Voxatron + others...
« on November 6th, 2011, 05:33 PM »
Those of you who've read InI or one of my fairly seldom Twitter posts, will know that I follow the Humble Indie Bundles, and when this one came around (before it was a bundle), I thought it was pretty awesome.

I've always loved the notion of voxels, though fully accept that the processing power and storage requirements make it rather impractical at this time to work with. So a voxel based shooter in retro style, with some interesting quirks... sign me up.

http://www.humblebundle.com/ for those not familiar with the idea. There's a video too.

Then they added the Binding of Isaac and Blocks That Matter.

Then... today, I dug out my old joypad and coaxed it into life. Games are suddenly easier to play :D I've also found myself playing games a bit more lately, just out of a sense of frustration with some of the code I've been doing lately, so something like this means I can try out a lot of my older games again in a new way without any real effort, as it were...

Also, in a fit of pique and/or wanting to relive my mis-spent youth, I picked up Sonic Generations.

Holy **** it's fast. I mean, the original is fast but this is faster if any, and in 3D at times :o My machine can't actually cope with it at times because of the animation at such high speeds.

Here's wondering how Outcast would fare on our current gen machines...

Never seen it or heard of it but likely rather well.

Sonic Generations, btw, is essentially an HD remake/tribute so it has some of the old levels in HD with 3D bits and some new levels. But holy crap is it insane in places.

You said you like voxel, and it's the first game to actually make use of it big time...
At the time it was running at something like 5 FPS on my computer... :^^;:

I do like the idea of voxels but I've not seen many games do it well.

I imagine it'll run a bit faster now, but it depends whether it's a Windows executable or not, if it's not, likely as not you won't see the benefit if you have to use DOSBox...

Hmm, built for Win95, so it's likely been modified internally to run on newer Windows versions but yeah, that should run like ****  off a shovel on a modern PC, assuming they haven't broken the timing logic in making it work on later versions.
