Wedge is expressly UTF-8 only, because it solves so many problems around internationalisation. AFAIK the importer will already deal with conversion to UTF-8 for you (and if it doesn't yet, it will in time)
Lovely, thanks for the confirmation. Keep up the good work guys!

Well, I'd upgrade to 2.0 final anyway knowing as I do that there are security related issues in RC3 that have been addressed by 2.0 final...

To be honest, though, there are no major DB changes between RC3 and final so the process should be virtually identical anyway from an import point of view; of course if the structure's been modified through mods, your mileage can and will vary.
Thanks Arantor, I'll go ahead with the upgrade.

Out of curiosity, what is your view on UTF8 and is it beneficial for our SMF builds to be converted or will Wedge not support it?

Very excited about Wedge, however my forum is currently running SMF 2.0 RC3 and so I'm concerned that I won't be fully geared up for the transition to Wedge on its final release.

...so, would I be best running through the process of upgrading my forum to SMF 2.0 Final now, in preparation for a cleaner upgrade to Wedge?

Bad luck with the workstation, Virtualization is the key!! Download a copy of VMWare Desktop edition (its free), then P2V (VMWare Converter) your desktop development environment, then in the event of you losing everything you simply mount the image on any other PC!

Down here (Bristol), Java developers can demand up to £45k if they're experienced, PHP developers can also fetch up to £40k but its more of a flooded market. .net developers are ten a penny!!

FAQs / [FAQ] Re: Why are there so many features? / Isn't that bloated?

My first post here, and I am already impressed by the amount of work that has already been done to improve on SMF. Personally I have used SMF for about 6 years, with each version release I am frustrated by the lack of excitement from new features, functionality etc - I end up questioning whether the upgrade time I had spent testing/implementing was really worth it.

In my opinion, you can never have too many features and so I'm feeling really positive about Wedge being packed full of them! My only hesitation with 'featured' apps is that features get neglected, so long as each piece of functionality is kept up to date, I suspect that Wedge will be the most popular PHP forum on the net!

Having read the background behind the formation of Wedge, I'm rather disappointed with the SMF team for kicking out two guys (even if Nao can be a controversial character :D) that have clearly contributed massively to the codebase and evolution of SMF - I wonder whether their v2.0 Final will be rejoiced, or rejected by their fanbase.

I'm happy to run any beta testing that you might need, keep up the good work.

p.s. great domain name!!
