VPS
« on May 19th, 2012, 03:24 PM »
I'm looking into moving hosts and would like to know of any recommendations you might have. I'm currently paying 101.5$/quarter so that's about 33.6$/month and would like to stay in this price range, preferable less. I really don't have any heavy requirements, just that I need a good full fledged VPS with a cPanel license which has a reliable uptime and good support (in case, not that I need a lot of support). The reason I'm moving is because currently the VPS is giving me a lot of headaches and I could use a new host.

Well, I'd normally recommend Linode but it doesn't come with cPanel out of the box. You certainly can add cPanel to it but I find that it's about as easy to configure by hand (and you can then do things you wouldn't normally be able to do in cPanel)

Linode also has a range of plans, but I'm not sure what sort of specs you're looking for, but note that cPanel is licensed per server and weighs in at $450 or so a year for that server - so any host offering it is likely to be reasonably expensive.

Actually cPanel itself isn't necessary, I just need a decent box, I can manage it by SSH if required plus there are quite a few GUIs that are free/cheap that can be used. I need about 512+MB of RAM and 10+GB of storage. Bandwidth isn't my concern since I used like 5GB last month. Currently cPanel costs me 120$/year, so it's quite a bit.

Linode has 3 plans that suit you then. It doesn't do 'burstable' RAM, it's all guaranteed resources.

512 Plan: 512MB RAM, 20GB storage, 200GB bandwidth/month, $19.95/month
768 Plan: 768MB RAM, 30GB storage, 300GB bandwidth/month, $29.95/month
1024 Plan: 1024MB RAM, 40GB storage, 400GB bandwidth/month, $39.95/month

I have the 1024 plan, but fun fact: 6 years ago when I took the plan out, it was a 160MB VPS for the same price - and all the upgrades to my plan have simply been by them, for free, over the time since then. Support is also fantastic, I've only had to contact them once, but that was after I screwed up my VPS to the point where it wouldn't boot, and they fixed it for me very quickly.

You get SSH out of the box but it wouldn't be hard to drop in your own GUI to manage (Webmin, for example)

Currently I got 768MB RAM, 25GB storage and 500GB bandwidth which is an overkill. 80% of the disk space I use is for the backups of the server itself :P, 768MB RAM is hardly used. It was useful when I had JIRA running but that was unnecessary. I'll check out Linode, do they have a backup service?

They do, but it's on top of the normal price of the VPS; 512 plan is an extra $5/month, 768 plan is extra $7.50 and 1024 is extra $10 per month. http://www.linode.com/backups/ has their backup setup, you might find it's better to roll your own setup rather than paying for theirs, but it's up to you.

5$/mo isn't a biggy, although I'll roll my own setup for the fun of it.

Out of curiosity, what setup are you using (OS/GUI)? I'll most likely go with Linode since they got the best plans I've found so far, unless someone suggests me something better in the next 6 hours.

Oh and you got any referral code?

If you can deal with using a French datacenter (i.e. likely to be very slow for you), and I'm not sure they all accept overseas customers, but I know these are reputable service providers:

http://www.ovh.com/fr/vps/ (about 20€/mo. for 512MB Ram, decent bandwidth...)
http://www.kimsufi.com/ (from the same guys -- dedicated 2GB Ram servers at 15€/mo.)
http://www.kimsufi.com/fr/vks/index.xml (VPS on kimsufi -- 2GB Ram at 15€/mo. just the same...)
http://www.online.net/serveur-dedie/comparatif-serveur-dedie-start-hp.xhtml (Dedibox, mostly at 15€ and 30€, are a geek favourite from the French ISP Free aka Iliad aka Online.)

I'm using Ubuntu server, no GUI (doing it all via WinSCP and PuTTY), but you get a choice of distros to play with.

Referral code is c06bda2f5288f410e1afc05cdfd4046616eae8fc thanks :)

I should also note that Linode does have multiple DCs across the world to work with, so I have my main Linode in Dallas and I have a secondary one for specific purposes in London.

Gonna go with Linode simply because I'm liking their community support. Plus they're in English so I'll have less trouble with communicating I guess[1].

For mail server, I use postfix for outbound (inbound is routed separately through FastMail) and that has the benefit of being set up like sendmail for sending (so SMF/Wedge just use PHP defaults)

I've been setting up my server (with the help of their community support) and it's been actually working. This is my expression:

I chose an italian company called Tophost. They're launching a new offer called Topserver (actually in public beta, but still doesn't appear on their site).

Currently I have 512 MB RAM, 20 Gbyte hard drive, 100 Mb/s bandwidth and a stock Ubuntu Server. It's native IPv6 and I have a unique IP. I pay ~6,50€ per month.

You can also have 1Gb or 2Gb of RAM and other Linux distributions.. you can have "snapshots" of you VPS (not included). No cPanel.
