Features / Re: Moving topics, you can now send a PM
« on April 26th, 2012, 07:07 PM »
Eh, so I should, but for me it was such a small thing that I didn't want to blow the trumpet on it. That said, I've been thinking about implementing the notifications system as mentioned here (the Facebook/XenForo one) and that would certainly be a case for promoting it!

Archived fixes / Re: Drafts being saved is not shown in QR

Yes, yes it is broken. It's not broken when starting a new topic, only in quick reply.
I'll investigate shortly.

The Pub / Re: The Cookie Law (in the UK at least)

That's actually about the only thing that will have to be run for guests per page rather than per session; the mod cache is not needing to be populated at all, for example.
In fact, if we look at what is cached in session for guests, it's actually very little and nothing that's hideously expensive (since guests can't do a lot really)

Archived fixes / Re: Buffer hook never called

I would have been more open about things if I were going to quit. I just needed to take some time out and find what it was that I loved about working on Wedge, and I have found that again, just slowly.
Certainly that's a sign that more documentation is needed, too.

Well, all new devices are running 5.x for one thing, and almost everything that's currently on the market (and going back a version or two) can run 5.x, so there's little reason for it - I mean, it's the likes of the iPhone 3GS that might not be able to do so, and even that I'm not sure about, maybe it can. Certainly the 2010 (first gen) iPad can do so, as can the iPhone 4, and there's been at least one iteration on both of those since.
I don't know what you'll save or lose if you reset, but you could always back it up first?

Archived fixes / Re: (SMF bug) Admin registering a user, email does not send a link to the forum
« on April 26th, 2012, 06:56 PM »
The bug is that if you create a user from the admin panel, you can email them their user name and password - but it won't actually tell them where the forum is.
The fix is documented: replace the first bit of code with the second in the email template.
I didn't apply it last night because I had other stuff going on and forgot to add it into the other commit I did.

Plugins / Re: Plugins I refuse to do
« on April 26th, 2012, 06:54 PM »
The lawsuit is still ongoing, and it's really been weighing on Kier lately, but I still think they're going to win in the end.
I think I will implement both multiple answers and auto-generated questions to kick off with.

Bug reports / Re: Pretty URL remarks
« on April 26th, 2012, 06:53 PM »When you're running a forum, you don't always think of updating it... I personally rarely do, either.
I think we should write some kind of 'automatic updater' for plugins and Wedge, disabled by default or something, with the ability to install only the 'proven' updates of Wedge (or maybe also cutting edge versions?), something like that... We could simply retrieve the gzip file, extract it somewhere, and copy the tree structure...
Notifying users is good. Making it one-click is a VERY BAD IDEA. It's right up there with shitty plugins as why people get hacked.
As cool as it might be, the nightmare of doing it is enough to put me off doing it. Other systems do not have auto updating tangles, I don't entirely see why we should, especially since it's more likely to fuck you about than not.

I added the length of time feature months ago heh, based partly on my old mod for SMF, though much more cleanly implemented now there is a subsystem for handling one off tasks in the future.

Well, the problem is that {LINK} is actually a proper link, rather than a bare URL, so that it might look out of place even in a URL.
Perhaps if {LINK} were done in brackets or something so that it still delineates that it's separate? It's in SVN, try different styles to see what works. I did want to intentionally make it slightly less formal, seeing how it's actually sent as a PM from the person rather than from the site.

Idle thought, seeing that we have wedge.org/board/board/topic_id, what would happen if one created a board whose URL slug was a number?

Well, that's a separate subject anyway, and having such a notifications system like in Facebook or XenForo is certainly something we've talked about, but as an interim step, having it implemented as PMs does actually make it easier to migrate to a central notifications system later.
Either way, this is something that does notify the topic starter that their topic has had something done to it, something that I felt had been lacking for a while.

This does also make me think that other actions should receive similar notifications, e.g. when a message has been approved from moderation. Thoughts?

Features / Moving topics, you can now send a PM
« on April 25th, 2012, 11:56 PM »
I know it's been a bugbear of mine for a while that users weren't notified when their topics were moved.
Now they are, potentially.
And yes, as per my commit note in r1563, the message is a bit sucky but it makes the point well enough :)

! When moving a topic between boards, you can now also opt to send the topic starter a PM. It's not a particularly nice boilerplate wording but I haven't got anything better. It does also use a slight variation on the moved notice, in that it actually injects a link to the topic with the subject in it, rather than injecting the bare URL. (Currently uses an iurl as per the moved topic notice, but that's easily changeable.) (MoveTopic.php, MoveTopic.template.php, Errors and ManageTopics language files)
