The Pub / Re: Repository name poll! Yayer!!
« on January 15th, 2014, 05:22 PM »
You don't know what direction the software will take in the future, and if it becomes a CMS you may regret labelling it 'forum'. In fact with its media capability it's already more than a forum.

Plugins / Re: Lang. files?

Why does english need to be in the language repo if is is in the main repo? Nobody will download the english files because they already have them.

frontend and backend seems fine to me, there are worse hacked words on the internet! I agree with John regarding just doing what you prefer given that you are the author and have spent all this time on it. Nobody is going to say "He hasn't used a dash - this software must be shit!" But I disagree regarding caps and - lower case is much easier.

Ah! So the full folder structure is something like:
Code: [Select]
I guess I need to do some homework on skins / themes / templates (I thought they were just different names for the same thing).
You could rename core to weave, because you want to use the name and because it'll confuse people :)
Thanks for the replies.
/wedge
/assets
/attachments
/cache
/media
/core
/javascript
/languages <-- contains english only
/your-language-downloaded
/plugins
/skins
/sources
/templatesI guess I need to do some homework on skins / themes / templates (I thought they were just different names for the same thing).

Well given I'm not particularly techie, and I do not understand some of what you say, please go easy on me.
In your current structure (reply 57), where do the media and attachment folders go? Could attachments be a subfolder of media?
Why is there a template folder if templates are no more?
When you talk about a 'core' folder, do you mean the public_html folder or will there be a folder named 'core' with all the other folders off of it? And if so will a site's address be "mysite.tld/core/" ?
It looks mush better to have the languages folder straight off the root, however I don't quite understand the folder's structure. In the ./languages/ folder there'll be admin.english.php admin.french.php and all the other english and french files, but the other languages' files will be put where? And then moved somewhere? Will they come with the original product download or will each language pack be on wedge.org as an optional extra?
Scripts: is there any danger of a different scripting language becoming popular? If not jscript then perhaps something that's not widely heard of - yet. If so should the js folder be named 'scripts' in case someone wants to script in this other as yet unnamed and unknown scripting language and there isn't a natural home for it. As for confusion of putting php files into it, surely people will see what's what when they look and see that the folder only contains js files and php files are elsewhere.
Out of interest will there no longer be a cache folder? Or plugins? And what is the 'assets' folder?
Sorry to go on; overall the newer structures are much neater and logical than the old one.

People have to upgrade, it's the way it is. Whether it's the OS, hardware, your camera, things just start to stop working if you leave things the same.
And those are the stats now, but usage changes quickly and who knows what they will be when Wedge v1.0 is released?
And perhaps it'll keep the cheapo riff-raff away :P

Coppermine has a forum plugin, maybe a gallery with an add-on board is the way forward?

First, thank you for the update. Didn't understand all of it but what I do sounds exciting. Thank you for your time.
Post-Arantor? The threads are more techie now and the board is quieter, so I feel I am contributing less. However the alpha will obviously come out sooner, so I'll be able to test. What do you think? What would he say if he saw the code you have written? You used to say what a great coder he is. Do you still feel the same way?

Arantor, can I interrupt and take this opportunity to thank you for giving such careful answers to my basic questions, mainly if not all on coding. Because of these I have been delving into php, javascript, css et al and have been enjoying this 'hobby'.
I also agree with Norodo - your posts scream depression, low self worth, focussing on your failings but not your good points and beating yourself up at any opportunity. Easy to type and difficult to do: talk to your GP who can arrange sessions with a counsellor on the NHS. It would be great to be the guy that says "hey Nao likes my coding and does all that anal micro-coding[1] for me", rather than saying "Nao changes my code, he must think I'm useless."
And don't worry about those who just want their software, don't even reply. Get yourself sorted and enjoy the rest of your life.

Off-topic / Re: Initial forecasts of Wedge installs/conversions
« on May 31st, 2013, 03:48 AM »Let's say, hypothetically, Wedge is uber successful and we need to escalate to a hardcore dedicated server, the cost of which is likely to run into the hundreds per month - that's not a cost we can sustain indefinitely ourselves.

Just an idea about a price. You could charge a small amount, say $10-20, 100% of which goes to charity[1]. Few would object to you asking for a donation after all the work done and the small amount will not reflect upon the quality of the product as it doesn't go to the 'business'. It would get rid of some of the troublemakers because (as you or Nao posted, and to paraphrase) any price however small puts off people who are useless and complain a lot. And the low amount would not make any expectation regarding the OOP-ness or whatever.
