One other thing I'll add.

(click to show/hide)
"Don't play games with me. Don't ever think you are capable of that." -- the Doctor.

Why am I getting spidey-sense tingles of an arc like the Seventh Doctor, that he isn't just this daft old mad man with a box, but in reality a slightly Machiavellian figure who doesn't play chess with pieces on a board, but with lives and destinies?

How odd, I never knew anyone actually forked it before...

So, let's recap what we do know.

S5, River tells the Doctor + Amy that she was in prison for killing a man. Father Octavian says the man was 'a good man, a hero to many'. Right now we're all supposed to be thinking the Doctor on that basis. The Doctor also asks River if he can trust her, and she replies, "If you like."

Spoilers all relate to S6E1 itself, so as not to put out anyone who hasn't seen that yet but I consider anything from S5 fair game.

River says that her and the Doctor are travelling in opposite directions, and one day she's going to meet him and he won't know who she is. We've seen this - it was Silence in the Library. The Doctor has yet to tell her his real name, I doubt Moffat will tell us, though!

The person shooting the Doctor is someone River knows, because when she tries to shoot the astronaut, it doesn't work and she realises why. The only way that can work is if she knows who it is. Presumably it can't be her as a child, because if it were, she'd remember it.

The new race, the Silents, intrigues me. Clearly they're manipulative, and can not only make you forget, they can also make you think things you weren't thinking before - and not just through fear.

They intrigue me more because the message from the previous season was that *Silence* will fall, not *The silence* will fall.

Both River and Amy felt sick after seeing the Silents and having their memory adjusted. But I think Amy saying she's pregnant is a misdirection. After all, "if I always told you the truth, I wouldn't need you to trust me."

Sure you're not meaning IceWeasel being a Firefox fork?

It's not just a minor change to SMF's code, it's MASSIVE change. No SMF mod will work now, not one mod can work without alterations, for example.

One question: are they developers? I don't think so. Never saw them commit a single line of code to the SVN.
Oldiesmann has contributed to SVN, mostly PostgreSQL fixes.

How do you expect SMF to play catch up in this situation?
I don't think it can. 2.0 is at least a month away. Then comes the long haul to decide what's in 2.1 and then to actually build it. Unless it's something relatively small, we're going to be talking about 6+ months before betas, so we're probably looking at a spring 2012 release for 2.1, which won't even be that exciting a release.

Well, I don't know how much time is involved finalising it now everyone's signed it but I would tend to agree that the release timeframe is no longer held up by legalities, primarily. Now it's a case of resolving - or 'accepting' - the bugs in 2.0 and fixing them.

I would expect a few more weeks minimum.

I have learned more here about the reason why we are waiting than I ever did on SMF.org just cannot understand why it has to be such a big secret there?
Well, there is a certain value to privacy, which the team understands - by cloaking it, they make themselves look less incompetent than I think others would argue they are.

There is also a value of honesty with your community, as I think people are beginning to realise: the more people are brushed off, the more people are going to just shrug and move on, on the logic that if no-one wants to admit there's a problem, there MUST be a problem.

I'm curious to see if/when 2.0 makes it out, and what will happen after since I've already told Kindred that I suspect a lot of people will be disappointed with 2.0 final, and why, and the only way to fix that is a 2.1 that adds things people really want - and I just can't see that happening.

That forum ~ board thing is always irritating. The ones call the whole thing board and then forums and others call it forum and have boards in it.
Yup. When we say forum, we mean the entire forum thing, and a board is one area where there are topics.

I think let it be a board is quite strange. I would make some administration option for that and wouldn't let it be a part of the boards
Well, it's technically natural since that's how it's physically stored.

Yeah, the current view is that what's there - making an existing SMF feature more prominent and turned on out of the box - isn't particularly ideal for a number of reasons, thus floating the idea of changing it and making it different and better. We're just not clear on how to make it better yet.

Well, yes, it's fully peer to peer by Cirrus 2... but it requires Flash. If that works for you...

Oh, I thought it only stored it if necessary :/ But yes, it is.

Parent id would be interesting but I don't see any practical application other than threading of posts which I'm really not sure about.

There are so many problems that can be made through such a third party hosting; you're entirely relying on that third party never to change their API, authentication mechanism and so on, and it's particularly vulnerable because you'd have to supply the third party credentials to the Javascript which would have to live in the page all the time to keep requesting from the third party. Plus I can't think of a single non chat service that this wouldn't violate the TOS of.

Well, it's still going to be via a server one way or another... unless you can figure out how to do peer to peer communication in a browser in JS (which doesn't work unless both sides are configured to receive HTTP requests)

The big factor is whether or not authentication is required for visibility. If it's not, there's a variety of things that might be suitable that can be just thrown in.

But if authentication is required, roundtrips to the server are inevitable.
