So, during this weekend, I found myself in an interesting position. My Windows 7 started behaving like it's 1995.
Basically, all of the fonts somehow forgot how to show Unicode characters. That is, I have plenty of Japanese programs and folders -- they show up as squares in the Start Menu and in my File Explorer. I was using PT Sans as my main font, so I changed it to my alternative preference, Tahoma, with the same effect. I tried many, many fonts, and it seems that only one font recognizes Japanese (and CJK in general) characters, and that is Segoe UI. Heck, even Arial and Times New Roman don't work, eh..?!

I've temporarily set my font to Segoe UI, but even though I love it for web design, I hate that font for daily use, I find it too... stylish, and not as well hinted for my monitor as PT Sans is, for instance.

I've done countless web searches on this issue, and it seems I'm not alone, but I really can't fix it, and was wondering if anyone had ever had the same issue..? Of course, not everyone needs Japanese support on their system, but whatever...

Maybe a reboot will fix it, but currently I'm still working on my NAS setup, so it's a no-go.

That weekend really, absolutely, pathetically SUCKED. -_-

* Arantor still has to mentally remember that Nas is not a colleague from the SMF days :P

(He helped build SimpleDesk with the UI aspect of it and did the theme for simpledesk.net, which oddly enough I found today in my archives, yup, I had the theme on my local install and proved SD worked with SD's theme haha)

Yeah network as storage is kind of a silly acronym really. Isn't the distribution and storage of data the whole point of a network. I used my old dual core system that had raid built in to make a storage and media server. I think I ended up using http://www.nas4free.org/ . Anyway I am rambling for some reason

Network-attached-storage, i.e a device whose sole purpose is dumping pure storage onto a small network. I have a NAS kicking around somewhere but I realised that for backups, a Firewire-attached hard drive was vastly quicker than pumping GBs across a wifi link.

Oh I know what NAS is it just seems like a pointless title, most sold are just computers with a different name. I think my problem with some naming is when I worked at an ISP we had a wireless internet product we called "Spiderweb" It was a small computer box with flash storage with a light flavor of linux and two wireless radios, on to receive data from and one to broadcast. Thing was we sold it for like 150-200 when the customer could have bought a competent repeater/router hybrade for 50-100 and flashed the firmware and done the same thing. Hell might have got better range between users that way.But the owner of the ISP got the parts CHEAP so he got to make a 80% markup that includes the tenish minutes it toke to build them and flash their memory.

Rebooting fixed my font issue, as (slightly) expected. :)

NAS interest is not in speed or anything... It's really mostly when you need to share data with your LAN users; although, in my case, I don't, but I wanted a NAS to get a small setup of 3 disks + 1 backup. This is way better than, well, having an external drive to backup your stuff. Either you back everything up --> waste of space, because you don't really want to back up all of your data, or you back up selected files, in which case you'll mostly have to do it manually, and you risk forgetting about it...

For years, I backed up my disks with Cobian Backup, but it wasn't up to the task of maintaining my many drives, so I gave up.
Now I have 8TB for my storage, which is more than enough for the next, hmm, couple of months... :P

The only thing I'm wary of, is this: data safety is the most important thing in a NAS. It is supposed to give a LED warning if one of the drives is failing. However, NONE of the drives I lost in the past, gave me any S.M.A.R.T. signals before failing. Actually, I tried today with my broken drive, and it's giving me a health score of something like 90%... Even though it's deader than dead!!
I don't know if I can trust the NAS to really spot deficient drives, but, well... Errr... I guess in a few years time, I'll replace it progressively with an 8-drive bay.

Also, Godboko, when you hit 'Like' on Pete's post above, it generated an error in the log. A few others triggered one too, but I wanted to ask if you could unlike, then like it again? (And possibly also like this post, just for my tests...)

I'm trying to determine if the error is due to the upgrade process hiccups from yesterday, or an actual bug in the current code base; thanks!

I've actually fixed the notifications bug, the fix is in SVN and hopefully can be uploaded here tomorrow.
