! Updated version number across the source to 2.0 RC5, I don't think they were selective in what files were updated, don't see why I should be (Many many files, simple find/replace on 2.0 RC4 to 2.0 RC5)

I spent a little time recently looking at WP's admin panel and some of the funtionality that I never really looked before which I do have to wonder about, for those who come from WP.
For the majority of people coming from WP, the key things that they're most worried about are SEO, ease of posting/attaching files and add-ons - in that order. SEO we can do something with - and I do even wonder about full on 'SEO' URLs (i.e. no ids present in the URLs) for that, but that's something I'm not quite so worried about.
So, the features that jump out of me from WP:
* Posting from email (not sure *how* it does it but I get the impression it doesn't have any of the usual fuss related to posting via email that you can trivially find on sm.org, with email configuration - the admin panel talks about just using POP3, which means I think we're talking regular lookups to the POP3 server)
* XML-RPC - for creating other clients (it probably isn't a bad idea to have something suitable for this purpose)
* Threaded comments
* OMG OMG TEH LEET SEO

In that case, how about we get funky and make the recycled board 0 (since there's no technical reason I'm aware of that prevents it)? Or, failing that, 65535 and reset the board id back to 2 thereafter.Quote There is one reason to avoid it: it's possible to end up losing state and theoretically the original topic. We did this in SimpleDesk originally, had it working reasonably well but it ended up with the situation whereby deleting every post in a ticket would move to a new ticket but if you later reinstated the ticket there were consistency issues with the topic id being reinstated later, but I didn't write it and I don't remember what the issue was. I just remember spending a day staring at it, as we were approaching the deadline we'd set ourselves for release and I ended up ditching it entirely and rewriting from scratch to what you see now.
I don't know what you mean, but what I know is that I've never liked seeing several topics created when you delete several posts in a row from a same topic. Topic IDs are precious. Don't waste them. These posts should be integrated into the recycled topic all the same.

I'm going on the usability experience I found of doing it that way - and honestly I think more people relate to the concept of a recycle bin-as-board much better than trying to do it inline, or something else. Maybe we could make the usage of ids and so on a little more elegant but the general process seems pretty logical for users.

Hmm. I still have no better ideas on implementing this other than what I originally implemented.
I think I'm going to go ahead and implement as originally mentioned (i.e. a new install creates a recycle board by default), close this topic and then see if inspiration strikes.
I know Nao commented above, but I found it just didn't work in practice :( It just gets too unwieldy to keep managed and is the source of at least two bugs in SD 1.0 that were fixed post release.

I implemented the UI back into the original admin panel for now simply because I'm still trying to figure out where everything needs to go, so reverted the (minor) changes in code to keep parity with SVN for now. All my real work's on paper at the moment...
There was also a bug fix in the code that BB had to have, but I'd already fixed around it anyway (the test for allowing external forms needed tweaking but I'd already tweaked it to work properly)

That would require me figuring out how to use the plugin thingy, since WP doesn't like my server's configuration and can't log in with FTP since I don't have an FTP server (thus it can't change any permissions on files, and I really can't be arsed with the alternative)
I don't embed video often and when I do, I want it to just work, like it does with Aeva. Sod having to install a plugin - this is 2011, the software has been shown to be smart enough to deal with it!

Half-assed-requires-me-to-add-HTML-and-fiddle-it-not-to-remove-the-iframe embedding. Not really embedding at all. In fact it's a pain in the ass. Did I mention how much I *hate* WP?

In other news. Jesus Fucking Christ on a Crutch-powered-Motorbike. The hassle of posting an embed snippet into WP without it eating the iframe. (Yes, I'm pissed off, it took far more effort than it should have done. None of this magic autoembed there.)

Hahaha, well, lately been trying stuff out in the admin panel, playing with some ideas for enabling features from the same page (i.e. to cut off the whole concept of 'core features' from the start) but nothing I really *like* for that has come out.
Maybe when I've done some more tidying I'll give it another go with a fresh mind.
