Off-topic / My Journey with Wedge.
« on April 27th, 2015, 11:46 AM »
Hi,
This is a sort of Diary on creating a Forum using Wedge forum Software which I don't think will be a 'big' board or something special but I don't want it to be a mediocre forum either. The title of the thread 'my journey with wedge' may be strange but I don't have any other thread title that may be more suitable to it.
What type if forum do I want to create? I want to create a Nigerian Movies Forum. Why Nigerian Movies? I think Nigeria Movies have a huge following not only in Nigeria but Africa at a whole. Is there any popular Nigerian Movies Forum? YesCode: [Select] but I think they are not getting many things right...
Why Wedge?
This is a choice I made after some considerations, I have 4 Forum software in mind which are
Xenforo : I purchased Xenforo Software license immediately after Paypal added my country, the software is not bad but I just don't see the much hype. The message display is annoying, 'ajaxyfying' everything including the member card pop up can become so boring after sometime, if you request a little mod, some of the developers will charge you up to $300 to do it for you.
SMF: A great forum software and free, with very friendly support community. So strange but the forum have no mobile theme, I understand 2.1 is responsive but it is still not okay for me, I need forum with a separate mobile theme. I've came across Dragoon's Smf4Mobile in which I was impressed but the painful fact is that is not usable in Opera Mini browser and about 60% of Nigerian internet users are uses Opera Mini browser so the answer is - No! Elkarte is also great but the same Responsive issue goes with them.
MYBB: A great forum software despite the childish support community, Euan, Leedfish and Yaldaram are great guys though, I am currently using Mybb in a new http://sajforum.com. The mobile plugin/theme is great but they have no great media gallery addon. Creating a movie forum with no gallery is just not acceptable. The performance of Mybb is questionable, that's why I am using it on a VPS running on a highly Nginx to web server.
Wedge: A better version of SMF with State-of-Art media gallery built in the core, have all the strength of smf and none of it's weaknesses. Still on beta but it is 100% usable. The developer is just not far away and also a great guy that is available to help when called upon. The Moderation Filter will also be useful in doing some moderation job while I concentrate on Content and quality of the forum. Many medium sized forum are using them too. I chose Wedge over Mybb because of the media functionality and security, also I think it performs better than Mybb (I have no proof to this for now).
My Journey so far.
* I already have a domain I will like to use for it - NerdNg.com.
* I have also purchased a cloud ssd vps with Vultr.
* I have Installed Nginx Webserver ( please don't tell me about Apache because I have decided not to go back to it again after leaving them since two years ago).
* I have installed Wedge on test folder @ http://nerdng.com/wedge but I have disabled guest access as I am currently working on it. I'ill soon post my observation once I take another close look to it again.
I will always update this thread, please fell free to advise if you feel like.
Thanks.

Off-topic / Contact vs Followers?
« on December 23rd, 2013, 06:10 PM »
Wedge uses Contacts, Xenforo uses Followers.
Contacts sounds old fashion and a bit confusing to me, many users will definitely find it hard to use the feature.
Followers sounds modern, straightforward and easily understood hence easier to use by not so technical members. The advent of twitter have a hand in this.
To me I will prefer Followers, just followers.
This is just my opinion, that's why I posted the thread in off-topic board.

Off-topic / Is Wordpress actually Most SEO CMS?
« on August 22nd, 2013, 03:51 PM »
There many hype following wordpress in various websites, forums etc which relates to webmasters/SEO that Wordpress is the most Search Engine Friendly cms. I have my doubt initially but I decided to do my own testing. I downloaded and install in a newly purchased .com domain name, virtually no backlink apart for a few from my blogger blog. I am surprise to see it rank high with two weeks in both Bing and yahoo search No.3! Not that ranked in Google as I believe Google will pick it up in the next update. Do I add my keyword is celebrity and entertainment related which means more competition.
How do wordpress do this?

