Other software / Re: More thoughts on SMF 2.1
« on August 25th, 2012, 01:07 AM »Well, right now I'm wondering if the relative success of Wuthering in the poll could be due to my using Segoe UI in it..?
Maybe if I changed it to Arial and I set Segoe UI here, we'd see a vote reversal immediately.
It's actually linked from a piece about MS' new logo which is as you mention, Segoe UI with 4 solid boxes. Even I can do better than that.
I like that new logo, is pretty neat :)

« on August 25th, 2012, 01:05 AM »Arantor I seem to remember a few of them where the user was basically saying you didn't know how the program worked when you tried to help them.
I really don't blame developers for getting disgusted and giving up on people after experiences like that.
French I don't mind popping up. I can sometimes remember enough to figure out what it means.
Side note. Nao all the mentioning of Garlic sausages has to be some kind of psych war ops. I miss small stuff like that here in the land of plastic food.

« on August 25th, 2012, 01:03 AM »I didn't know. That's a cool feature.
Just a bit pity that the looks of the menu change.
It disappears when crossing the space between tab en dropdown. Only when being very fast it works.
I hope it's a bit clear what I mean.
For me the menus on the right hand side are awkward. But I'm left handed so that may play a big part in that.

I have to admit I rarely saw crashes under 4.3 but 5.0's Safari crashes regularly on my iPad 1 because of the limits of physical memory. Every time it does crash it's always with an out-of-memory error. Every. Damn. Time. (Yes, I go looking for that sort of thing.)
Other browsers have exactly the same problem.

« on August 25th, 2012, 12:36 AM »- Range can even be country-based...
Since most spammers are from a different country than the 'expected one', it could be an okay solution. After all, do you know of many people who would move to another continent while their session is opened..?
Thing is, you tend to go a bit much these days for what seems to have become your favorite Wargames quote
You do remember what happened with SMF Hacks, right? Where he put a ban on my IP address and ended up losing so many legitimate customers because of it?
I even contemplated actually removing any kind of IP address tracking from Wedge at one point, only to realise that people would expect it to be there and no matter how much I shouted that it doesn't work, people wouldn't listen. There are a precious few cases where it does work (i.e. whitelisting for search engines against known IP address blocks) but for anything else it simply should not be used.
Where we are with it is about the best we can realistically be, because while I'm all for keeping things secure, I'm not going to make it more secure for some and generate MASSES of bug reports for 'it doesn't work'. Because I can't in good conscience turn around and say it's by design, when all it's demonstrating is how the design is wrong.
The ONLY way I'd support it is if it were implemented as an option but not allow it in the actual admin panel itself. That way only the people who actually understood the implications would be able to turn it on in the first place.

« on August 24th, 2012, 11:48 PM »I don't like the sidemenu on the left so those skins are a no go for me.
I was hoping for a more polished assortment of themes that do justice to the Wedge brand
Now theres an idea?
New software, particularly WEDGE should = A new overall look that differentiates significantly from other forums in general.
There are always going to be individual cases where very big customisations are appropriate. But for the majority of forums, the standard forum structure works extremely well.
A fresh bold new look that definitely stands out from the rest. Something that truely signifies the new era in forum software that Wedge is attempting to convey?..Yes?
1. How much screaming and carrying on goes on every single time Facebook implements a major change to their UI? Why do you suppose this is?
2. As a sort of corollary to the answer to the above question, something that is a long way departed from the conventional forum structure is actually going to confuse people, leading to a feeling of detachment, ostricisation, and any headway made out of doing something different is lost.
It doesn't matter how different it is, if no-one wants to use it because no-one understands it. Why do you think so many people want to emulate the layouts of other software?

« on August 24th, 2012, 10:39 PM »I'll admit I am bad about trying the do not do stuff just to see what happens.
But I do it on a spare computer here at the house. Not on a production server.
Some of the stuff I read on support forums saddens me for the future of the human race.
Mine wasn't quite that bad, or simple, but I still had to crawl away and die somewhere! lol (It was a steep learning curve which has now been learnt!
(Can I just say that a lot of the smilies come up in French when hovering)

Note that both Nao and I get full of wrath not because of simple questions. It's never just because of a simple question.
The usual cause is when it's a simple question that has already been answered and no effort has been put in ahead of asking, e.g. it's in the FAQ, or a simple search will definitely find it. Or, worst of all, you've managed to ignore the 18pt high, bold, bright red letters and still proceed to carry out the operation, and are then surprised (or even full of self-righteous wrath) when it doesn't work as expected.

I actually like all of them, it's almost mood dependent, but I tend to stick with Weaving because it's the default theme and I'm most used to it.

« on August 24th, 2012, 07:42 PM »- We don't give a damn about guests having their PHPSESSID stolen, of course.
- Can you quote a single case where someone would change their IP all of a sudden while browsing? It would definitely disrupt more than one site...
- How 'bout accepting an IP change in the same range?
- And if we provide this as an option, disabled by default, it's a win-win situation...

Because you'll have users whose IP changes pretty much every request. Which means every other page they see will be a password confirmation one... yay.
Then you'll get complaints of 'it's not remembering my password', which means people will be throwing bugs left and right when it's working entirely as designed, but that doesn't mean it's the *right* design.

Even the free version of Aeva can deal with uploading and serving of files...

Hosting on a different server basically means you couldn't really handle approval unless they had the relevant upload details. It would just be easiest to use Aeva Media.

Using IP binding might stop 99% of session hijacks. It also just happens to screw up a significant proportion of legitimate users too, enough that you don't want to have to deal with the 'it's broken' support reports.

Off-topic / Re: Doctor Who
« on August 23rd, 2012, 04:19 PM »That reminds me, I really need to watch The Christmas Invasion one day (as well as 2x01), and re-watch the Fireplace episode which I don't remember much about...
Don't know a thing about the old Who episodes (I really only watched 5 minutes of Genesis of the Daleks and City of Death, and have yet to find the motivation to go beyond these appalling minutes, sorry about that...), so I'll just keep my mouth shut about the characters
Genesis of the Daleks is quite a long story (6 episodes), but Pyramids of Mars is 4 episodes, and has interesting stuff going on pretty early. The downside to the 6-serial stories is that they're generally stretched out to fit.
These days I've been watching Joking Around, which is the last remaining Moffat show I had to watch (loved Sherlock, Who and Coupling, and after J/A, well, can't find anything, let alone with English subtitles...)
