Hosting
« on May 12th, 2014, 01:08 AM »
I just installed a fresh copy of Wedge on a sub-folder of wedge.org and then a sub-folder of cynagames.com (which is hosted at my old host), and... Well, I'm not getting the same speeds. The OVH (cynagames) version is much more responsive. It gives me the same parsing times (less than 0.1s per page), but I actually get pages fast.

So, quite obviously -- my current hosting isn't as good as I was hoping it would be. Well, honestly I wasn't really hoping -- because if it was half as good as I wanted, it would mean that *Wedge* itself is slower than SMF. Which isn't the case.
Unfortunately, I also realized that Wedge is slower than SMF 1.x, but there's a good reason for that -- SMF 2.0, while it added many nice features, is also very bloated: the size of all CSS and JavaScript files was multiplied by 4 or 5, or something like that. All I've been doing in Wedge was to try and make it faster and shorter. Because it relies on jQuery, it's never going to be able to catch up, but at some point I'll just have to be satisfied that it's (nearly) as fast as feature-light SMF 1.1 installs.

Anyway-- I was wondering if any of you guys were willing to share your web hosting space (preferably something very solid, with daily backups and so on!), because I don't know if there's any point in advertising Wedge when all people can see is that it's very slow for them -- before they actually even try to install it.

Thanks guys.
John, your forum seems to be slower for me than wedge.org... Slower page generation times, and slower perceived load times. Same for you..?
Lorenzo, I can't find a SMF forum around your website, do you have any demos around? Are you satisfied with the overall speed?

I'm fine with a server outside of France, BTW (otherwise I wouldn't have posted this topic), I just need something that's reactive.

I can set you up on Hostgator, my friend has a reseller there and i also have a reseller at semoweb.com hosting. So anywhere  you want. Though i think hostgator is faster.

The SMF forum, http://jucktion.com/forum is on hostgator. You can check the speed there i have enabled " Display time taken to create every page " there.

I'm getting 0.2s page load times at best, which is 20 times more than on more capable hosting... ;)
Although Wedge is definitely faster than SMF, it's still on the same order of magnitude, so...

I made some tests with Pandos's personal server, they were good, but there were some technical issues that killed a bit of the momentum (like his using Cherokee which isn't exactly what Wedge was built for, as well as some session problems), so for now I'm staying here, but I'll definitely keep that server in mind, in case this one really, really gets too annoying. (Plus, I need to think of a really fast server on which to host wedge.org, because most people tend to judge a book by its cover, and in Wedge's case, the cover is the official website.)

ok no problems. It may be because i have a ton of plugins and such. i get it between .1s to .150s so it might be some location thing too. i'll try a fresh wedge installation, and see how it goes.

Generation times indicated at the bottom of the page are only related to server performance, not network performance.
You can have a page generated in 0.02s and still need 10 seconds to load it, just as you could have a page generated in 0.5s and need 2 seconds to load it. Network performance is critical in getting people to stay on your website.
