Features / Re: Badges and the displaying thereof

Yeah the SMF mod has been abandoned for a long time, really sad with how popular it was. Not to mention how the community has been supporting the thread with tricks to keep it working.

I am glad to see it native in Wedge, it saves me from having to rip it and I'm sure its much cleaner then anything I can write. :)

I'm sure there are many in the Wedge community that would love to see many of the features from Ultimate Profile in Wedge too.

Yep, sure some of us want our shinys and think that ours is more important then everyone else's. From my own programing experiences, I found that you need to do what you want to do first. Always caving to someone else's wants and priorities, only burns you out.

That said when hitting the proverbial brick wall, it's sometimes better to take a break and work on something else. Who knows you might stumble on that thing that had you stumped while working on something else.

Then sometimes you just have to release without certain "non-critical" features, with the intent of adding them in later, no matter how much you want them in at that moment. One, it does give you that break and allows those that were crying for it, to have something, even if its not perfect (feature wise of course). Two, It will appease some but you will always have those that will say its not enough. Well forget them and just do what you think is best. :)

Personally I'm glad you have that to do list based on SMF mods. There are many mods for SMF that I often thought should be part of the core. There are somethings that just preform better when part of the core and when something is so widely used, maybe it is better to have them there, perhaps with the possibility to shut them off for sites that may not want them.

I'm sure you have a lot on your plate and somethings it might be easier to say let someone else do it, except for the fact that I know that you would do a much better job then just about anyone else including the original concept author. When nobody knows the way Wedge works better then you and Nao... As big of a fan I am of Mr. Bracket's work on SMF and YaBB SE, even he doesn't know the variations in this code as good as you guys. So I'm quite certain that just about anything you guys may want to add either as part of the core or as a plugin will be better then anyone else working on it. For that reason alone I would never tell you to "let someone else do it". Beside you'll just end up redoing it later and possibly offending the person that was working on it in between. :)

All too often most people dont get sarcasm, especially in text. I often use a *sarcasm* tag because some people take me seriously. I had a girlfriend about 20 years ago dump me over sarcasm I used in an email. It was a joke, seriously. LOL

Usually when I hear people saying they want users to go to a specific group at registration they mean a group the user can select at registration. For instance say the site was for cell phone users, the user could select from Android, iPhone, Windows, etc. Then each group may have group specific boards as well as the general ones and or a badge.

Technically as it stands the general members group gets tagged as "registered" then uses the post count based groups. In that sense it is functional as is. *shrug*

Features / Re: Improving how smileys are managed
« on December 20th, 2012, 03:33 AM »
While I do see a potential for seasonal smileys on some sites, generally it just seems most sites just add a ton of smileys for their users. Some sites have hundreds to be used and seasonal smileys are just listed as additional smileys rather then a specific set.

I also have the same issues with badges, while some sites like to have theme specific ones, most just use their standard badges set on every theme so as an admin having to copy the badges to every theme is a pain. Most SMF sites I worked on I usually just installed the mods for all badges in one directory and and the one for multiple badges.

Features / Re: Changing topic/post owner

I like the idea, I was posting fixes on SMF for a while for the post as alternate user mod, there was also a similar mod for YaBB.

I was a huge fan of it and often used it to post as generic staff account. The one thing I wanted to do with it and never got around to to was create permission settings so as to allow specific users to post as other specific users. If I remember right, the mod was either on or off or just admin only and offered to much potential for abuse as you could post as any user on the forum. A co-admin on one site would occasionally change or even create "funny" posts as regular users just to be chaotic and then would always mention that he did it.

As you can see there is a huge potential for abuse in the wrong hands but it can be quite useful when allowing others to write FAQs and what not, as a specific account.

Off-topic / Re: Meaning of usernames

From back in the original BBS days, before the internet was made easily accessible to the public, I always used the name Wolf, Wolfman, or some variation there of, on every system I dialed into. In 1993 I saw the HBO original movie Full Eclipse, where the bad guy played by Bruce Payne was named Adam Garou. I really liked the last name and have been using it ever since.

Garou is the shortened form of loup garou, 'loup' is a French word that means wolf and 'garou' is an old Frankish word that means man who turns into animal or as it is translated into werewolf.

Most people think I stole it from either the role playing game Werewolf: The Apocalypse by White Wolf Games or the French singer.

1 - Been using SMF officially since 2003 and Yabb long before that. I worked on the Forms App that was created by Nathaniel for a couple years before getting out of web design.

2 - Eventually, but plan to work on a private server for a while, at least till its a public beta.

3 - Id say I can work on it a couple hours a day.

4 - Feature wise I'm most interested in Post and topics as well as BBC. In my experience those are probably the most used features of any forum.

5 -Sorry I'm a guy but I'm heavy and have boobs so if you really want pics, I'm willing to demean myself.

Thanks for all the hard work guys! We all have been waiting for this for a long time. Glad to see its finally reached this step. Once we get passed beta I plan on using the platform for a few sites that I have been seriously neglecting for a while.

I know I've been gone a while. I got frustrated with web design in general for a while and took some time off. If you guys are willing to permit me to, I'm willing to get back to work and do what I can to help.

Well if everyone wanted the same thing there wouldn't be so many different message board systems out there. We'd all be using the same thing.

Truth is I'm just afraid to see this project fail. I know Nao and Arantor are tough and hardest to break, but I'm been somewhat involved in several SMF projects over the past 5 years and I don't think a single one made it at 100% intented. I'm edger to see what you guys do with it, and just want to make sure you guys have room to breathe.
I think one of the best things that will make this a success is that while Nao and Arantor are keeping the future community in mind for this project, it's first and for most for their own purposes. The have said elsewhere, if no one else ever uses it they'd be fine with that. I think that gives it an edge over most other projects out there.

All to often projects like these get bogged down by community and committees (a big part of whats slowing SMF down at the moment IMHO). This isnt about what does everyone else want, its about what I, err I mean, they (Nao and Arantor) want out of it. Incidentally what they want out of it is what many of us in the SMF community have been looking for, for a long time.

Oh my Star Wars never crossed my mind but someone really needs to come up with a way to incorporate Antilles into the code somewhere. Some sort of Easter Egg or something. It would be hilarious.   :niark:
