Off-topic / Re: System visitations: MyBB 1.6.10
« on May 29th, 2013, 08:42 PM »
The issue of XHTML is as old as meta tags which I believes have no value to SEO of present. It's just Google trying to impose their self righteousness on others. Heavy websites like Facebook does not pass the test.
I cannot say how mush wedge will use server resources because I have not tested it but since it have SMF structure, it will do much better than MYBB in server resources consumption and performances. Mybb with many plugin in shared server with 50k hits/month, your host company will just ban you. I am posting this because they Mybb fan boys says that mybb consumes less resources than SMF.
As of Elkarte, haven't heard of them, tried to visit the website and got thisQuote - Some webmasters just keep on committing the same 'sin'.
SMF2.1 these looks neat and the navigation is just beauty the only minus is not showing the posts under username in display template.

I was thinking it was due to smf clean xhtml format, you miss a tag,it labels you as a criminal.
Most smf mods works on default theme but gives error in custom themes.
And yes smf 2.1 theme is just BEUTY!

Most smf mods needs manual code edits to work in custom themes and some leave some mess after uninstallation.

Some time ago, I just decided to just seat back here and read as much as possible but the truth is - silent is boring.
I am using mybb and here is what I have to say
Mybb default theme for 1.6.8 cannot be used by any serious webmaster, it's nothing but a joke. How can they be so backward? I have to get a premium theme.
I like the stats summary in the admin panel a lot, SMF should consider this. The admin panel is ugly and so is smf.
Apart from the default theme, the forum is unusable without doing some edits like
1. The threaded move - removed instantly (why are they still leaving it in the core)
2. Thread ratings stars - removed as it makes the forum looks childish.
I did many manual edits that I can't really upgrade to the latest version because I am not free now to re edit after upgrade.
Server Resources
My forum is hosted in shared server and I find myself breaking my hosts tos because of the server resources the forum is consuming, (I'm getting only about 50k - 60k hits/month as my forum is still new). The guy that hosted me have to upgrade my account to a better plan though am still paying the shared hosting fee, he's just a great guy. What I want to point out is that mybb is killing my server resources, most time users will see mysql error... Pls mysql.sock bla bla bla.
I was reading how great the version 1.8 is so I downloaded it and installed it on wamp. The only clear progress I noticed is the improvement on the default theme but smf 2.1 default the he is far better (in appearance) than it.
The mod I liked a lot at mybb is mybb Seo mod and it's free. As off there support, they are average and I have to say it's unfair to be comparing them with smf as smf has the best support community around because almost every user of smf is ready to help one another and smf have great guys like N3rve, K@,and yes Arantor! The only support I know is good in mybb is one guy with username - polerbear (?). Most others looks like American teenagers looking for some few bucks :)
A yes mybb handles themes much better than smf.

The Pub / Re: Looking for volunteers to test the Wedge private alpha!
« on May 18th, 2013, 04:26 PM »
I think I'm a beta tester myself, just happy to be testing the software from the user backend for now. I may apply to beta test as admin user in the next round. A lot has happened before I joined, just staying back, reading as I have a lot do for now.
I don't want to sound rude to anyone but I suggest this thread should be locked if it will be a distraction to the developers. #justsaying

« on May 14th, 2013, 03:56 AM »Incidentally I know EXACTLY what caused this because I had to go poking around for something else.
And I have to say, it's sheer fucking incompetence. I left them a comment on Github as to what's wrong and why it's wrong. I don't see how he even tested it.
For those playing along at home, Lab added a feature whereby users can set the registration mode (no registration, immediate registration, member approval etc.) during registration. Except the genius managed to put the query into the code BEFORE THE SETTINGS TABLE IS EVEN MADE.
Now, he's already convinced I'm trolling him (cf. the comments on 2.1's repo from HappyTroglodyte which he thinks is me, when it's not) so I left the commentary here and left merely a factual report plus a suggestion *there*.
Now I've broken the installer in the past, but I wouldn't commit something I clearly couldn't have tested properly (or if I do, I leave a note to t hat effect)

« on May 13th, 2013, 09:26 PM »the change to install_2-1_mysql.sql was one word/column. that should not cause the install to fail and the change is in the members table not the settings table.
if you are having issues with the install really using sm.org is the best place to request help so they can track down the issue and fix it in the correct files.

I of course run the install.php and got the error on the third step, I am thinking this is a new bug from their recent edit, install_2-1_mysql.sql was edited 4days ago hence the problem may be from there. Those that install earlier might not get the problem OR it might be from me, maybe I don't know how to install simple script again ...old age.
NB: I am using mysql in the Wamp server,

« on May 13th, 2013, 08:51 PM »so you did not copy the install.php file and the sql files to the main folder?
also you dont need to create the settings_bak.php file you move the Settings.php file to the main folder and let the installer populate the file.
also this forum is not really a place to get smf support as i understand, issues with 2.1 should be posted on sm.org so the developers can help with the issues and fix any bugs that may exist. by posting here you will not get help from the developers and most likely they will miss the bugs that may be posted.
BTW, SMF 2.1 Apha theme is neatly designed, I kind of like it.

« on May 13th, 2013, 08:20 PM »have you read http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/User:Emanuele/guide/How_to_create_an_install_from_repo ?
it sounds like you have not as you dont create a Settings_bak.php or copy anything into Settings.php the install script should do the work for you.
You can find these files in the directory other except for Settings_bak.php, so first thing enter the other directory and copy those files to the root directory. When this is done, make a copy of Settings.php and rename it to Settings_bak.php
* There is no Settings_bak.php which is needed, so create Settings_bak.php
* Copy the content of Settings.php to Settings_bak.php
Am I missing something there?

@xrunner
I tried it on my server, the same. Maybe I should delete the Settings_bak.php, let me see how it goes.
