Off-topic / Re: Surviving Your Competitor
« on May 4th, 2013, 04:47 PM »
Thanks @xrunner
I have an intention of making the forum a digital(virtual) nation, a role playing forum a sort of. A virtual country must have every aspect of real life just like a real country, the only difference here is that my forum will be a virtual one **hope am not confusing anybody**. My intention of creating the community is not to compete but to succeed with it but the fact still remains, our competitors remains a big problem to road to our success (especially if they are far better than us). I started from sports, traffic but no participation, I added technology and there is a bit improvement, maybe I have to forget how successful my 'enemy' is and mind my own business.

Yes I agree, but how do you deal with it if it seems you are heading to failure?

^^Lucky you, your Competitor is stupid enough to allow the crashing of his forum. Mine is not as he is running on dedicated server which he is managing himself.
I created a general purpose forum that will be flexible to be offering all topics. I started from sports angle it was getting some traffic from Google but that is it. My competitor offers it as well and it is very lively down there.
I added technology, there is am immediate impact, few members but fewer post. Some manages to ask questions but will not return to see the answer. Some just appreciate your efforts but thats it. Back in my competitor's house, he is banning as many members as possible, insulting and telling them he doesn't need them and yet they are there asking for forgiveness. Are they blind? Can't they see there is a 'better' option?

This is very annoying or better put frustrating. Having a competitor who have been there for about 10 years. Membership running to over 1 million, post running to over 12 million. You are new, very few inactive members. Most posts are made by you. In such case, how do you survive? Suggestions are needed.
Thanks.

@Arantor

I never intended to be unhelpful (if I am) and I never think I said something wrong, maybe miscommunication.

1. Calling somebody perfections (especially if they are is not bad).
2. Saying that Wedge will not be released in hurry is not unhelpful (at least to my own view). @Noa made it clear he have no intention on releasing something in a hurry which failed to meet up to  his standard.
All said no cause to stir up confusion or whatever. I currently have a community running on MYBB which I am currently intending on moving on to Wedge platform once it is ready. Maybe it's time to follow Maxx style in asking users to 'investigate' our new platform-to-be.

public_html folder is something related to shared hostings. You have to install php(5-fpm) (if you're using php pages), apache / nginx as web servers. Then you configure virtual hosts and choose the folder.
I am trying to edit /etc/apache2/sites-available/mysite
Code: [Select]
DocumentRoot /var/www
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
<Directory /var/www/>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
allow from all
</Directory>

I want to change document root to /home/user/public_html/, this will enable the users I created have access to document root an access Apache web server but It cannot save, the mysite content keep on telling me that I have no permission to perform the task,if I use $ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/mysite after editing the file, it will save as mysite1.save, mysite2.save,mysite3.save which also I cannot delete.

@Arantor

I am able to create my instance, I am using Ubuntu 12.0 as my OS. I just notice it doesn't have apache installed, no Mysql or Php. Guess I have to install them before I can have access to public_html folder.

Saw their client vps hosting, never knew it was bad. Thanks for warning me. Heck! The vps hosting is so cheap :)

They integrates with Filezilla server - http://www.zpanelcp.com/about/features/

Thanks #neverknew
And yes, wireless is the best, using it as my default theme on both desktop and mobile browser.

Opposite

I actually bring two of them to light so somebody can compare and see the difference, to my understanding, web 2.0 looks is the web with modern look with neatly written html, working rss, color match - no color riot etc, etc. I was testing the rss in phpbb and found out after wasting a lot of time that phpbb  can only give rss to each topic and not to thread, this means that every post made have its on rss link and no rss link for topics/threads only.
Another good feature of web 2.0 is the ajax based functionality.

What does Web 2.0 look like anyway?
Am not a teacher but simple example is this

Open default Phpbb theme
Open Wireless the of Wedge
Log in to both of them
Try to use them, each for about five minutes

Give the result.
.......................................................................................

Drive two heavy trucks
One power steering, the other air steering
Drive both in a bended and busy road for about 1 mile
Give result.

@Kindred

Something more 'complex' or funny will for sure draw attentions (in computer world). Why is Google giving versions Android food names. Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich... one day they will run out of food names and may start with things that are more wired. There is a myth that computer programs with complex names are always complex. Something like Beta 3 Alpha 0.0012 RC 1.8 will 'scare' second world webmasters out of their skins :)

@Nao

Good work but I don't listen to anyone that complained that my forum is not great in IE6 or even IE7. My standard reply 'is this 2013 not 1999'. Upgrade your browser.

@Arantor

Just I found out about Wegde at  anotheradminforum.com

Thanks.

@ziycon
I know Cpanel will not work on Amazon EC2 and I am not looking towards Plesk who is charging $39.99/M (more like a joke!). I was actually asking of free cpanel like zpanelcp.com, they have custom SSH which I don't know if it will work on Amazon EC2.
One likeable thing about them is that they are using Filzilla server.

Never knew about the theming system but all I know is that wireless is by far the best theme here at Wedge. Originally create as a default theme for mobile phones but it is running smoothly on PC and the speed is amazing. Another thing that works commenting on is the Web 2.0 look.
