Off-topic / Re: Initial forecasts of Wedge installs/conversions

@Boko: To an extent the two are surprisingly similar. When it comes out in the wash, pretty much anything you see here will be available. The only time it's going to be any different is when we get to having a download system and a mod site which will be run by us and may or may not be available depending on how we do it.
@xrunner: It has happened that we've offered useful information back to them in the past and got it linked to here, e.g. I seem to recall debates about SMF development, when we'd already done it... hell, I posted a few requests for features with screenshots of what I'd already done ;)

@xrunner: The only real question is who plays Jules and who plays Vincent. I think I'd be quite a good Jules (other than the fact that I'm just not anywhere near as awesome as Samuel L. Jackson), though whether @Nao would like being John Travolta is another matter entirely
Officially, linking here from That Other Place is still officially verboten, but if there's a useful post here, then it's worth linking ;)
I actually expect things to turn a bit funny... Warning, naughty words ahead. But if you get where this is going already, you'll know exactly what to expect ;)

@Boko: You can always contribute them now if you like... that's why we deliberately run Wedge either directly from SVN or only a day or so's revisions behind, so that as it evolves, we can show you and involve you in the process of doing so.

Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration? I didn't mean to do that. Please, continue. You were sayin' something about "best intentions"? *silence* What's the matter? Oh, y-you were finished? Oh, well, allow me to retort. What does your bug look like?
What?
What country are you from?
What?
"What" ain't no country I ever heard of! They speak English in "What"?!
What?
English, motherfucker, do you speak it?!
Yes.
Then you know what I'm saying.
Yes.
Describe what your bug looks like.
What?
Say "what" again. SAY WHAT AGAIN. I dare you, I double dare you, motherfucker, say what one more goddamn time!

Honestly? No.
The initial support is likely to be full of whiners complaining though -_- about people who expect it to be perfect and not beta when it first emerges (since of course we can't test it as thoroughly as we'd like ourselves, just because we're only human.

Well... SMF and Wedge both offer the ability to cap signature images to a reasonable size, and both offer users the ability to opt out of seeing signatures if they so choose.
Note that Wedge infractions can even handle the case of a user with an annoying signature and you can remove it from them as part of the warning ;)

Hmm, I know we did some stuff to the parser but I have a recollection that SMF does the same sort of thing too.

The problem with Vanilla is that I already think it's unintuitive. The use case is primarily around having a single board and only a single board (niche forums, yo) and having meta-data to indicate the context of the topics, e.g. what amount to tags and topic prefixes. You end up with tags that categorise topics, and tags to classify topics, subtle but different. It's much like how you can put a blog article in multiple categories in WP but give each article its own set of tags as well.
In SMF/Wedge terms, their overall categorisation would be to our boards, with tags per topic as well, and then just show everything as if it were in one board sort of making the whole thing pointless. Though you can get per-board listings too.
Designwise, the key word is minimalism. The categorisation is primarily about giving some taxonomy to topics while everything else is just about shoving the content at you with as little fluff as possible. This, depending on your perspective, may be a bad thing.

Yeah, bbcode editor is on the todo list for Wedge, only making use of the power SMF gave it originally ;)

Archived fixes / Updated CSS code is buggy
« on May 30th, 2013, 12:38 AM »
I don't know where exactly, but it is.
Just for shits'n'giggles I thought I'd install Wedge on 000webhost, to see if the 'white screen of lying-about-memory' came up. So I'm installing SVN, updated with latest changes plus a few in my local repo but that are absolutely unrelated[1] and I get all kinds of excitement when wading through the install process.
These will produce a couple of thousand errors per regeneration of the CSS.

I dunno what's wrong with it since it works fine locally with the same files.

« on May 30th, 2013, 12:34 AM »It's easy to modify without changing underlying code
I prefer it to SMF because there are less strange things like UTF breaking database backups
less code editing needed for plugins in general
Search works wonders in the adminCP too.

SMF does not have it as a permission. Wedge does, it also has the option whereby signatures are not shown to everyone until you have x posts (e.g. minimum 10 posts to show to everyone, but moderators/admins can see it)
Out of curiosity, I looked it up when I added the permission. r151, 26 Sep 2010... Wedge was so young then!

So as you guys know, I've done 'System Visitations' where I glance around each of the different forum systems that I have licenses for (or are open source) for commentary purposes, seeing what they do, whether they have features we don't, that kind of thing.
I asked this on the thoughts and got a few mixed responses. So I thought I'd make it a poll. We don't have enough polls on this site. NEED MOAR POLLS.
Previously on System Visitations:
MyBB 1.6.10
vBulletin 3.8.7
IPB 3.4.5 (plus the rest of the suite)

The bad behavior mode is not good, in my country, the ISPs are sharing ip address and rotating it among millions of users. If Tony uses IP address 20.201.237.20 in spam software like xrummer.
Millions of people who will use IP address 20.201.237.20 will be blocked. Thanks why auto anti spam blocker is always a bad idea.
Another reason why I like Mybb is the ability to edit the template files in the admin panel
and the shortcodes are so easy to work on.
