick-moderation-like checkboxes to delete multiple drafts at once, though to be fair, it's now much easier to not save a draft if you don't want to (if you get into writing a message then decide not to post it, there's a remove button that nukes it straight away without having to go into your profile)

SA Shop will need a rewrite. Whether Sleepy Arcade does it or someone else does, I have little doubt that something similar will turn up.

Annoy User is indirectly on my plans to reimplement, seeing how that ultimately I want to get away from the ban system per se (it doesn't work, ultimately, as I discussed elsewhere). I will naturally implement it more cleanly than I did originally.

Subaccounts is the only one that's 'questionable' for me. I can well imagine shop mods, but subaccounts is something I've always thought was counter-intuitive to how the forum is designed structurally. Glancing at Dime's mod, I'm fairly sure we can implement something along those lines (most likely as a plugin) but I see it being quite late on in the day, so to speak - it would require a vast number of things to happen first. (I don't, really, have any great reason to stop it being core, but I don't have any great reason to include it either, if that makes sense)

There is not a single SMF mod that is compatible right now, not even avatar packs.

We don't intend to have a converter, we intend to have an importer, that sits built into the ACP and lets you drag information in from external sources - the plan is to have it support a modular structure that would let you import things other than forums (e.g. the ability to import from specific mods, like alternative gallery mods for example)

Aeva is almost certainly going to be implemented fully into Wedge, because one of the things we've talked about doing is to have Aeva manage attachments as well as being the gallery. I personally think this would kick ass, because it means all the really good stuff like using Highslide becomes available in the forum, as well as being able to place attachments 'in the post' as you like.

Ooh, I totally missed that. Will be interesting to see how this turns out! :) I take it admins will be able to enable/disable individual options as they see fit?

Definitely. If nothing else, we either have to make Highslide optional or write our own due to it's licence.

But yeah, that's the plan.

I realise I'm getting off topic here, so feel free to split this off if you feel the need, but how modular will Wedge be, in essence? Can unused functions / modules be deleted, for instance? Say I don't need a calendar or a gallery, would I not only be able to disable the function, but delete its files as well?

Profile shouts was a custom mod I got John to do. It's absolutely lovely. <3 I suppose though since SMF mods won't work with Wedge, if we were to convert, we wouldn't be able to use it. >_<

The reason why SubAccounts is an absolute deal-breaker for me is because I run RPG forums; when each person has multiple character accounts, it gets tiring to log in and log out with each character they have to post for (we all make 500+ word posts with each character every couple of days, anywhere between 1~10 posts per character). SubAccounts is very convenient for users like us--hover, I do understand that it's not a must-have feature for most people.

But~! If there is no great reason to -not- include it in the core feature, then... Possibly? Maybe?

As for a shop mod, I don't even use the shop itself, just the Points system (the ability to assign the # of points a member gets per reply/new topic, and the ability to select in which boards points are counted). lol It's also for RP purposes. Yeah, we're really finicky, us RPers. XD

Aaron, no I don't think it'll be quite that modular, certainly not to start with, perhaps not ever. Certainly I want to make it more modular, but the tradeoff with speed is potentially quite big.

Fair enough, Arantor. Looking forward to seeing how the admin interface will be though, with all these 'modules' and their respective core features. Should be interesting. :)

There's no reason not to tweak it. I can then experiment with multiple sub templates for it since I only use the bottom layer. The top one is empty ^-^

- File removal: none. If you don't want the features, don't use them. If you don't want the files, delete them manually (like, icon sets, etc.), if there's anything else that can't be deleted and you absolutely want it out, either edit the code, or just use SMF because we don't want to deal with weird people like you :P

- Aeva Media: it'll be in Wedge, 100% certain. That's the reason I stopped developing it for SMF. Also, I already spent a lot of time converting the code to Wedge, it's not done yet, I don't think I'm even halfway through it but it'll be completed eventually. And yes the idea is to get rid of regular attachments and replace them with media items. (Possibly for avatars, too -- allowing us to have several avatar sizes.)

- Highslide: it's a definite no-no to me. I've already settled on using something else, really. Probably Colorbox. I've written the drag'n'drop code, remember? Because that's the only feature that is in Highslide and in no other Lightbox, and the only reason why I chose Highslide over the rest originally... Plus, Colorbox is lighter (not if you add jQuery to it, but obviously jQuery is ALWAYS loaded, so...)

Too many posts, too many things to say, too little time! Hope I answered your questions.

Ok, now the situation (on my forum) requires me to write a mod for smf. What do I haveto do? Wait a little and start modding wedge or start on smf and then port it to wedge? :)
