Oh, I have a vB licence. vB 5... consider for a moment that an exploit allowing access to the admin panel was found inside 24 hours after 'gold' release.

If I'm on the right page and you talking removing the dropdown fro the menu, I'm all for that and just having a search field would be much cleaner and less cramming of the menu items. How a bout mouse over drop down from the search button (quick or advanced) or would be an even bigger mess?
I'm talking about removing the ENTIRE MENU COMPLETELY.

We already HAVE a search field, every page. Let's use it as such.

I for one welcome the bar being raised by there being two decent paid forums out there ;)

OK, so I was talking to Asgard yesterday and he commented about how the search redundancy in SMF always annoyed him, hence the haiku-esque thought yesterday.

His complaint is that we have a search form every page, and we have a search button, why do we need both? Either drop the quick search, or drop the menu item, and be done with it.

And I thought about this, and I thought some more. Then I had some tea and all other arguments are invalid :D

OK, here's what I want to do.
1. Drop the search menu entirely, there's no need for it including all its fun markup.

2. Add a link to the full search page from just under the search form. This isn't duplication. This means when you want to do things the quick search can't do, you can still get to it.

3. Drop the distinction between simple and advanced searching and just have it push to the 'advanced' page and be done with it.

The result is simpler, cleaner functionality without multiple places on the page being duplicated.

Yup, I've been following the trial in recent times, it's been interesting, especially with the promotion of vB 5 to gold status (though note they haven't actually called it *gold* at any point, just 5.0.0, officially supported)

! This isn't finished but I'm fed up of having it on my local copy uncommitted. This is, then, the first part of the new language editor, except doesn't have the editory saving bit. There's also no way to delete languages at present but I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with that yet, I may just have it as being 'selectable' and 'nonselectable' and admins that really are bothered by such can delete the files themselves. Also note the search function doesn't work yet either. (ManageLanguages.php, ManageLanguages.template.php, Admin.template.php, ManageSettings language file)

This is related to the new flexbox code that's present. Oddly enough it works perfectly in Chrome - I've not seen a single bug today.

I should note I feel a lot more defensive about this feature today in particular having spent a couple of hours today replacing the fonts used by the image CAPTCHA due to licensing concerns.[1] And having to spend time cleaning up someone else's mess always puts me in a foul mood. >:(
 1. As documented on sm.org, I cannot find anything to suggest any fork, or SMF itself for that matter, actually has the right to use the bundled fonts.

! Adding new CAPTCHA font. It only has the basic alphabet in it so it's *very* small for the base package. I might add more fonts yet, hence the name. (wecaptcha1.ttf, captcha-*.php)
! The old Larabie font is no longer used, and so it can disappear too. (Screenge.ttf)

! Use the correct string, it's not_applicable rather than na. (ManagePlugins.php)
! We don't use these fonts and even if we did, I'm not sure what the licensing terms are for them anyway - not even SMF knows whether they can redistribute the fonts under BSD licence. What's left is all we use and it may well be replaced pretty shortly anyway, I'm already experimenting with new fonts. (*.gdf, *.ttf)

Firstly, other software has KeyCAPTCHA built in. Secondly, I don't like involving third parties in anything. Thirdly, it's so nice to feel like my work is appreciated.

Other software / Re: Will Wedge import data from SMF?
« on February 27th, 2013, 08:18 PM »
There are a number of nasty consequences that result out of the file editing - aside from stability with mod upgrades, the amount of support requests involving botched mod installations, as well as almost every 'I've been hacked' help request is a result of conditions arising out of the package manager.

However, even that's not really my issue. There is a larger issue at stake that some of those in the 'inner circle' are discouraging changes to these facilities and not really encouraging new blood to adopt better practices. All the time there are file edits, people are going to take them because they're easier. There is a very large culture of it being what the old guard want.
