Copyright Infringment
« on September 13th, 2011, 10:57 PM »
I'm trying to convince this stupid kid over at Google+ that it's not right to quote without giving source.

I'm a quote freak, so I always give where credit is due. I'm pretty sure I've done the same over at iApple Cafe as resources.

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum44/1010.htm

Replace "website" with "Google+/Facebook/Twitter" so the stupid kid can understand.

1. Can I copy the whole article and just paste it to my Google+/Facebook/Twitter?
NO. not without permission from the author.

2. Can I copy the whole article and just paste it to my Google+/Facebook/Twitter, as long as i mention where i got it from?
NO. not without permission from the author.

3. Can I only copy quotes from the article, and just paste it to my Google+/Facebook/Twitter?
Yes, you may use a small extract, but you MUST quote the source. For more information see: http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html

4. Can I only copy quotes from the article, and paste it to my Google+/Facebook/Twitter, when i mention where i got the article from?
it depends, see 3.

5. Is it allowed to quote the whole news and add 1 line of Your own?
NO. Not without permission from the author.

Yeah, people don't seem to realise that G+/FB/Twitter isn't some kind of dumping ground where you can say what you like.

Instead of saying:
Quote
If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep.
It sounds like you actually wrote this.

It should be:
Quote
"If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep." ~Dale Carnegie
No?

That's exactly it. Individual quotes are generally not going to be noticed, but it's good to attribute if/when possible.

Note: Fair use is not legislation for 96% of the world, even though similar laws are in place in a lot of places.

I fought for many years for this kind of thing. Until I understood that kids don't get it until they actually get someone else to steal their writings.

I had my fair of share doing that, before I realized everyone is doing it to the point I stopped doing it because it's not right.

The more I get serious about copyright, the more I get pissed off seeing people doing it. :(

Tried it against this kid few days ago using that method. :P
Doesn't flinch him, not...ever...one...bit.

The method was a failure. :p

Was it something he cared about? Something he'd put real time into working on?

Then it was doomed. It has to be something the person actually cares about before it hits home.

And that's not even one of mine. That's from Doctor Who, season 5, "The Beast Below". It just seemed apt at the time...

And in the UK it'd be classed as fair use ;)

First thing to do when you wanna quote something: you google the sentence and you try to find out whether everyone agrees on the source...
