Off-topic / Forum Rules
« on May 16th, 2013, 01:27 AM »
Do you bother writing a lot of rules for your forum? Considering, in my experience, most members don't read them until it's too late, I wonder sometimes if it's worth it. I have a fairly long rules write up (I'll post it here if you want to critique it or steal parts of it) I've had for years. I used a "party" analogy which seems to fit the bill at my place.
If you've written rules, did you do it on your own or did you borrow parts from other forums?

Features / Re: Permissions UI, latest experiment
« on May 15th, 2013, 02:25 AM »In smf2 you have to enable deny permissions to see it.
Use with care, a denied permission will stay denied no matter what other membergroups the member is in.
Every time I see a software message that begins with "Use with care ..." it scares the shit out of me. :)
Thanks for the information though.

Features / Re: Permissions UI, latest experiment
« on May 15th, 2013, 02:19 AM »Based on smf2 (i sure its the same in smf1 but i never usd it)
Allow grants the permission based on a membergroup
Disallow does not grant the permission
* If however a user is in a group that allows the permission and also in a group that disallows the permission, the permission will be granted via the group that allows it.
If a permission is denied to a group the user is in the permission will be explicitly not granted even if the user is in another group that allows the permission
Thanks for your reply, and I read it several times before I was sure I understood it. I do understand what you are saying, but you also said "Based on smf2 ..."
I looked at the permissions (I've looked at them and set them for years but looked again) and I do not see "allow" "disallow" and "deny" in the permissions or any implication that they act like you are describing. All I see is a check box that is either checked or not checked for the permissions. Is there some underlying scheme I've never understood all these years that I need to be aware of, or are we just talking on two completely different levels (me being on the lowest level I'd guess :)).
Thanks.

« on May 15th, 2013, 01:01 AM »Well, I really like the clean looks of it. Personally, I rather liked SMF 1.0's three-way permission system (that is, deny, allow, disallow) in that it was quite intuitive to a programmer. That is, for each permission there was a value on screen. If course, taking 'disallow' out of the picture made the interface more intuitive to every user by just using a checkbox instead (since its value is now just binary).

I guess I'm bored, so I downloaded the new files and installed in in a new directory to see what happens - yes, I confirm (as if my confirmation was needed :))it now does not install.

The Pub / Re: I am asking my users for ideas
« on May 14th, 2013, 01:30 AM »The half-assed solution would of course be to just lock the topic with a note that it will be reopened shortly, and just leave the tab open in your browser.
Smells like plugin material to me, but that's no big deal either.

OK brainstorming ... here's something I've actually wanted in the past - a timer control for a board.
For example, I'd want to set a timer for posting access (not read access). I might want to allow posts only between certain hours of the day - say beginning when I get up and off when I go to bed.
Why would I use such a thing? If I have a certain hot debate going on my forum, I want to allow posts only when I (or my Mods) can monitor it and control things. When I go to bed I don't want any chance of a flame war, so I'd want it to automatically disallow posts (but allow reading) between certain hours. I want it programmed so that there is no chance of me forgetting about it.
That is my idea for today. :)

I installed 2.1 Alpha as a spam test site here OK -
Spamhaven
By the way Arantor - I'm getting some actual spammer posts now, they even post on the correct board! :+1:

In the future, I imagine this will be the support forum for Wedge.
In that future, I'm pretty sure I'll be hanging around here, trying to learn from some level, and help from another.
In that future, it's possible I might ask a new user about a small concern they have, about a space, or some other item.
Why, for example, they might think it's a problem, just for understanding.
Just letting you all know in case you want to start setting up penalties ... :)

Archived fixes / Re: Multiple Same-Name Selection Box When Notifying
« on May 11th, 2013, 01:28 AM »Yeah, I've seen this but never been able to figure out why it's not consistent in reproduction :(
Sometimes it was two names, sometimes three, and then four, as I would add or delete letters from my member name.

Archived fixes / Multiple Same-Name Selection Box When Notifying
« on May 11th, 2013, 01:15 AM »
Sorry for the goofy title, but I couldn't think of a better one. See the attachment. I was going to test the notification system with my own name and got a little box with four of my own names. It might not be a bug but something I don't understand. :)

Other software / Re: My review of customer service on SMF
« on May 10th, 2013, 02:04 PM »All they had to do was explain what they wanted to do in the warning message. Do they even know how to use the warning system? What a weird thought ...
You know... That warning system? Other than to mute Spamtards, I've never, ever, used it!
So ... why did they even put in the warning system if the very people supporting it don't use it!

I thought I'd post up a thread at my forum and see if any gems come out of it as far as suggestions for Wedge. You never know right?
If you could improve the forum experience, what would you ask for as a user?
