Finally, they've made an announcement

I'm disappointed it's taken this long to actually get some kind of announcement about SMF's future - it's been about 8 months since 2.0's gold release, and it sounds like 2.1 isn't making great strides, but it's making *something*, which is a good thing.

I'm not clear on exactly what they mean by the security tokens stuff, and by 'mod/admin sessions' (especially considering what's in SMF already) but the other stuff seems fairly run of the mill for 2.1 itself.

The announcement of 3.0 / smCore is nothing surprising, it's been talked about many times over the years but little has thus far come of it - but you never know. Going for the MVCS approach isn't a bad one (it's cleaner in most cases than MVC itself usually produces) either.

Intriguing but it feels a bit like 'we're not dead yet, honest' to me :(

'mod/admin sessions'
They meant that there now is a submenu item in the admin and moderation panel that lets you close the current admin or moderation session. It's like logging out, but for the admin panel and moderation panel only. ;)

Interesting. Depending on how much other stuff they've done as far as security tokens, or not as the case may be, it might be a few minutes' work to have implemented that, but the tokens stuff if done properly would make that a little harder.

I'm curious to know exactly what they mean by tokens, though. I remember SleePy vaguely (and it was vaguely) telling me about something he had an idea about, but I have no idea exactly what's been done.

I've just got a 'meh' to say, personally... Nothing to add until they release something. And mod sessions? What the hell? Are they so worried that SMF is insecure or what?

And what's MVCS, BTW? More pseudo-"dev talk" crap from actual business reps, like "Agile programming"?

MVCS = Model/View/Controller/Storage. Whereas in traditional MVC, the model handles all the database stuff, and is very, very chunky as a result (many many files) as well as not exactly lending itself to DB abstraction, they're splitting the model in two. The model still deals with the logic attached but pushes all the queries themselves out to another component. It's likely to make for a less monolithic structure than MVC traditionally creates.

It's more meaningful than 'Agile' tends to be.

It sounds to me as though it's formalising what 2.0 did using classes and so on. But I'll wait to see some actual progress first...

I would note, after going through some of the bugs yesterday to post here as things to be fixed, I'm disappointed. More than one of the bugs has a solution posted that is completely workable - but apparently no-one could be bothered to try it/commit it, often within a period of months :(

.....    and that would be about why I finally gave up.

(and yup, I decided that, since I'm not on the SMF team any more, I'd come over here and bug you guys a little bit, without being an intigator) :)

Welcome!

You know, we've disagreed a lot in the past (and more recent past!), and I think you can be a bit pig-headed sometimes, but I'm sure it's less than you think I can be sometimes ;) (I'm not quite feeling humble enough to apologise for the attitude I've had in the past, but I'm aware that I can be an utter arse and that some of my frustration has been vented in your direction, and not always deserved.)

of course I can be pig headed... it's one of the things that makes me a good PM. :P
but, also, of course, I can always blame the other guy for being unreasonable...
ok, well maybe not always. I am usually able to admit when I've been wrong after everything is hashed out.

We disagree on several things, but, actually, what makes our arguments so heated is that we actually AGREE on the basics. lol... it's the details that cause the strife. :P

However, I will say that I agree completely with the OP and finally got tired of trying to beat some sense into certain dev heads (and, I'll take credit - the only reason there is a 2.1 release even planned is because I beat the over the head and certain (good) devs stepped up and said, "oh yeah, that makes sense, we can work on that". Before that, their plan was, apparently, to bypass any further work on 2.x and the next release, in 2 years, would be SMC+SMF 3.0

I suggested to Pete that we put you into our Friends group, and he agreed it would be fair enough. :)

So, welcome to the band. Basically you're certainly gonna have some fun if you want to dig through the 2-year old topics that discuss you and/or SMF and our venting etc, but well, you'll probably come to agree with our remarks given the recent events in the SMF team. :^^;:
And anyway, we like talking things through if you ever have things to settle with us.

Apart from that, I think that you were perfectly right in pushing for a SMF 2.1, mostly because SMF 2.0 was far from being finished, and it needs some extra love. If you're gonna break compatibility (like SMF 3.0 and Wedge do), at least give something to the users who can't or won't do the jump.

(Well, Wedge doesn't 'break compatibility', more like it got rid of all of the crap in SMF because it felt good, but you get my point :P)

lol...  I may wade through at some point... but maybe not. Depends how much time I have to waste.... LOL!

I honestly don't hold things said "in the heat of argument" against folks, most of the time. :P