Features / On Mobile Theme...
« on August 21st, 2013, 12:27 PM »
Nice work so far, great improvement on the mobile theme. Fit's my 4.5' android screen well.
My little observation on using the mobile phone (with opera mini browser) in accessing wedge.org
* Works better this time, the width fits my 4.5' screen well. I believe it will do well in smaller screen.
* The ajax function not working on opera mini and when the page reloads, it doesn't work at all
Eg. If you click 'action' it will reload the page and do nothing. This bug is not in other browsers like default html android browser, ucweb or opera mobile.

Off-topic / Rename 'Notify'?
« on June 14th, 2013, 12:27 PM »
The truth is I don't know how many times I clicked on 'Notify'/'Subscribe' in any forum I am posting, recently I came across a Forum that did it in different way, it just 'Say Follow this Topic'. I gladly clicked it and it got me thinking, why not use Follow Topic instead on 'Notify'/'Subscribe'. I know it's the same thing but a few word changes may work more than we expect. The ajax confirmation will say something like this Are you sure you want to follow this topic? in place of Are you sure you wish to enable notification of new replies for this topic?
I am also thinking this
* Subscribe/Notify sounds old school, modern social networking use something like Follow.
* They is also a felling that once you click 'Notify'/'Subscribe' your mailbox will be filled with spam etc.
I also know this can simply be done by editing language file, just suggestion.
Thanks.

Features / Wedge Link Structure
« on June 10th, 2013, 05:45 PM »
I don't know if this is the best board for this post, mod please move to a suitable category if it is in a wrong place.
I have been testing wedge via user interface, I have many requests/suggestions. I will like to start with the link structure.
I commend the dynamic link, it is great but I will like the link to be like this
User Profile Link - wedge.org/wanchope
Board Link - wedger.org/features not wedge.org/category/board/childboard etc
Topic Link - wedger.org/27183(topic number)/topic title.
There is also available feature in MYBB SEO mode which gives the admin ability to set the maximum amount of words in the link
eg, a long topic like smf and wedge is not different, just smf with different name and fewer functions removed, said by a clown will be reduce to wedge.org/17264/smf-and-wedge-is-not ( I was let to know that long topic link is not good for seo as well) besides something like this wedge.org/2783/smf-and-wedge-is-not-different-just-smf-with-different-name-and-fewer-functions-removed-said- by-a-clown looks ugly.
Thanks.

Off-topic / I don't Like Forum Signatures
« on May 29th, 2013, 09:37 PM »
I don't like forum signatures and always remove the code from the display template. It always serves as a bid distraction especially the ones with big flashy images and also looks ugly on mobile templates.

Off-topic / Advice on This?
« on May 13th, 2013, 07:34 PM »
I have this domain name I registered last year which I have installed social network gpl script (oxwall). Oxwall is great but there are multiples problems which includes.
1.There is no mobile theme for it, it looks ugly on mobile view though great on pc but the fact remains that about 80% of my targeted audience (students) are using mobile phone on accessing the internet.
2. There is no control on spam bots, even the question and answer script is not working, there inbuilt watchdog (using stop forum spam) is not working as well, I just visited their support forum and found out that almost everybody is complaining about it, this in particular will be a big problem will the website grow.
3. Their forum plugin is great but again it is showing multiple link in a single thread and Google is indexing them all which happens to be against their SEO rule.
My question is, is it good to uninstall the oxwall and use SMF for now and ( wedge when it comes public).
The website in question is
http://campusng.com
Thanks

Off-topic / Most Big Boards are Ugly, Why?
« on May 8th, 2013, 05:02 PM »
I have been thinking about this for a very long time now. Why are big boards around always ugly and unwelcome environment to the users? IGN Boards recently changed to Xenforo, before that the user Interface was rubbish and the website theme itself was trash.Giaonline is another forum and get me thinking...meh! Lets not mention nairaland was a let down to SMF (as in theme) until it was recently rewritten with python. Still trash on PC but the Mobile theming is the best around. Why is it that big boards around are ugly and dirty?

Off-topic / Surviving Your Competitor
« on May 4th, 2013, 12:59 AM »
This is very annoying or better put frustrating. Having a competitor who have been there for about 10 years. Membership running to over 1 million, post running to over 12 million. You are new, very few inactive members. Most posts are made by you. In such case, how do you survive? Suggestions are needed.
Thanks.
Thanks.
