Features: Upcoming / Re: Language tags
« on June 10th, 2011, 10:57 PM »
It's very simple:

For people that only speak one language this will be almost useless (with the exceptions Fargo was pointing out) but for people who use 2 or more languages in our day-to-day life (as me for example) this is just brilliant and a "must have".

It's good to be in charge here -- and to have so many people trust us, so that it doesn't seem so bad to be under a Pete/Nao dictatorship (which is, ultimately, what this is.)
Dictatorship is not the same as leadership.

I will never follow a dictator (being born in Spain in the 50's I have a lot of experience about that) but I am very happy to follow a couple of good leaders with a strong vision.

Maybe is that. I also like the left better but maybe because I am already used to see those colours.

I can see what you want to do with the right one though, but what I like less there is the colour of the background.

Have you tried with other backgrounds?

Off-topic / Re: Doctor Who
« on June 5th, 2011, 01:20 PM »
<PRV> I normally use veetle.com and/or SopCast to watch things like the NBA, important Snooker games, etc, but haven't seen in any of them any Dr. Who episodes.

Anyway, following Arantor's suggestion I have found this page:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw

So for a while I will try to watch all the episodes archived there until I catch up.

There is one thing I don't understand.

Are they showing Dr. Who in all the TVs all over the world (but Spain) or are you watching it through an internet channel or something like that?

I used to watch it ages ago when I lived in Scotland (and I loved it) but here in Spain there is only one TV channel that is showing a couple of seasons of Dr. Who and another couple of seasons of Torchwood (old ones) repeating the same episodes all over again, but cannot get new ones.

When I saw you were talking about it here, I thought you were getting it only in UK and France, but I have seen people from all over the world commenting about it (even Dr Malboro from Argentina) and I started to wonder if maybe there is a chance of getting it through an internet channel or something.

I'd rather not distribute, even to Friends, an alpha until SMF is out.
That was my point in the first place. The sooner they release 2.0 the sooner I get an alfa.  :eheh:

I could make a common admin account at the demo website, though...
A little risky if 2 or 3 of us are playing with it at the same time, straining the software to the limits trying to find if it would break somehow. No one would know for sure who broke it and when. (But a good idea if we just make sure that it's only one of us playing with it at a time). (And with a good security copy of the DB stored somewhere  :eheh: ).

After waiting for so long I don't mind to wait a little longer and do things properly. (It's a lot easier to find bugs when you have the code at the same time you are playing with the software).

And anyway my main concern just now (apart from looking for bugs) is the anti-spam security.

My theory just now is that (with all the new implements Arantor has done in the code) we won't need to change my anti-spam mods in SMF and convert them into Wedge plug-ins.

Maybe I will do that anyway some time but just as a practice exercise (to learn how to create Wedge plug-ins) but not as a real necessity. (Maybe good only for "too paranoid" kind of people).

Anyway, to see if this is true or not, the only way I have is to check it in a "real life" forum. That's it: to create a test Wedge forum and send to it hundreds of thousands of different spam-bots and hack-bots and see if any of them manage to get through. (And maybe create a few more logs to see exactly what they manage to do and what they don't).

Mmmmm wait a sec. The sooner they release 2.0 the sooner I can get a Wedge pre-alfa or something similar ain't it?
Not really...
The sooner everyone will get screenshots and a demo site, yes. As for distributing an alpha, I don't want to tie our release to any SMF release dates. I've been working on it for 9 months -- the goal has always been to release this summer, although it was even starting to look unlikely that SMF2 would be out by then...
Well, I suppose that if you are planning to give us a private alfa version it won't matter if 2.0 is out or not, but for a public release I suppose you would need to wait for the change of license.

Maybe they're basing on the famous Valve time :eheh:
The big difference is I am desperate to play episode 3 but I don't really care when they release 2.0

Mmmmm wait a sec. The sooner they release 2.0 the sooner I can get a Wedge pre-alfa or something similar ain't it?

OK, forget what I said. Valve time and sm.org time ARE the same.

Anyway one thing is sure:

Anyone that fills out the registration form in 1 second is a bot. Period. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Of course they can change xrunner (or whatever similar program they use to spam) to adapt to that, but I don't think they will, because the main point in using this kind of spam programs is to register and post in thousands of forums as fast as possible.

They may find a lot easier to move to forums where they don't need to wait every time they register a new user to fill the registration form at "human" speed.

Anyway I don't like too much to talk about these things in public and would prefer to keep these conversations in our private places. The less ideas we give the enemy the better.  :eheh:

Me neither. If you are reading this forum you already know about it. LOL

Actually I think this is the only forum where I haven't got "Wedge" in my sig (apart from sm.org of course, where I had but they kindly asked me to delete it).  :eheh:

Update:

Kindred have just send me a PM saying that he is following this topic and asking me not to put any links on my mods to the Wedge.

So I have answered him saying that, as he is one of the few people in the direction of SMF I still feel a lot of respect for, if he ask me not to do it I won't do it.

Marketing's a long-term thing
Agree to that.

That's why since you said some weeks ago it was OK to spread the name "Wedge" every where I have been putting links to it in all the sites I control.

As far as SMF I have deleted the picture and link I had in my signature as Pete requested, but I am still thinking on adding one on my mods. I am working on updates for the 2 of them (mod httpBL and mod Stop Spammer) and they are used for a lot of people.

As far as I know they haven't done "yet" any new rule about it.  :eheh:

It looks like I always miss most of the news.

I had missed this topic completely, and just noticed one hour ago (reading a topic in SMF to help a friend) that Arantor's sig didn't have the Wedge picture linking here.

So I have been reading all this topic trying to decide if I should leave mine or delete it.

When I started reading the first pages I was thinking the best option would be to leave the picture in my sig until they asked me to remove it, and then answer very politely saying "Sorry, I didn't know that rule existed at all".

I even liked the idea from TE about inserting that pictures with links to here in our mods (here).

But then I read the reasoning Pete was doing about forgetting about all that childish arguments, delete all that pictures and concentrate in really important things (here).

I think you are right Pete. I will delete mine then.

Still it makes me angry the way they invent new rules every time they need one.

Plugins / Re: Plugin hooks

Going back to what you were talking some time ago:

Maybe for the most important mods, if there are any, we could offer the modder to convert their mods for them.
Quote from Arantor on November 12th, 2010, 10:45 AM
For the ones that aren't in the core itself, I'll likely put some time aside to sit and implement some of the smaller ones, partly as an example of 'how-to' and partly so we have that functionality available for people. But I'd definitely want to work with mod authors to help them make the jump.
I definitely like more Arantor's approach.

I won't learn if you do the work for me.

Well, I can learn watching examples of finished plugins. (Reading the code and seeing how it has been done). I can even learn from the "bad written ones" (I will learn what things I need to avoid) but I definitely always learn faster (and it gets better into my mind) if I do it myself. Making my own mistakes and learning the hard way how to do things properly.

If you can spare some time (whenever we are ready to start modding) to work with me (not doing my work, but supervising what I am doing and correcting me when I take the wrong path) I will end up learning faster and doing a better work.

I think.
