Feed links

Feature: Feed links
Developer: Arantor & Nao
Target: users
Status: 90% (some links don't work. Needs further investigation.)
Comment:

Inspired by the Noisen implementation of blogs, we added these feed links in the sidebar (as well as support for topic subscription.)
You'll always see at least two links for the entire site: latest posts, and latest topics. Then, if you're inside a board, you'll get additional links for latest posts & latest topics in that board. Visit a topic page and you'll get another additional link for latest posts in that topic.

:edit: Wedge now links to Atom feeds by default. They're as widely supported as RSS 1 nowadays, and are generally better in every respect. Support for Webslices and smf custom feeds has been removed, due to lack of interest from both users and developers.

In practice, this does the same thing vBulletin does with its subscribe thread feature right? A must have, love it.

  • Reality check: I just discovered that Wedge already has a 'Mark unread' button for PMs, a feature in my to-do. Uh. It just isn't in the 'right' place...

I don't know about vB, really. Anything that begins with "VB" sucks, to me :P

BTW, I updated the feature title because it's no longer linking to RSS feeds, but to Atom feeds instead ;)

You don't like VB?

Anyway, I think when you subscribed a thread in VB, everytime someone posted, you got notified by PM. Never like the feature because it was sort of clumsy, so this could be different now.

No its much different than that, what you're talking about is SMF's Notify feature. RSS feeds are a web standard which can be read in convenience with a host of feed readers out there. Google it for moore information.
The way it's meant to be

I do know how RSS works. I was talking about the subscribe to thread feature of vBulletin, that if memory serves me right, had nothing to do with RSS feeds. Anyway, moot point and discussion.

So why mention how vB works? You brought it up here, what was the relevance?

Reading back, it was a silly, silly comparison with no point whatsoever. I apologise.

(the dislike feature would come in handy here)

Maybe it could be best not to compare apples to oranges and concentrate on what is needed?

Ok, I've come back to this now and I wonder why SMF doesn't show the link itself. This is the case with Wedge now?

There's a link in the standard footer to the per-post RSS (RSS 1 format) feed, and has been for a while.

Neither RSS2 nor Atom feeds are linked, and neither is the new-topic feed, even though that last one is probably more useful.

Wedge puts it all in the sidebar:
* all-new-posts and all-new-topics every page
* new posts/new topics for a given board inside that board (including any topic inside that board)
* new replies to a given topic inside that topic

It's also specifically only added in just before headed to the template processor, meaning that it should be at the bottom of the sidebar consistently.
