Language tags

It's easy enough. Noisen has 'fr' and 'en' tags that allow you to write your messages in both French and English, and the end user will see the text in their default language. It works well, but it may need some reworking. Should we use something like [lang=en]? Or is it too long? How would you add to add languages to the list? Things like that.

I'd personally prefer [lang=en]text[/lang] instead of [en]text[/en].

It should only be seen for those who speak the language instead of everyone...

Well... That's the point of the tags, eh ;)

@TE> fr and en tags are actually in use at wedge.org (since it's based off noisen), so use nobbc for them ;)

Though I don't see this being used often, I agree with TE that one tag with the language as a parameter seems like a more extensible solution that's less prone to accidental use.

Odd you say so, I've seen forums that are like I'm saying and it's quite useless...

Dr, I don't understand what you're saying. Have a look at the Aeva Media website. The site description (in the top left corner) is multilingual. Switch to the other language and it'll be in that language.
It could be message-wide, but I like the idea of a tag best, because it allows you to do some things like, you write a message in English, and then you think of a joke and it doesn't translate well to English, so you just write it in Spanish, enclosed in an 'es' tag.

I'm talking about my previous post, sorry I didn't quote, too lazy for doing it :eheh:

If you're looking for outside opinion, then I think it'll be useful to some but irrelevant to most and maybe should be a mod instead of core.

As for being [en] or [lang=en] I agree with TE and Aaron that lang would be more extensible, not only to other languages but perhaps other opt-in opt-out comments.

For example, on my motorcycle forum we have a lot of 'how-to' posts relating to maintenance. The poster of one of these might like to put certain paragraphs of extra instruction into a lang=beginner tag so that those with more advanced skill / experience don't have to read them. Of course for this you'd need an admin language-maintenance screen to add tags, and a user profile screen to add themselves to one / many.

Maybe that's too complicated for users, and the best way to meet your 'Spanish joke' scenario is to use the spoiler tag, maybe add a reason why it's hidden.

However, like you say it will be really useful for those who can post in more than one language.

lang tag: personally I realy like it and I go with the arguments of Aaron and TE about [lang=<lang>] and not [<lang>] ;)

I'm not sure if it should be a mod or not and I'm not trying to make my own decision on that.

Having read the private tag post I realise what I've written is a pile of [en]poo[/en][fr]merde[/fr][cockney]pony[/cockney] and my beginner / advanced stuff could be handled by that tag and groups

Just as a note: I've decided to go with the [lang=fr] syntax only... This tag will probably get more development time later.

It's very simple:

For people that only speak one language this will be almost useless (with the exceptions Fargo was pointing out) but for people who use 2 or more languages in our day-to-day life (as me for example) this is just brilliant and a "must have".
