The most important thing is that they're representative and consistently used above all else.
Colour has two predominant factors to consider as far as we're concerned: usability and inference.
Usability because it's possible to have UI issues out of colour mismatches - not only pure legibility but I remember an issue that came up in Crimson Editor's development that had to be changed. Specifically, up until it got open sourced, you had tabs and a little lamp indicating whether the file had been saved or not since the last edit: red for unsaved changed, green for no changes since last save. Except that users with red/green colour blindness had real trouble differentiating them. (And R/G colour blindness is the most predominant form, more common in males, too)
Culture issues aren't a huge thing for us but it can be on some things. There was a really good UI overview document I found somewhere that explained it in a bit more depth.[1]
For example on page 43 it has an image that lists a pig, a US-style mailbox, the 'OK' gesture and a Red Cross logo, and goes on to say that the pig is likely offensive to multiple cultures, that US-style mailboxes are uncommon even unknown outside the US, the OK gesture is actually an offensive one in South America and the Red Cross logo is unfamiliar to many and that a cross has no significance to billions of people.[2]
More of interest is the table on page 44 listing different colours and their culture effects, that red for example is a warning colour in our perspective but that other colours see red as a colour of strength, anger or vibrancy. Interestingly the only colour that has positive connotations across the board is green.
Note that this doesn't mean we should change anything that we have, because for the users who will most likely use Wedge, they're in the Western Europe/US group, which generally means we have similar cultural connotations for colour (green = good, red = danger/bad, that sort of thing), but it is worth being aware of it, I find.

| 1. | http://www.cosc.brocku.ca/~bockusd/3p94/webui1.pdf has the full thing for now, it's well worth a read even though it looks like it's years out of date, because the principles it talks about are still true now. |

Your number convert function -- isn't he comma_format stuff going to kill performance if used on a larger scale...?
The biggest culprit is the board index but that ran comma_format anyway, so it's one function wrapper and an if+isset overhead on top per value per board on the board/message index (1 per redirect board, 2 per normal board), it'll be another 2 call+if+isset on the message index for the counts of views/replies, plus another for the view count inside a topic. The actual add-on load is really not worth being too concerned about, IMO.

@ARG, I wouldn't ask for posts to be deleted, simply that I no longer wish to have an account. I've been closing down things where I'd had dealings or debates with SMF team members where trying to argue about the things that are failing in that ecosystem. I think of it as a formal manner of closing the door on the past, so that I can move forward without any ties dragging me back.
Hopefully it will help discourage bringing more of the SMF drama here because frankly I'm fed up to the back teeth of every little thing that need not be a problem then being blown out of proportion by people who have demonstrated every possible way to fuck up a community of people who were happy to contribute their time and energy.
By not having an account at these places, I find myself not dragged in nearly so much to the crap and it doesn't weigh me down; I haven't written a line of PHP in days because I've had so much going on between RL and this crap.

I suspect the current state of play (i.e. censored) is how the team, for the most part, see it as resolved. Don't expect it to be restored (there's no edit history AFAIK), don't expect an apology. We have seen how these people work, and nothing will change unless you make it change because from their POV, it's done. Plus you know if you remove AeMe because of this, it'll be seen as *your* fault not theirs, because you'd be the one to remove it, so you're fucked either way.
This... this is why I'm so pissed off with things, because god forbid they should talk to us about it first or try and reach a compromise that's, well, satisfactory for both sides. And I find it hilarious how they have talked about trying to take the moral high ground in all of this - as though we're the ones at fault.
As for my leaving places, it's not just any one place in particular; I actively feel tainted pretty much everywhere, so I've removed my account from Bryan's site, closed my account as best as I am able on Meaningles, stated the situation as far as SD is concerned (I'm going to finish what I've started, which is one converter, the plugins that I've started so far, and issue the release build of SD itself) then remove my account there.
I'll leave my DzinerStudio account open because a couple of sites I look after use their themes and I'm really not up to porting the themes and the sites to Wedge for a while given how much stuff I wrote for them originally (which would in any case have to be rewritten for Wedge - and as much as I'm in favour of porting to Wedge ASAP, I have to be pragmatic about it; these sites aren't mine per se, I just look after them as and when they need it, and if it isn't broken they don't want it tampered with, plus SMF meets their needs admirably - it's not like they're even using AeMe.)

Nope, read the CLA again. The definition of contributed works extends to "documenting the works", i.e almost any post of sm.org can be claimed under that definition if it discusses any aspect of SMF, of using it or mods that work with it.

I was, only until they noticed, and subsequently I wasn't able to. The assumption is that you'd use the ability responsibly but that you cannot demand them to remove your posts because the CLA gives them the right to use them.

You know as well as I do that once you signed the CLA you no longer had the right to remove your own posts as I proved a short while ago.
Best decision I ever made was removing my account for a second time. In hindsight I shouldn't even have bothered setting up that account because it hasn't brought me anything but hassle.

Features / Re: replace jwplayer with videojs for local videos
« on July 30th, 2011, 01:36 PM »
It isn't as simple as that. Even if the HTML 5 tags are used, there's no guarantee the video or audio is available in a format that is suitable.
Not all browsers support H.264 out of the box, nor do all of them support Web-M, which means you potentially have to include Flash playing as a fallback. Besides, one of the perks of JWPlayer is the graphic equaliser which cannot be realised in HTML 5.

Given a joust I've just had with LexArma, I think it's fair to infer that the team did indeed edit the page.
Honestly, though, did you really expect any better from them?

Well, only those with customisation approval access, and admins, can modify that page.
I wonder if there's now going to be claims that you did it...

Off-topic / IE users are dumb
« on July 29th, 2011, 11:44 PM »
No, that's not just some rhetoric from me about IE users being too dumb to use a better browser.
Apparently a study has been done, as reported in http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/29/aptiquant_iq_survey/ showing that the average IQ of IE users is lower than those of other browsers.
Nao, take note: the Opera users, on average, have the highest IQ!

The one comment I would point out is about themes; while they will need work in porting, if we kept total compatibility with SMF themes, we'd be limiting ourselves in what we could make Wedge capable of. Consequently we took the decision early on not to worry about compatibility with SMF code to free us from dancing round trying to keep compatibility and still pushing boundaries at the same time.
