Hello... and my request
« on June 2nd, 2011, 06:22 PM »
Hi Wedge community:

I'm very excited for this project and I hope it sees the light soon :)

I'm a big fan of SMF, but I know it has some stuff that could be implemented, and with this community it can be done pretty easy.

Some features I've been thinking could make this software uber awesome could be the following:

  • Media / download integration
  • Allow some forum sections with a blog visualization
  • facebook and twitter integration
  • bbcode designer: so bbcode can be customized in the forum and not depending of mods.
Well, I wish total success to this project and keep the good work :D

Wow, it's almost like you read our plans or something.

Media integration... did we mention that Aeva Media's author is one of the developers and that AeMe is integrated into Wedge directly?

Blog support... yup. I'm planning to move my WP blog to Wedge once that's done.

Facebook and Twitter... that's a bit more tenuous. Certainly we have plans to support Facebook Connect on some level, likely the Twitter login as well. More than that we can't say yet.

bbcode editor... I already made the first step in that in putting all the bbcode in the database. More to come on that too, but yes, some kind of editing facility.

Easiest way to reply would be: just read through the official feature list for Wedge 1.0 ;)
http://wedge.org/pub/feats/
Everything's mentioned in the thematic sub-boards. Except for FB/Twitter but I'm keeping an eye on this and maybe we'll add something in Wedge 1.1 -- probably not 1.0 though, it's pretty much feature-locked when it comes to 'big' features. (We had to draw a line now that SMF2 is going gold.)

PS: I'll probably add support for thoughts like on wedge.org, though -- but it won't be interfaced with social networks is all.

Speaking of media integration...will Wedge have any kind of of support for mobile users viewing the gallery? Presently in SMF the Media menu is not available to mobile users and entering the URL can get them to the gallery but the display is not good on their phone. Not sure if it's feasible but I have a lot of people asking for better access to the gallery from their phone.

Facebook and Twitter integration...I ran across an issue with this in Bloc's free premium Argentum theme with Facebook integration. My site is mainly a work site and people access it from work and when I had the Facebook integration enabled a lot of people that had Facebook blocked by their corporate firewalls either could not access the forum or it was very slow for them. So if you do integrate those it would be nice for users to be able to enable/disable from their profile. I had to disable it in the admin panel which means it's either an all or nothing proposition.

BBCode editor...Just wondering if you have ever given any thought to replacing it with something like CKEditor or one of the others available that has more formatting features than the BBCode editor. Being in the Print/Design arena I have a lot of creative types. My biggest complaint I get from users is they can't wrap text around an image in SMF. I believe CKEditor and others have this ability without having to create tables etc...

To your last point, regarding using CKEditor or something similar... well, I envisage us having a bbcode that handles wrapping text around an image. There are at least 3 mods for SMF to achieve this with a new bbcode!

As much as I like the idea of something like CKEditor, I find myself reluctant to commit to any one of them - though CKEditor is easily my preference compared to the others. Firstly, they're all huge, and secondly they all carry an inherent security risk as well as an increased regimen of updates for browser compatibility that I'm finding myself unsure about committing to. It's one of those that sounded fantastic but the more I look at it the more I find myself unsure, you know? But it's likely we'll use CKEditor in the end - I know others are doing so, and with good reason.

But honestly, as a technical person, I can write so much faster in bbcode than I can ever manage fighting with those editors - on my WP blog, which has TinyMCE built in, I gave up trying to use much in the way of formatting simply because it has a habit of just getting it wrong no matter what I do with it. And if I as a technical user have that trouble I can only imagine what regular users go through - it is not for nothing that Facebook's Notes feature is very limited!

3 mods for SMF that wraps text around an image? Do you know the name of them?

Yes, I agree they can be a challange but the creative types feel limited by the current bbcode editor. And I find the WYSIWYG editor to be a little buggy on SMF as well.

Search for float, should get you going.

a little buggy
I long since started calling it WYSIWTF.

Yes, I appreciate that 'creative types' find bbcode limiting, but I find more people have trouble trying to cudgel a WYSIWYG editor into behaving than they ever do once they start trying bbcode, assuming bbcode is flexible enough - which it usually isn't. Making bbcode more flexible balances this out quite well in practice. (I should note: I used to work in an office in London. I spent at least 30% of my day helping people fight with Word to lay things out how they wanted, for exactly the same reason.)

Don't get me wrong. They would struggle with it. Most are lucky to be able to turn on their computers without help. But they still want it.

Very true.

Also, I found the mod "Float BBCODE". Thanks for the tip. Works like a charm on SMF. Hope to be able to wrap text in Wedge too.
