User menu
« on May 7th, 2011, 01:01 PM »
Feature: User menu
Developer: Nao (main), Arantor (original code)
Target: users
Status: 99% (believed to be complete; need to review what should be in the menu and what shouldn't.)
Comment:

Stop with the waste of screen estate! We gathered user links under a menu that pops up with a nice animation when you hover a user name in topic pages. Just move the mouse out of that area to close the popup. Wait until you see it in action -- we're sure you'll love it.

User links as in, the Search, Profile, Inbox, etc? Will that be optional? And can we get a screenshot? ;D

They are links below the users on topic view like in vB.

Hmm yeah I guess a screenshot of the menu can be done. Just the menu though! I'll do it tomorrow I'd no one does it before. Busy here.

A few notes:
- Titles are in French because I installed the demo site in French. (This was an oversight...)
- Menu opens with a subtle animation.
- The frame around the menu has some transparency, hence some icons can be visible behind it. Some people find it too light, I like it, but it's not set in stone yet.
- I'm considering adding icons next to the links.
- The link list is not set in stone either. We may add or remove some links in the future.

Basically, the idea is to have in the menu every possible action you could have related to the author. The "Report to moderator" link falls into this definition, although it's actually related to the message itself. But it's unlikely you'd report someone on a message interface if it wasn't related to that message...

Oh I see! Sexy stuff and funcional. Just how I like it. And I quite like it that way, no need to overclutter it with icons! Text does the job well :)

Done. :)
That looks great! I planned to release some similar stuff I wrote as an SMF Mod (though it was styled a bit differently to fit in better with Curve itself, and it would have gotten rid of non-messaging icons) but never got around to packaging it up between RC5 and final with all of the "Soon, really soon... OK, we mean it this time." stuff. :P

@RvG> Hasa Diga!

@Roz> I don't know! Icons, and their absence thereof, are an important element in usability testings. For instance, Opera released a new version of their browser where the menu icon set is changed to a monochrome set. They say it's the result of the work from their USABILITY team. The first thing I thought when seeing it was, "what the hell? Monochrome? I can't even recognize them from each other! Tell me about usability!"

Hopefully they'll come back to their earlier set. Anyway... See what I mean.
