Off-topic / Re: Scary Times Helping Other Admins

So I got up this morning and I finally saw the icons on that forum. So I thought whew, glad that got resolved. I PMed the Admin and said they looked great! He said "I still don't see them!"

I said refresh your browser and you should see them, I see them here just fine.

He PM'ed back a few minutes later "Oh now I see them - thanks!"

504 is when there's a timeout happening between the request getting to nginx, being passed on to whatever to handle it, and it getting back to nginx. Interesting... I wonder if the site is actually using nginx + PHP/FPM or using nginx as a reverse proxy to Apache. Might be interesting to find out.
I dunno man, but I hope he doesn't think several innocent .png files are that malevolent. :p

An electronics forum I go to uses a plain jane SMF install so I offered the Admin to spice it up with some better new post/no new post icons (see attached) more oriented towards electronics. I chose to make them oscilloscope displays with and without a signal.

Well he really liked them, so he PM'ed me back that he uploaded them but nothing changed. :sob:

Well, first of all, I only linked him to two of the needed files since I didn't want to waste time making all of them yet until I knew he liked them. Second, I have no idea where he "uploaded" them to. :hmm:

I just sent him a full set of files and the specific path to upload the files. Sometimes these people scare me. :o

I'm sitting here refreshing his forum waiting for his icons to change ...

Oh Dear - Now it shows 504 Gateway Time-out!

How about in this board:
"Site Comments, Issues and Concerns
Comments on this slick site? Post them here. (SMF bugs should be reported in Bug Reports.)"
"Dear Mr Sm.org Administrator, have you considered upgrading this forum to Wedge? It is based on SMF but has more features and fewer bugs :)"
I was just trying looking at the Chit Chat board over there and got this error -

Unable to load the 'main_above' template.

The former... guess what's already done?

The latter... for the server load it would likely generate, not so smart (Facebook and Twitter don't run on cheap shared hosting unlike Wedge...)
Aha thanks - passing along down the chain. :)

An update counter in the browser tab would be nice. Like when I'm on FB or Twitter it will tell me I have X amount of updates in the tab for that site. And update counter for subscribed topics would be nice. Does that make sense?

Features / Re: Poll enhancements

LimeSurvey - I went back and checked.

But in addition to polls what about surveys from within the forum? :hmm:
(See - I'm de-nesting quotes by hand :))
Quote from Arantor on May 30th, 2013, 02:39 AM
Well... if you can have multiple polls per topic, where people can vote for multiple answers or score things, and the admin can see who voted what... don't you already have that ;)
You're probably right (as usual) but I thought a survey gathered the data together in a final presentation. It is a bit much for two or three questions I'll admit.

As you said it would be useful though, at any rate. :)

Thoughts?
Yes.
Quote
* Allowing admin to set the maximum number of poll answers (currently no limit)
Not sure when I'd use it but it falls into the category of " the more tools the better".
Quote
* Fixing the bug where way too many answers can cause issues
Comment unnecessary :).
Quote
* Option to display the choices randomly to people viewing the poll (because people have a tendency to pick the first one), though the order would remain consistent for viewing results
Very cool idea. +1
Quote
* Multiple questions per poll
This sounds a bit like a survey.

Thinking about Beer, what is your rating of the following brews on a scale from 1 to 10?

1. Guinness
2. Dos Equis
3. Killian's Irish Red
4. Coors

Now thinking about the cost, what is the maximum you would pay for a six pack?

1. $5
2. $6
3. $7
4.  >$8

You know there was (is ?) a survey app that you used to be able to install in Cpanel. I used it for a while years ago for surveys that we put together. But in addition to polls what about surveys from within the forum? :hmm:
Quote
* Voting with points rather than individual votes (e.g. having 5 points to distribute between 3 answers)
Why not?
Quote
* Pie charts as an optional display type (may or may not use the chart code I had before, dunno)
Again, nice to have as it presents an area to the eye rather than bland numbers.

It has happened that we've offered useful information back to them in the past and got it linked to here, e.g. I seem to recall debates about SMF development, when we'd already done it... hell, I posted a few requests for features with screenshots of what I'd already done ;)
@Arantor: This is all open source right? You know I admire all of the people who do that, from whatever camp. Busting my ass on a really cool function for months just to give it away, that's truly admirable.

Officially, linking here from That Other Place is still officially verboten, but if there's a useful post here, then it's worth linking ;)
Oh well then, there's lot's of useful posts here. And - who defines what "useful" is anyway - I mean we all know everyone's opinion is valid. I'll help make sure there's plenty of useful posts to link to here - tee hee hee.

Right?

RIGHT!

So, I couldn't spare that crowd of any useful information on the internets, wherever it may be, now could I? :+1:

I'd expect word-of-mouth to spread the news of course. Then we could go to other forums, especially ... that other one ... and make some noise. Might be in bad taste so I'd make sure it was OK here first. :)

Have you [1] any idea how many people are planning to start using this or converting to this when it's released? Any wild ass guesses?

I'd expect you foresee a large amount of support in the first few months too, but that's to be expected.

Well... SMF and Wedge both offer the ability to cap signature images to a reasonable size, and both offer users the ability to opt out of seeing signatures if they so choose.
And sometimes a reasonable size is zero. I've seen some ridiculous flashing bullshit that was really aggravating so ...
Quote
Note that Wedge infractions can even handle the case of a user with an annoying signature and you can remove it from them as part of the warning ;)
This will come in very handy.

I don't like forum signatures and always remove the code from the display template. It always serves as a bid distraction especially the ones with big flashy images and also looks ugly on mobile templates.
I like them as long as the goofy images some people use are kept to a reasonable size. As long as members can check a box if they don't want to see them I don't see removing them for everyone. If an asshat is making a sig that you don't like just remove it and send them a PM as to why.

I've used sigs to make protests at other forums too when the staff are being idiots. I know bad boy. :p

I know somebody doing exactly that right now on ... that other forum. :)[1]
