@Pete> There's an x86 version of Android, which can be used to install it on a computer (there's a website dedicated to that, can't remember the URL.) It can also be run in a VM, and it's faster than the stock Windows Android emulator. (Although Intel now ships special drivers for that emulator that make it way, way faster... Actually twice faster than a S3 or something.)
*shrug* There's also an x86 version of iOS - it's how the Simulator works in Xcode. But it's still mostly irrelevant given that this latest article was nothing to do with Android or iOS and solely about removing optical drives from the laptop and bigger devices.

To me it looks like the article is biased and one sided to Apple.
It's an Apple site, what did you expect?

Anybody running a Android with a optical drive?
Android runs on the desktop now? The article from a few posts up is about iMacs etc. no longer having optical drives. But hey, if you want a mobile device with a DVD drive in it, I'm sure Android could probably oblige. Other than portable DVD players, which are outdated these days...

Is that only optical, how about spinning hard disk, are they using solid state?
Yes, it is only optical that is being phased out. The smaller laptops are all using solid state, the bigger ones have a choice between spinning disk and solid state, based on the fact that spinning disks are cheaper for higher capacities (like the fact I could have gotten a 1TB hard drive in this laptop for less than the price of the 256GB SSD)

Android compact devices that run on full screen with keyboards and mice have been out for a while already and cost allot less than that junk Apple is forcing down to its fanboys.
Except that the devices above are not competing with Android, but run OS X so a proper comparison with Windows would be the order of the day, but don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

All they want to do is sell you overpriced junk and tell you how to use it.
That's why I'm sat here using my MacBook Pro running Windows 7 (for which Apple was only too happy to provide me with all the drivers), but again don't get the facts get in the way of a good rant. Or the fact that Macs (which this article is about) aren't nearly as locked down.

I wonder, did you complain when the previous generations of Mac got rid of their floppy drive?

Features: Security / Re: Bad Behavior

Heh, I can imagine.

But there are other neat tools that you can use, actually. We have the moderation filters system, which lets you moderate or even simply reject posts that contain certain words, and be selective about it.

To take your example, let us suppose that we have a drug called Unobtainium that is a doping agent. You can moderate any post that contains it, prevent any post that contains it, or you can limit it so that the post will be moderated or refused if the user has less than 10 posts, or is only in certain boards, or is posted by a non administrator. It's *very* flexible like that. ;)

You do know that we've been running Wedge here for 6 months, right? ;)

I'm pretty sure I documented everything anyway, but nevertheless...

Bad Behaviour is integrated - tightly, it's not the same as you see on the Bad Behaviour site and for several reasons (it runs later in the process so things like translations are available, amongst other things), and that it's actually faster than the main BB implementation as far as I can tell but the speed difference is tiny.

There is a new CAPTCHA in Wedge, which has all new styles and just for good measure also has animated CAPTCHAs (yes, they're carefully written so as not to cause trouble with epilepsy, no, they haven't been broken in an automated fashion yet but it is pretty much inevitable), but the main line of defence is what it has been in SMF for years: admins writing *good* questions in the Q&A. Though Wedge's setup is stronger because it allows for multiple language questions with multiple options of answer per question.

There are a few other tricks of the trade added too, certain places have time gates (if the form is submitted too quickly, for example), other places have a few other tricks I don't really want to talk about without giving things away, but the spam rate here is pretty low - and there's nothing like Stop Spammer added here.

Not that I put any faith in Stop Spammer, which uses the SFS database which is still way too easy to get blacklisted accidentally in.

Archived fixes / Re: Add plugin doesn't work
« on October 29th, 2012, 03:02 PM »
It's not UI at all. It's fundamental security issues that I'm talking about... The UI that is needed is only marginally more than what is there. But I WILL NOT release a version that is insecure by design. I'd rather remove the 'add plugin' stuff and make it so people have to use FTP themselves than crank some half assed solution.

@Powerbob: You can unpack them and upload them to the Plugins folder in Wedge. That's one of the truly great things - uploading a plugin will make it available immediately and since no file changes can occur, that's all that's needed to get it there, then it's just a case of clicking the button to enable it. Disabling, generally, should work the same way, you can just remove or rename the folder to disable it (though, depending on what it does, that is not necessarily ideal)

Archived fixes / Add plugin doesn't work

Sort of putting this in right here, right now.

None of the add plugin stuff works, mostly because I haven't figured out a way that doesn't suck that works without being insecure for uploading plugins.

I can't vouch for people I don't know and/or haven't worked alongside before now...

The dropping of the optical media was not a surprise, and should not have been one anyway - as soon as we saw OS X being distributed electronically (both download and USB), it should have been clear that Apple was not likely to continue shipping stuff on physical media.

I'm pretty sure I know who icari is, I suspect I have an as-yet-unreplied to PM on another forum about this (mostly because I haven't had time to sit and write a proper reply) and if it is who I think it is, yes, I would be willing to vouch. :)

Now I'm *REALLY* confused. The settings are all exactly as they were 12 hours ago but now it's working properly.

Nao: is the server in Paris? If it is not in Paris, update the server timezone to where it actually is please.

Scratch that, don't change it. I just have no idea how to fix this right now. Bah.

Features / Re: The calendar
« on October 27th, 2012, 07:36 PM »
Actually I disagree with you, it's actually more likely to be the other way around based on the time I spent doing SMF support.

The calendar is a plugin, it currently does not work properly.

Because when you're doing it from boards, you're doing groups, which is a single dimensional list (though even as it stands it might not always fit properly side by side!)

But when you're doing it from groups, you have to cope with a list that has nested items of arbitrary depth - and still fit in 3 columns per row - and then do the whole thing twice.

Then, remember that I rewrote group access, the boards UI uses the newer stuff, the groups/board access uses the older stuff.
