Windows 7 runs fine on my laptop obsolete
« on March 28th, 2012, 05:19 AM »
Hi everyone, I bought this laptop for almost 7 years and works great, I decided to be updated and forget the outdated XP. :)

Using Windows 7 for almost 2 years despite such limited hardware that I have run well, faster than XP. ;)

I can still do many things and Wedge looks great from Windows 7 :P

I guess everyone has a PC netbooks and more powerful than mine XD :^^;:

Ancient laptops representing! My Dell D620 is still going strong, in fact I'm posting from it right now.

It used to have 1GB of mem but I upgraded it to two. Its main weakness is the small hard disk drive, and a slightly weak processor.

In addition, the backlight is beginning to fade

By stock, do you mean sp0 or sp2/3? The former, not really, but the latter, yes, faster, for some functions. It's more noticeable on older machines. Also XP on AMD iis a touch slower than on Intel, but you won't notice without benchmarks.

The only question remaining is where Win 8 lies in the speed and performance area. My guess is slower than 7, but a bit quicker than XP.

My main issue with Win8 is that I'd rather not have Metro enabled by default on a PC install...
Other than that, well... I've just noticed that MS released a consumer version of Win8. I only installed the original developer preview. Will try to install it now... In a virtual box as usual.

Performance mode? As in laptop power scheme? For a while I think there is some kind of turbo mode in Win8
Not as a core feature (and not laptop) using desktop PC. You can see I'm also using Game Booster program. Also i closed some Windows core services like Wireless (I'm not at home & will not be for some) so sorry cannot give you full list of services i closed.

Well, I knew that Win7 ran well on older hardware; the PC I've just obsoleted has a 5 year old motherboard sporting a AMD Athlon x64 4200X2 processor, I had to upgrade a couple of years back to Win7 as I was doing some work that would have gone above the 3GB memory limit (and I only had XP 32 bit) so I went from XP 32-bit to 7 64-bit running on 8GB RAM and it ran surprisingly well.

Maybe I should go for 16gb. 600 tabs is already too much for Opera to handle :p
and friends ask me why I should need ~50 tabs -.-
(12 gb on my tower btw :P)

I have 900 tabs across two Opera installs. 300 tab in Firefox. 20 tabs in ie9 and Safari. 50 tabs in Chrome but the last three suck when it comes to large sessions. Chrome being the worst since they got rid of their vertical tab feature.
