Connection error
« on April 4th, 2012, 01:49 AM »
Hi guys,
I am having some issues with the forum. It all started with the host suspending the site for too much activity that was causing a server overload. When that got ironed out, we started having trouble connecting to the database. I asked tech support to solve the issue. They told me," It looks like issue with application. Please take files and database backup and reinstall the application and check the website again." When I asked for some clarification, I got this reply, " Please install the Simple Machines Forum to the new database. Once you install the SMF you can point it to old database by editing SMF configuration file."

I can't find the config file, so I thought I could just change the database name in the forum's admin section. That did not work. I still have the same connection error. Any ideas, please?"

Well, Settings.php in the main forum folder is where the connection details are.

SMF actually distributes a tool that you can upload to reconfigure things, called repair_settings.php.

On a side note, I don't mind doing the *occasional* SMF support but we've had more and more of these lately and it really disturbs me that people feel they will get better support here than on the official SMF community. Perhaps this might be the time to institute a policy that no SMF support whatsoever will be offered going forward.

I'm fine with such a policy. I don't mind supporting our regular posters but we aren't even a SMF community in its purest sense ;)

It does actually disturb me that people can actually get better support, faster, here than on the official SMF forum, too.

I'm sure it's because they have too many posts, and individual requests may tend to get lost in the wild...

That's why they ask people to have separate support topics, because there are tools for checking whether they have been dealt with or not.

I don't see any issue with saying no to supporting SMF. Apart from "conversion" to Wedge kind-of-questions, that is.
