Off-topic / Re: The Evolution & Death of Social Subscription
« on August 30th, 2011, 11:25 PM »
A lot of people still use email because it's what's comfortable for them; I haven't used email subscriptions for new topics on any news/forum in years, just for sites that work with announcements when there is something occasionally new to notify me.
It isn't going away anytime soon, but I see its use dwindling as the old core of users fade out and are replaced with the newer tech-aware users, for whom Twitter, FB and RSS are commonplace.
RSS isn't going away any time soon though, it's too useful.
To answer the question, we have actually discussed it before, on the merits and problems of handing authentication in RSS, and we concluded that it poses a security risk.

Yup, both variables are defined, both in scope, both what they should be, but apparently one doesn't appear to be accessible.

OK, so in the setup I've been working on, there's a Addons/ folder in the same place where Sources and Themes are, and there's a global variable called $addonsdir that maintains its path. So far, so good.
Said variable is populated on install, editable in admin, but even though it exists and has content, is_dir returns false, as does opendir.
Were this a Linux host, I'd assume chmod was at fault, but it's on my PC, via WampServer. Anyone got any ideas WTF is wrong?

It's not really business oriented, but user oriented. That said, I too would be surprised. If I get time (hahahaha), I'll take a look because I'm curious now.

No, they had to put special code in because my code conflicted with theirs.
Because of the operations being done and the way they were done, they were added very early in the process, running from Load.php - but this conflicted with how Tapatalk works.

« on August 30th, 2011, 09:09 AM »Branding doesn't appeal to me nearly as much as if I could purchase a bunch of licenses for smart phone apps that could interface with the help desk that I run. Then I'd resell those licenses to my clients at a small profit, or even at a loss. I'd recoup that money by selling access to the help desk, and you'd get your cut from the App Store.
(Being a registered developer hasn't meant that I've looked into distribution yet, I've made use of the facility by having access to the SDK and being able to run stuff directly on my iPad, but that's it thus far)
I don't know about writing one I just thought maybe making wedge comparable or listed with TapaTalk so admins have that option to use it. As I say from a user point of view I now only use it for testing

That still doesn't solve the mindnumbing headache that people wanting to create their own branded edition still have to have Apple developer accounts, though.
I have one of those, because I paid for the privilege - and on the other hand I have no intention of learning Java to write anything for Android... which says to me it may not be the best approach all round.

Other software / Re: Fork discussion at SMF

At the same time, it's frightfully naive.
The assumption, like so many 'bleeding the parent dry' debates[1], is that all the fork people would suddenly work together on SMF core.
There was a time when both of us would gladly have said yes to working on SMF's core as devs, no messing about with politics or BS. You can probably guess what our thoughts were at the time, too, when this was made known to the team.[2]
That said, I've long suspected that post-2.0, Nao and I would have been stifled with the conservative mindset SMF has. Don't get me wrong, conservative isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't necessarily a good one either.

| 1. | Online piracy is, of course, the standard one, with the naive assumption that pirates would automatically become full paying customers. Er, no. |
| 2. | Like SMF 2.0 would have been out a lot sooner, and with fewer bugs left in it. |

I'm not 100% sure about the removal of admin confirmation though... Not that I don't get your point -- but I can see people complaining the option is no longer there, and having to tell them to use phpMyAdmin to change it...

! Removed the 'disable administration security' user interface option. The internal setting has been preserved so it's not like it can't be set relatively easily with phpMyAdmin if needed. While this may be a slight inconvenience to long-experienced users who create test sites, for the majority of users it's one thing they can't accidentally shoot themselves in the foot with. ! Removal of the 'number of people in memberlist' option. I've never seen anyone change the default, but if someone really wants to, it's still in the database as a setting so it can be tweaked with a mod if necessary. (In theory it could be removed from the DB, simply because it is pre-initialised to default otherwise) (ManageSettings.php, ManageSettings language file)

Because all of the people who have the skills to work on forks are the sorts of people that would otherwise have been core dev candidates. The theory is reasonable: Nao was halfway onto the dev team, I was considered for the dev team, Bloc was part of the dev team at one time, I suspect the other fork person to have been former team, and likely former dev team.
I like how it's a subtle dig, as though the team could do no wrong, as though all of the fuckwittery that occurred was our fault.
