Auto-embedding
« on May 6th, 2011, 07:31 PM »
Feature: Auto-embedding
Developer: Nao
Target: users
Status: 99% (completed. By its nature, the site list will need updates to keep up with the web's evolution.)
Comment:

Based on Aeva Lite, this is the only auto-embedding tool you'll ever need. (Feel free to disagree, but then again you're free to be stupid :niark:)
There's not much to be said... It's just there, it's enabled by default, it works great with 200+ sites, but most people will know it as "the thing that magically embeds my YouTube videos and Google Maps when I post their URLs." Oh, and yes, it also supports the recent youtu.be URLs.

Could their possibly be an option to add custom sites to embed from?

Considering there already is in Aeva...

Well, here's the thing, while you could build an interface, the content for it is very complicated with regular expressions, and if you can cope with regexps, you can add code...

Everybody clap your hands! (Ugh, stupid song)

So everybody wants a one-click solution to their problems and they want it now, faster, faster, faster! All good things take time but they also take work.

Please consider adding sports (Soccer) websites like Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona. My country is a soccer mad country and members are always looking beyond youtube for interviews, match highlights etc.

My country is a soccer mad country, too... We actually even won the world cup some time ago, still don't know how we did that...

Doesn't change the fact that I have no interest for football, and no intention of ever going to a sports-related website... :P
Aeva-related requests should be made after Wedge is out. Maybe I'll cook up some kind of plugin to easily allow adding new sites; right now, I think it's quite 'monolithic', as I probably removed most of the auto-update code. (Aeva for SMF also went through the same, as I decided long ago to stop updating it except for potential security fixes...)

I've thought about making new definitions pluggable for some time.

Thanks for your insights, once again I am selfish for making such demand. Youtube is best for now and should be okay for everyone. Others can patiently wait. Anything that is a better version of smf is something else. I have used smf for sometime now and can testify what it can really do. Keep on the good work and let us know when you are thirsty, may a 'bottle of bear' can do great.

Hi.
I'm not sure exactly where to post this but here goes:

What I'd like to suggest is, when somebody attaches a photo to a post, that it automatically adds to a gallery album (maybe one selected in admin as 'attached' to the board).

Maybe this has already been thought of?

This implies dropping the attachment system entirely, in favor of AeMe items.
This was part of my original plans for Wedge, but as TE wrote the importer, and didn't want to deal with AeMe at all, I postponed it to later... And it probably will not happen in Wedge 1.0, if ever. I'm upset about that, but I'm trying to be realistic.

Actually, I mentioned that in the blog post I wrote today...

Thanks for your reply.
I have a small SMF forum with Aeva, and I just stumbled on Wedge today after planning a new forum, so it was really exciting to hear of the possibility of something hugely better. Your work on this is much appreciated.
When I start my new forum there will be a lot of members coming from Facebook so a built in gallery and Like system are my top priorities. The features of Facebook has dictated what people expect these days... unfortunately.

Yes it's true. Sadly.
But I think we can make it better. Wedge has some great advantages over Facebook.
There are more features to come (e.g. streaming profiles). So stay tuned.
@Nao:
What do you think about not to drop the entire attachment system, but give the user a possibility (dropdown box) to upload this attachment as Item in AeMe while posting?

I don't know what a streaming profile is... :P

Frankly, I'd love to integrate AeMe more into Wedge, and to be honest, I don't have to do it: I could simply remove AeMe from the mod site at SMF, and then ensure that I have absolute exclusivity of AeMe code in the SMF world. I'm not interested in doing that, though, because as a user I would be pissed.

I haven't heard about AeMe bugs, though. If I did, I would fix them. In Wedge at the very least, and possibly in AeMe for SMF if they were security-related (or really bad for my reputation, lol.)
