Plugins / Re: Mods, support and so on
« on September 6th, 2011, 03:47 AM »
Just spitballing here, but based on the promise of SMF's package manager "portal" (for lack of a better term), what if the wedge add-ons section had the ability to put in repository-like links? Then forum admins could add in both free or paid mod sources, and as long as the wedge forum software had hooks to some gateway-type client piece that mods could put on their hosting sites, the management of subscriptions and such could still be done externally between mod writers and forum admins with the portal piece possibly supporting user/pass logins for retrieval of purchased subscriptions.
(edit: or if you want to get away from user/pass management, maybe each wedge install gets a uniquely generated identifier that the repository client can grant/deny download access)

Oh re-read your original post- you're not taking away the user's ability to hide..just making an indicator show in posts. The user would just display as hidden. Nevermind then.
Namely the feature comes into play with stalking issues or users who tend to hassle other users.

There are certain uses for not showing a user's online status to all other users on the system. The main quirk of SMF's implementation was that even if you checked to not show it, it showed it anyway on the user profile (ultimately corrected by a mod)...but generally in most of the forum softwares I've seen, it's been an available option to the end user.

Seems like the f-word has started to be a little more welcome at the main SMF forums as they have a board dedicated to it now.

The rules have already been "tweaked" a bit...

Features: Forward thinking / Re: MySQL only!

I haven't had a chance to dig into it too much personally yet, but the online export features could be interesting from a backup perspective...

Off-topic / Re: To fork or not to fork - in other words: Hi :)
« on August 10th, 2011, 11:56 PM »Short story: first of all, I'm here because Nao invited me to join.
Long story:
Many, many years ago, I was semi-active in the SMF community and released a theme for SMF 1.0 (yes, one point zero :) ) Later, I became occupied with other open source projects and basically stopped doing stuff for SMF, but my own forum was always running with SMF - many years with 1.0.x and I never bothered upgrading to 1.1, mainly because I had no time and 1.0 was working fine. When 2.0 became apparent, I decided to port the SMF AQUA theme I'd released years before for 1.0 but quickly lost interest after seeing all the bad things happening over at the SMF community. At this time, SMF's future didn't exactly look bright, so I stopped my work on the theme - nobody really wants to invest lots of time into a project threatened by extinction :)
About a year and a half later...
About 2 weeks ago, I started to play around with the 2.0 code base, realizing that it's now BSD licensed and there is no longer the risk of a dying project. Code is out, open sourced and this will never change, so it's safe to use it as a base.
I started with some work on the curve theme which I plan to rewrite completely, aiming for modern browsers (= HTML 5, jQuery, CSS3, IE8 minimum) adding a few Ajax features and a couple of relatively minor features.
Right now, I cannot exactly say which direction it will take. For the first part, it will stay closer to the SMF code base than Wedge, simply because I fear I don't have enough time for major changes in the core. Maybe later...
I plan to concentrate mostly on the end-user experience and adding a few (small) features of which I believe should be part of the core.
For the curios: Forum is here and it always runs on the current code, so it may change and break on a daily base and sometimes it may not even work at all. Since the forum is not very active (most of the old support boards for my other open source project(s) are now read only for quite some time and only there for reference), I can break it whenever I want :)
So yes, this is another project that qualifies as a SMF fork and it was only a couple of days ago, when I became aware of Wedge after Nao joined my site. We quickly figured that neither myself nor him knew about each other's project and I was a bit surprised for how long yours already exists.
I made the mistake of having your Aqua theme on my SMF 1.x forum years ago and having to leave it behind with the 2.x RC upgrades...it's still a running joke on my forum that if I really cared about the users I'd bring the Aqua theme back. So if you could make that happen someday, it would save me some grief.

Call me a traditionalist, but 'mods' has been used in forum software for what seems like forever, so it has the most user-friendly sound to it. Of course, wedge by design isn't meant to be a soft entry into the forum world, so maybe you want to break tradition...

Features / Re: Ditching themes?
« on April 27th, 2011, 08:46 PM »
Personally, I moved away from themes on my board more because of differences between 2.0 revisions than mods. Most themes seem to be dependent on the RC code and the theme authors tend to not revisit them between versions, waiting for "2.0 to go final". Bloc's themes have been the notable exceptions, but even so, the only theme-related gripes I experience these days are from users on mobile devices.
It would be nice to see a more modular approach, specifically consistency with board features tied to permissions. For example, I modified the templates to only render the who's online option if the user has the permission 'who_view'.

Apparently all that is holding up the license (if what is on sm.org is true) is one signature by one guy who's in the middle of a move. Not sure how a move holds up signing a piece of paper and mailing it on, but one would think that could be resolved in a short period of time.
At this point, I feel the mod community over there is in a holding pattern waiting for the imminent 2.0. Not many mods are being updated at this point and discussion has pretty much stalled except for the people who still haven't found the emulate option for installing mods that aren't up to the latest version spec. I'm at the point where I need to upgrade to fix some specific mods, but one pivotal mod (option to replace inline images with links) seemed to magically stop somewhere between RC3 and RC4, so I'm stalled. It's frustrating.

Bringing this slightly back on topic- namely, the mobile experience- I'd like to take this a step further without hopefully ending up in the wedge wishlist area that you guys didn't want this to devolve into...
Looking at the various attempts to make SMF mobile detect friendly, I was actually thinking what about taking that to the next level supporting locations in a forum software package? There are things users may want/not want enabled when logged in from a mobile device/work computer/home computer. What would be the logic behind tying user preferences to the user's source IP address, which could be assigned a location tag? Therefore if a user wants to have in-line images disabled at work or an arcade link active from home, they could be set within those profile locations.
Too complex? More trouble than its worth?

« on March 29th, 2011, 11:09 PM »Netscape's inability to compete was evident from the moment it arrived being a paid package, when IE was free and bundled.
I saw the last couple of major versions of Netscape before it failed entirely and it was getting more and more sluggish as time went on - it was slower then (relatively) than FF is now, and FF is sluggish these days.

Long time lurker, first time poster...
Looking forward to Wedge- started running phpbb, moved to SMF when it was "born", and have been trudging through it ever since. What sells wedge the most for me is the plug-in architecture. From RC to RC w/ SMF, I've basically had to drop themes and mods either from difficulty re-customizing after each upgrade or from authors finally going with the 'I'm waiting until 2.0 final' approach. I have a relatively small, private forum community, but what has been added to SMF is generally there for a reason.
Sadly, I'm not much of a coder, so I'm more of an intrigued follower and cultist in the making...but I'm interested in kicking the tires as soon as ones are available...
