Other software / Re: Fork discussion at SMF
« on August 16th, 2011, 08:58 PM »
Those devs thought the BSD license was a better idea than the "old SMF" license, for a number of reasons. They were the "they" who made that change happen. They were SMF team members and former SMF team members.

The BSD license is the single standard license at simplemachines.org. The old license is only attached to deprecated versions of SMF.

Change is difficult, but it happens.

if we go BSD, or Creative Commons as I've mused about recently
What a marvelous idea!

On behalf of the SMF team, I cordially invite Nao and Arantor and Wedge team to give notice that the Wedge project will go with a BSD[1] or similar license. And then make a showcase post on the fork discussion board.

Of course, some tempers will flare. They always do. That's why I've been trying to recruit a good neutral moderator for that board, to keep things as friendly as possible.

As an aside -- my apologies for my typo in the first post to the Fork Discussion board at simplemachines.org.  I have fixed it.  You can tell me these things, of course.  I am not a "they".
 1. We know that the SMF team went with the BSD license precisely because "they" thought that the "old SMF license" was not as open as it should have been. It was adopted in 2006, because the GPL license did not seem to be providing enough protection to YaBB SE (I am recently learning SMF history).  But it is history now, only attached to deprecated versions of SMF, and to YaBB SE 1.5.1.

I think the ex-devs were right to insist on the change to BSD. At this point in time, I think it will be a positive change for the SMF community and SMF. SMF's old license was chosen at the moment YaBB SE was becoming SMF, because of the team's concern over a real case of someone taking YaBB SE code, repackaging it without attribution, and including it in a for-pay package. It seemed like the best choice to the team at the time.

I know the move to an open SVN has been slower than the SMF dev team, SMF afficionados, or any open-source advocate, would like to see. That's a valid criticism. There is some cultural change required. It's one thing to be in favor of a BSD license.  It's another to be used to working in a more open environment.  And the SMF team is reluctant to store project stuff on "somebody else's server" because of issues from the YaBB SE days.

Change comes slowly.

Since we often have the same spelling and pronunciation of words for different parts of speech (more can be used as an adjective, an adverb, or (rarely) as a noun), we don't much care about the difference between adjectives and adverbs.
So it is common to see "She spoke quickly, but he spoke quicker than she did", even though it is grammatically incorrect.

I'd like to see everybody get along, of course. But I know I'm not going to get everybody to see eye-to-eye, much as I'd like to.

Yes, of course, I agree that it is courtesy to communicate. "Hey, I love this bit, and want to use it". Whether the two devs are currently feeling "friendly" or not.  Courtesy. Civility.

I assume, of course, that anyone who has put a BSD license on the code has already explicitly expressed their perfect willingness to allow anyone at all to lift a function or class wholesale, as long as they follow the letter (and spirit?) of the license agreement. That's what the open source license is for.

I'm pretty new at SMF.  So I may be making some poor assumptions. I assume "everybody" knew the BSD license meant forking was inevitable, and healthy, and that SMF itself will benefit from what the the fork teams learn, and even from reading/using bits of open source code.

If you find good, reusable stuff in NightWish's fork, you'll be appropriating it, right?

I mean, that's the point of open source, right? That's the reason SMF went to the BSD license -- to encourage forks, friendly competition, building on others' work, and outright appropriating code from one another.  If it fits.  With appropriate attribution, in the spirit and letter of the license.

PS. Yes, show the world what SMF should be like. If it's good, it will inspire NightWish, the SMF team, and any other budding fork-writer.

I'm not a dev, Jim, I'm a doc writer.
I'm just saying...

Hello Nightwish!

Your fork looks promissing.  It is great to see the work you are doing. Every good idea is a benefit to the entire SMF community.  I'm glad you've made your work open source, too. You can be sure that other devs will be looking to use and build on your good ideas.

Doh! I was thinking "converter", = "operations on the database".

Nevermind.

I'm going to assume that ARG did actually have this experience of being logged out for no apparant reason.

The cause for it may be completely different, of course. There is a lot going on at the site. It is not perfect. But nobody at SimpleMachines.org is staying up 24/7 to watch him log in, then mucking around in the database to log him out 2 minutes later.

ARG,

I'm glad to hear your username/password are OK.

I've had that "logged out" experience before, myself -- usually during spammer floods. It is really annoying.
I don't think that the cause for has anything to do with you directly.

Are you still having the problem? If so, you could try emailing the times at which this occurs to info@simplemachines.org. I know the site and server team are always working hard to let members in while keeping the bad bots out, but things don't always work perfectly.

Of course, the SMF team is not perfect. Nor are the SMF servers. Or the SMF site. Or the SMF software. The team does try awfully hard, though.

Then they modified log account information to show I was loged in while I was in hospital.
Road Rash,

That seems extremely odd. Not very many people at simplemachines.org would be able to do that.
And I don't think it would benefit anyone to mess with that information -- wouldn't really be worth their while.

Is it possible that somebody else got hold of an old cookie on a shared PC while you were in hospital?
Or had one of your friends guessed your password and had a little harmless fun with your avatar? I'm just making a wild guess.

I know that SMF team members are not perfect, but as far as I know, they are not falsely accusing people of changing their avatars, and they are not creating fraudulent log-in entries. I would be extremely surprised to learn that was going on around me.

That's what I think.

I miss Nao and Arantor at simplemachines.org, too.

I tend to choose self-descript names that can be grasped by noobs, even if it lies about the (bigger) scope of the feature.
Yes, there is a lot to be said for clearly understanding what you are talking about and explaining it simply. +1 on both.

I don't know that "floating topics" has another name.

When I brought the idea up, at Jaelta, it didn't gain much traction.

But, then, I wasn't very clear on what I was talking about, either, was I?
