The Model M's have significantly stiffer switches (iirc they have the buckling spring design which requires ~25% more force) than any Cherry MX I've ever used. But to each their own. ;) I can type on mine for hours and not notice any strain.
I believe that was so when people changed from the IBM 'Selectric' typewriter the keyboard would feel more comfortable to them.

The Model M was a hand-me-down. I'm going to be looking for a new keyboard so I might try the Cherry.
Awww....try this instead

I'm old enough to remember a office full of 'klackers',  :o

Yeah I still have one around somewhere. I do like them better than rubber domes, but I use a rubber dome.

Features / Re: request for reliable backup and restore function
« on June 13th, 2011, 11:57 PM »
I used to use the backup from Admin till I needed to restore a database on one of the sites once...ouch!  >:(

My host does have a backup function in c-panel, so I have been using that. Haven't been so lucky as to have to restore one yet.

Cron job would be cool, but beyond my ability.

How odd. I like both but prefer the left too - but I wonder how much of that is my internal 'don't want change' instinct kicking in...
Not You? ???

First choice the original one. Looks great on my solid black background.
Second choice the one on the left above.
The one on the right above? Meh. Although it might look OK on a different background.

You used Notepad? Hmm that's an interesting concept but...
Myself, I always use complex copy & pasting to do it quickly and efficiently. It's always the same series of keys to push: ctrl+end, ctrl+shift+left arrow until I reach the beginning of the quote closer, shift+ctrl+end, shift+del, ctrl+home, then everytime I need to split, I do shift+insert, return, return, shift+insert, right arrow, delete, up arrow, type reply.

So it's basically a time saver to have the automatic quote splitter but I'm so used to doing this, I'm the one considering offering an option to turn it off. Well, I'll see how I deal with the simplicity once Wedge.org runs on Wedge.
Since I lost 80% of the use to my left hand I found myself taking much longer to type up anything. So copying a post to notepad allows me to edit at my speed.

But I always copied the "quote=author link=msg" yadda yadda, and pasted it above the selected paragraphs I wanted to quote.

Ctrl C and Ctrl V are used a lot, as they are easy for my left hand to reach.

That said, did I say how much I really like your idea though? Probably not, I'm not that much of a chatterbox any longer.

Poor notepad won't get used nearly as much.  :o

I'm slapping you, not because you're out of line, but because you shouldn't ask questions, then insult people who answer you.
Slap taken, no hard feelings.

And Lorenzo told you the exact answer: you can't see an Alpha version because we can't release it.
We can, however, release a demo site at any point. The details are being discussed in private.
My point was that I really didn't need to be reminded of that. Anyone who has read every post here knows that.  If I am incorrect in assuming that well........

If they tried to implement all the wizz bang things all the people want into the first release we would soon be in the same situation that smf is in, six years and still no gold, while other software has progressed way beyond smf.
SMF isn't in that situation because of that... On the contrary. They're stuck because they're not implementing anything and they got bored. (Well, from what I could gather.)

They froze SMF2's feature set in late 2007. Everything after that was supposed to be focused on fixing bugs. Quite frankly, 3 years of bug fixing? That's ridiculous. Laziness on the SMF team's part. Everything they do seems to be about discouraging action. Look at this bug report -- easy fix, done in under an hour in Wedge. A week in, they still think it's a problem on Aaron's setup.
My comment was aimed at bogging down the development with new ideas and waiting, and waiting till all the bugg's our out before we get a alpha. I am 100% committed to using this software in the future. I have spent (like others) over a year following the progress of a smf alternative, from Friends, to the flaming bird (with all the things that could not get agreed on with that) to what I felt was the best path. (the one you and Pete have taken)

Eh, we announced Wedge back in November, not our fault if you can't trust us
Quite the contrary, I have full faith in both of you and others who are helping, believe me. I'm not in any rush, I just don't want to see the same thing repeated.

To any others here. I do apologize and I regret flying off the handle. I like Pete don't like someone telling me something that I already know. So I'l just go back to reading and stay quiet for a while.

Cheers.

We cannot release an alpha version until SMF 2.0 goes gold.
I assumed that everyone including myself has known that forever.

This is the kind of answer I would have expected from the kiddies at smf forums, makes a statement that everyone here knows, and adds nothing to what I said.

Well Tex why don't you contact this company. They have written blog and forum software that doesn't use php at all.

AKCS-WWW - When you demand the best

There are many "forum systems" available around the Internet, but none offer the feature set of AKCS-WWW, including:

    * Operates with all data stored in the "back end" database; other systems store avatars and images in flat files on the file system. This crates the potential for both data loss and complicates (significantly) the ability to scale the system to larger hardware and distributed environments. With all data in the database, including uploaded image files, the entire data set is always contained in the DBMS and thus provides "one point" backup, restore, and data integrity.

    * Supports both Blogs and Discussion Forums - on one platform.

    * Is a compiled binary executable. Unlike other systems that depend on the security of "PHP" or other server-side packages (all of which have a dubious history in this regard) AKCS-WWW is one compiled binary "C" program. This also provides tremendous performance advantages that simply cannot be had from interpreted systems.

    * Runs with Postgres, an enterprise-quality DBMS.

    * Supports horizontal scaling. That is, you can have multiple hosts serving the web (running Apache) and multiple machines running the read-side database in any combination, with one master DBMS machine for writes, limited only by the aggregate wire performance between the master and slaves. This allows for extraordinarily-large installations should the need arise along with both fault-tolerance and scalability.

    * Is template driven. The screen and callout format to the database is driven by administrator-customizable templates along with CSS sheets and thus the "look and feel" is almost entirely under administrator control. Multiple "CSS" sheets may be offered to users if desired to change fonts, colors and similar user interface presentation features.

    * Supports the use of SSL for authentication and storage of passwords as one-way hashes, making password theft from the system itself nearly impossible. (Compromise of the user's machine, of course, can lead to password theft.)

    * Can operate with a "donation" or "subscription" system and other custom needs. If you can express what you want to do in SQL, you can probably make AKCS-WWW do it. The system runs a timed job out of the cron periodically which can examine the system's database tables and do virtually anything an administrator would like. A Paypal Interface package for direct PayPal connectivity is included.

    * Maintains near-forensic quality logs. All postings and messages are normally stored indefinitely - even if "changed", along with IP addresses, giving the administrator the ability to retrieve material if required by various civil authorities.

    * Extremely fast full-text search is supported as a native database function, with the ability to search millions of individual messages in tenths or hundredths of a second. Unlike most other systems that are forced to limit search activity to keep system load under control, AKCS-WWW has no similar limitation. It also "stems" words automatically ("billions" and "billion" both return the same thing) and supports complex boolean searches if desired by the user.

    * Internal RSS support allows for subscriptions, including authentication and permission enforcement, by client users.
I won't link to them, so you can search it out yourself.

OK feel free to slap my hand hard here if I'm out of line..  :o

Suggestions should always be welcomed as it gives a plan for the future.

Just my 2 phennings worth. I'm not a coder, I'm a Admin who has had to switch a few sites for customers to V-Bull because of the slow development of smf 2.
