RSS Feed-to-post
« on January 6th, 2013, 07:57 AM »
Howdy all,

I figured I throw my deman... I mean, request in.  My SMF forum is a political forum, and when discussing news articles, my users must:

1) find the article
2) create a new post
3) copy and paste a small snippet from the article to the post
4) put quotes or some deliniation around the text to show it was from the article
5) copy and past the link to the article
6) comment on the article

I know -- I'm sweating just thinking about all that work.  What I would LOVE (and SMF didn't have it) is for the admin to specify one or more RSS news feeds, and those feeds to display in a little box or something.  If a user sees an article title of interest, they click on it and pops up the article in a new browser window/tab.  If they want to, they click on a "post", or something in the box, and a new post is created with the title of the article (the user can modify it if they want).  A snippet of the beginning of the article and a link populates the post (maybe with a BLOCK/CITE tags?), and that item is removed from the feed box.

This I know this would create more traffic/discussion on my forum.

Does this make sense?

There are at least two SMF mods for posting RSS feeds, and one is planned for Wedge. Though none of the above is how they work, they just read the forums and turn them into conventional new topics.

Yeah, they're just robots that do the posting.  I'm looking for an interactive funcionality.  A lot of our discussions originate from the same sources.

(Don't slap me, but this would fit great in the sidebar)

It would, but it's also pretty much something that I can't imagine many people wanting. Nice idea though.

Yeah, I seemed to be the only one requesting it over there.

I have used the mod by SlammedDime but in the end I just didn't like the idea, they just don't look good in a post. I don't know how apps does it but they did it well: Currents, Flipboard, Pluse etc...

Create new topic and reply it, is it even possible?

-sigh- This is a request for a plugin, not an existing plugin. Sure it's possible, there are two mods for SMF that do it, there is no reason why Wedge can't do it but I don't want to see in the core for avoiding duplicate content penalties.

Thanks, I have seen one of the modes in SMF

But there is no topic reply function in it. I am just thinking on the logistic for the REPLY. Will it split the same feed item into two, one for the main topic while the other for the reply? Any idea on adding both topic and reply will work?

I'm not entirely sure you understand how RSS feeds work. Why would you have it make replies? In any case, short of dumping every item from a given feed into a single topic and only a single topic, there is simply no way to consistently make it work (and dumping every item from a given feed into a single topic sort of undermines the usefulness of it)

I guess, having one feed per topic, and new feed items being posted to the same topic, rather than one board with feed, with new items being posted to new topics... The former allows 'closing' the topic and keeping it sane, the latter allows people to comment on each individual item, which, in most situations, would be quite useless, as from what I can see, rss-to-forum boards are usually ignored by most people, at least on boards where I saw this kind of mod being used, but maybe it's just me...

The only reason you normally bother with RSS-to-posts is to boost forum posting by getting relevant news into the forum easily and conveniently, thus encouraging people to post to comment on it. If it's all going in one topic, there's no meaningful ability to comment (unless we do threaded replies)

@Arantor
I know exactly how it works and I also agree with you. I was just asking question on the OP's request, rss to feed works best when you post each feed as new topic. And What I was asking is the possibility of splitting one feed item into two, one as the first topic and the other as a reply ie only one reply per thread but again, it look ever 'robotic' so it's better to leave it at the each feed per thread level.

@Nao
That depends on the niche, I know many forums right here in Nigeria that some members will go to news website, copy the news post it and the users will give tons of replies to the posted item, isn't this what rss feed to post does automatically?There this guy I know that is doing exactly that now and he is making tons of money through adsense clicks, he is using Vbulletin for it see his website
