Makes me wonder if the UK went through the same ordeal as France... Probably did! We had a similar short number (13, I think? Or 12), which got replaced by a bunch of private company numbers, all starting with 118. I think the one that got the bigger share was 118 218 -- and that's because they actually had a theme song singing the numbers.

No, here's still 999 (and 112) for emergency numbers. 118* numbers here are for directory enquiries (it used to be just 192, but it's now out to different companies, of which 118-118 is probably the most successful with their gimmicky marketing)

I heard 911 works on UK landline, but I never had the courage to try that out and speaking of 118 118, yeah their marketing is gimmicky.
